      Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts

Matt Balmer from AFL Draft Central has updated his Phantom Draft post trade week.

Interesting just to see differing views on where Cerra might land.

Pick 9: Western Bulldogs – Adam Cerra
      Balanced Midfielder (Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro)
      07/10/1999 | 186.3cm | 80.3kg

Scouting notes: The forgotten man of the 2017 draft pool after missing 2016 with a meniscus injury to his knee. The AFL Academy missed out on pick one and pick two in 2016 – and Cerra could be another to join that list of high draft picks. He wins the ball on the inside and possesses a clean kick on his right foot. He contested work and clearance winning are superb and he covers the ground well. Was one of the standouts in the Vic Metro trials in April and continued his form in the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships.

In the mix: If the Saints don’t take Bonar, he’s a player I’d expect the Bulldogs to snap up. With Stringer leaving the kennel, South Australia’s best draft prospect Darcy Fogarty could fill a similar role as a forward. They have also shown some interest in Nathan Murphy – but they may hope that he gets to their next selection.

Pick 16: Western Bulldogs – Ed Richards
      Medium Defender/
Inside Midfielder (Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro)
      03/07/1999 | 184.7cm | 78.1kg

Scouting notes: Speedy running defender who dominated in the APS school football competition for Carey. Is trusted with taking the kick outs and is a clean and effective kick on his left foot. Can play as an inside midfielder, where he uses his quick & clean hands to effectiveness.

In the mix: The Tigers will be hoping that father-son prospect Patrick Naish doesn’t get a bid here – with the Bulldogs showing plenty of interest this season. If they’re looking to add some speed on the outside, Ed Richards has had a great season and might be one they look to recruit. Norwood small midfielder Zac Bailey was superb throughout the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships for the Allies and could be another they consider.

I've read that he's very good mates with Pat Lipinski. I was also curious to know whether he might be related to Stuart Coffield, a WB Life Member of Geelong Travel fame.

We don't necessarily need more running half backs (although if he's better than what we've got it's still worth it) - the article says he could also play as an inside mid but I'd hope someone with those traits was out on a wing for us.

              Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts

I'm not surprised to hear about our interest in Richards although it would be fair to say with 2 first round picks we would be interested in quite a few.

With picks 9 & 16 we have a very good hand and there will be excellent players available at both picks. Can't wait to see who we go for. In the List Management thread I suggested we needed goalkicking forwards. not the midfield hybrid type but the natural goal kicker type with a bit of X factor. Some pace would be nice too! Ok I know I ask for too much!!

Stephenson would be perfect but he is sure to be gone. Others like Davies, Dow, Rayner, Cerra & Coffield likely to be gone as well so who could or should we go with at pick 9? If all these guys are gone the players i like are

Balta - he's not exactly what I described above but could arguably be the best prospect available. Multi position player. Quick, can run and carry, can kick goals

Higgins - nice goal kicking small half forward. Can deliver the ball with precision.

Bonar - Stocks are rising for the big bodied half forward/midfielder after his excellent return form long term injuries

              at pick 16

any of the above and possibly

Richards - nice kicking half back with a bit of dash

Allen - mid sized forward from WA who won the Larke medal for best player at the Champs

Kelly - mature age midfielder from WAFL who can kick goals. His style of play of bursting away would be perfect for us if he could transition it to afl level. I would be keen to hear MJP's thoughts on this. Looks a gun to me.

Spargo - I think this guy could be a gem and we have let go a few of our midgets. Very creative inside 50 player who hits the scoreboard. Could rotate with Daniel in midfield!

Houlahan - will appeal as a high marking half forward. Nice kick for goal too.

                Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts

Doctor are you concerned with Higgins potential lack of upside considering he spent the training full time and preparing like an AFL player as he left in year 11 at the end of 2016?

I’m still a fan of Charlie Constable, big chance he can slip to 16.

Stephenson would be perfect but not doubt the saints take him. I think we all know what needs our team has so it's great to hear from draft watchers who the likely prospects are. Would like us picking local boys though. WA kids and the go home factor is a turn off

                    Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts

I think the draft will go along the lines of Rayner, Davies-Uniacke, Stephenson, Dow, and Naughton in the first 5 picks because it seems there is a fair bit of speculation that Fremantle will take the local boy in Naughton with their 2nd pick.

From 6 to 10 gives us some interesting prospects in Cerra, Brayshaw, D.Fogarty, Balta, Bonar, Constable and Coffield. I suspect Collingwood at 6 will like Coffield and at 7 and 8 I could see the Saints being interested in 2 of the Sandringhman Dragon boys Brayshaw, Bonar or Constable.

At pick 9 with a number of the better fancied players gone we could be looking at Darcy Fogarty as a ready made Stringer replacement, Constable who is a bit like Dunkley but has better skills, Brander or Balta as a versatile tall's or even putting a bid in on Patrick Naish. Of course if any of the payers listed above in the 1 to 8 ratings slide they would come into consideration.

For pick 16 I think Doc has covered a lot of the better names. Perhaps a bolter in Murphy comes into consideration but also Clark or even O'Brien. I quite like L.Fogarty as well but pick 16 might be a bit early for him.

I tend to agree the Saints should be all over him if he is still available, Brayshaw for that matter as well. They needs mids that can run and use the ball well.

Seems a few trusted opinions have Fogarty sliding to 10. Would we pass on him at 9?

I'm not sold on him. I think it's a somewhat risky selection but with potential upside. I think I would pass on him but that is largely based on not seeing enough of him.

Back to the biggest question in the world. Not God, but do we go best available. Or with our talls now, and mids throughout 9-16, do we draft the best mids available?

With 8 selections before our pick 16 held by interstate teams, and the strong go-home fear that exists, we might find more local Vic lads slipping through.
