Stringer shows bark in VFL to put up hand for finals

DUMPED Western Bulldogs forward Jake Stringer collected 22 disposals and kicked a goal for Footscray on Saturday afternoon in his bid to return to the senior team for its upcoming finals campaign.

The 2015 All Australian split his time between the forward line and midfield.

He showed his trademark aggression and ability to break away from the contest on multiple occasions, although he conceded a free kick in the last quarter after trying to bust through one too many tackles.

Stringer was often able to set his teammates up for scoring chances, even if they were unable to capitalise.

The match started poorly for Stringer, with his man kicking the first goal of the game at a stoppage just outside the Magpies' goalsquare. He would respond later in the term with a crumb and snap for the Dogs' first goal. It was his only goal of the match.

His performance was crucial in ending Collingwood's run of 12 consecutive wins, with the Bulldogs victorious at Whitten Oval, 16.9 (105) to 10.13 (73).

In Footscray's match last Sunday, Stringer had 21 disposals and a goal.

Stringer slotted four goals from his last four games at senior level.

The Western Bulldogs travel to Western Australia to face Fremantle on Sunday. While they are almost certainly out of the running for a spot in the top four, they could conceivably finish fifth if Hawthorn lose to Collingwood

Was the Whitten stand buzzing? From hearing the reports in the qualifying final against Williamstown in the 2014 season it certainly was.

Re: Round 21 Footscray Bulldogs v Collingwood.

I attended the game today and when TC went down we looked to be in big trouble.

Obviously a concussion issue as he was down for a while before walking off with blood coming from his scalp.

Stringer, I felt was underwhelming and while he did contribute he stood back as a spectator far too often.

Bailey Dale was fantastic, particularly in the 3rd when we kicked against the breeze but still outscored Collingwood by a point.

Declan Hamilton show that the faith from his resigning may not be misplaced with an excellent performance.

Roarke Smith was very good and even managed to compete very well in the air when variously opposed to the talls of Witts, Cox and Gault, despite conceding 20 to 25 cms of height.

Lynch showed quote a bit and does have some good skills. He does need to build strength to compete in the clinches.

McLean and Honeychurch were both a little disappointing, while Adcock was solid and showed the value of his experience.

Of the VFL players, Hannan really looks to have something. Has good hands and chooses good options as well as getting to the right spots. Would be very happy to see us draft him.

Long also has some skills and must be a chance to be picked up by an AFL club.

It was a very good win, that looked really unlikely in the first 15 minutes of the game.

I got there today and ended up being asked to go in some tv show by Shane della? So that was a nice surprise fiimed in my SOTW hoodie cheering them on making comments. Had to sign papers etc .. Pretty cool stuff I must say ..
Thought stringer was good today , you can see he is to good for this grade .. Hannan is a star and Long was quite amazing, in one play he tackled 3 players .. Stringer did the same and both got rewarded for their efforts.
Rourke just has this great leap he is so much of the Easton Wood model.
Campbell very unlucky and Staley did a huge job taking over kudos to him.
Dale was in a lot today and I think another preseason will see him really take over.
Jordan Russell how the hell he didn't play more AFL is beyond me. He just controls the whole team.

Gotta say, I love this Footscray team including all the VFL blokes. Massive effort by all involved, given all the injuries it's Footscray who has suffered the most, having to utilise our third and forth stringers (no pun intended) effectively and somehow getting it done.

That both our AFL and VFL teams share the never say die trait is very encouraging.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

Re: Round 21 Footscray Bulldogs v Collingwood.

Wow, what a game to win!

After TC went down in the first 5 mins and they had 4 goals on the board by the 15 minute mark, I was sure it was going to be a one-sided affair and that we were in for a thrashing, but as the first quarter ended we started to gain a bit more control around the ball and took off from there.

This game epitomised the 'even team performance' saying, with both AFL and VFL players contributing equally across all parts of the ground.

How we got away with having to ruck Staley and Austin against Mason Cox and Jarrod Witts and win the game quite easily in the end, is testament to the determination and tackling pressure of Footscray's on-ball brigade.

I thought Stringer played a more rounded game today versus the effort I seen him display the previous week. He was cleaner when he got the ball and disposed of it a bit better. He wasn't the best Bulldogs player, but he wasn't the worst either.

