If we can start limiting the one way traffic, I’ll have some trust again too, which would be nice to head to the footy with.
Yeh I still think there are big cracks which the best teams will expose (Collingwood will LOVE the way we concede scores from our attacking 50), but fantastic to bank two wins against teams that could be in the 5-10 range. Saints and Melbourne have been two of the best teams of the opening month.

We just need to hope our current plan is enough to keep banking wins, and when we come up against those top 4 sides we have an adjustment to keep us in the game.

Our best is good enough our worst is bottom 4 level. That gap desperately needs to be bridged. We're not going to be at our best every minute of every game, even the best have lapses it's just what we do and don't do in those lapses that needs to be mended. Conceding 8 straight goals is pathetic, absolutely pathetic. It should not happen and cannot continue to happen going forward. Why it's still an issue concerns me.

        Good to get a win.

Plenty of strong contributors and great individual efforts at various times.

English was brilliant, midfield of Bont, Libba and Treloar is a strong combination and they’re working well together.

Richards had his best game of the year.

Bruce is becoming a legit defender, did some good things I thought and picked his moments well.

Naughton, Lobb and Marra had their moments.

Daniel, Dale, JJ provided some great run and kicking.

        Onto the next.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Well even though we stuffed up in the second, we fought back and won a tough contest.

Keeping the Tigers to two goals in the second half (none in 3rd qrt) was pretty good and wipes all the negativity - because we WON

It was certainly a good win. Got the four points. Got the season back on track.

But a 2 point win after an 8 goal fade against a top?middle?bottom ?.. team needs a carefully focused review and some changes.

Looking forward to seeing what they are.

( I thought Richmond was better organised but we had far superior players.)

I agree. We dominated the middle of the ground and generally most of the contest. Their spread and overlap run was awesome and we looked exposed every turnover.

I am so tired of watching us make every goal hard work.

Our trouble is we lack leg speed when teams get a run on we can't chase them down and when your zoning off your opponent it valuable meters we have trouble making up.
This goes a lot for our midfield who as skillful they are if the opposite number gets first run at it we can't catch them up.
That's why we need to draft some skill plus speed into the centre.

Eliminate or at least slow down those bad patches and we can likely mix it with anyone.

That was a shocking miss by the umpire and could have cost us the game.

Naughton and Marra need to work their shit out.

They're both leaping for the same ball too often.

... this is the first time in ages that we have been able to recover instead of folding into a shell shocked mess. Whether that was coaching adjustments, or (I somehow felt it was this) the players finally drawing a line in the end, I don’t think this win can be underestimated. We were without rotations with Keath and Crozier off and the conditions were very very taxing.

Their spread and overlap run was awesome and we looked exposed every turnover.

The above observations constitute the beginning points for initial analysis. I’d discount the coach’s post game comments as with greatest respect they appeared designed for a less analytical audience.

Going into the half time break I wondered if the second half would be another, “Here we go again” moment ala Melbourne in the GF, Dockers in last year’s finals and other times we’ve appeared dominant to quickly capitulate.

In the latter part of the second quarter their spread and overlap had us chasing tail, we didn’t roll over, although we were short on rotations and more importantly we realised where the problem lay and adjusted.

After the break to prevent turn overs becoming threats we moved a player onto the one they dropped back to chop off our attacks, and moved out of zones into a 1 on 1 strategy thereby turning every possible ball movement into a contest. This took a lot of the dynamism out of our game but it let quality prevail.

I have not yet had a chance to review the second half to confirm these thoughts. I’d invite you to review the second half especially player positioning, to see if my analysis bears some consideration.

I am not much into analysing the whys, therefores and wherefors but, for anyone who is, it seems to me that the critical points to consider when a team gets a run on are to: 1)examine how many of the goals result from our mistakes (misdirected tap, push on, handball, kick, fumble, failed tackle, dropped mark, failure to shepard & etc) 2) how many result from a failure to set up well at stoppages. I'm not just talking about on ballers here but every player, particularly those who are stationed between the ball and the opposition's goal. For me, there is only one position to adopt if you are a defender - STS. And finally 3) if any of the goals resulted from poor umpiring decisions..1 and 2 we can address. 3 is OOOC