Someone has mentioned earlier that HC was a bit down today - certainly his possession count was down, but his effort was generally as hard as any of his fellow midfielders.

I thought Adcock put in one of his better performances - he has a much bigger body than the regular VFL boys and used it more so today.

Hamilton did some really nice things today - particularly his goal in the third quarter - he really thought about the kick as he put thru a sharp, low trajectory kick into the wind. He certainly enjoyed it, as did his fellow forwards.

Dale had a great game - should have got 4 -5 goals. His marking overhead was particularly clean on a day where the breeze tended to have an influence on the players marking skills after quarter time.

Roarke played well across the half back and continually took off down the ground after taking a mark - it was great to watch.

Lynch and Mclean had serviceable games.

Of the VFL players, Hannan again was electrifying at times - as a spectator you genuinely get excited when the balls goes into the forward line and he is there and in a position to take a big grab. He is a beautiful kick and an accurate kick (not just today but thru the season).

Jamieson had a return to his 2014/15 form which was good to see and Staley, who has played as a tall all year both forward and more recently back, was quite heroic in the ruck.

Jordan Russell and Anthony Barry controlled the backline while T-B, Greenwood, Wallis and Nash were great on ballers.

Also special mention to Dalgleish and his left foot kicking off the half back line and to the 23rd man, Benjamin Long who is very classy with the ball in hand.

All in all a very satisfying day beating a Collingwood side sitting atop the VFL ladder.

One thing evident in this year's Footscray team, is the same grit and determination to stay in each game as per the AFL side.

A great winning culture is developing at our football club.
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.

Footscray snaps Collingwood's 12-game winning streak

Footscray completed their home and away season in emphatic fashion, ending top-of-the-table Collingwood’s 12-game winning streak, with a 32-point victory at Victoria University Whitten Oval.

The win was set-up with a six goals to one second quarter, turning a 21-point quarter time deficit into an eight point advantage at the main break.

In blustery conditions at VU Whitten Oval, the Bulldogs capitalized on their time kicking with the wind, slotting 12 majors compared to Collingwood’s seven when they were kicking to the favoured Geelong Road end.

With the Dogs and Magpies managing four and three goals respectively against the wind, it was the time spent kicking with the wind that ultimately determined the result.

“For our boys to rally after a slow start and identify and correct behaviours that were hurting us in the first quarter, was a real credit to the team and the spirit of the group,” coach Ashley Hansen told westernbulldogs.com.au post match.

“Denying the supply to their forward half was a big focus and [also] us being really strong in the contest.

“I didn’t think we were great early but we certainly built on that and today was such good preparation for what’s going to come up in the next month, because finals football is about critical contests.”

The final term saw a flurry of Dogs goals to extend the lead, including two to Bailey Dale who was named best on ground.

Dale finished with three goals for the game and 20 disposals.

Senior listed Bulldogs Jed Adcock and Jake Stringer were also named among Footscray’s best, along with Mitch Hannan, Nick Jamieson and Jordan Staley.

Stringer kicked the Dogs’ first goal of the match and finished with 22 disposals for the game, sharing his time between the midfield and forward of the ball.

Footscray currently sit in fourth place on the VFL ladder, and will be looking for a Geelong win over Port Melbourne tomorrow to ensure they retain the double chance in September.

With the ‘Scray’s depth tested throughout the season, coach Hansen was pleased with the momentum his side had built heading into September.

“Their ability, individually and collectively, to play their role for the side when called upon has really pleased me this season.

“We’ve certainly given everyone on our list an opportunity to play at one point and they’ve all contributed to where we’ve finished.

“You certainly don’t go through a home and away season without calling on everyone and we had to do that this year through the health of our list and the guys have delivered.

“The squad as a whole should be really proud of their efforts to put us in a position where we’re either finishing fourth or fifth so I’m really pleased with that.”

Tom Campbell was the only concern for the Bulldogs coming out of the match, leaving the field early in the first quarter after a knock to the head, and not returning for the remainder of the game

Details of Footscray’s VFL finals schedule will be posted at westernbulldogs.com.au/vfl following the conclusion of home and away season matches on Sunday.
