I love the romance of the father son pick but I also feel it is a massive noose tied around us.

What is the likelihood we will have to use our top 5 pick? Surely not?
I can't see the scenario where we have to use pick 5 to land West and if another club did rate him that highly then we should probably let them take him.

I don't see it as a noose, with just a bit of work we should be able to land two first round quality players.

If we can land two first round midfielders, a tallish rebounding defender in Khamis (NGA) and then perhaps Chatfield (NGA) as a high pressure forward and Dawson (NGA) as a later midfielder. I'd be very happy about bringing in the sorts of players to compliment our recent drqfted talls (English, Naughton, Schache, Collins ect), especially with effectively two first rounders. So I think we just move some players on for the points this year and play the longer game with young top end talent.

It's a noose. There should be a substantial discount for F/S. The stupid AFL will piss all the goodwill and great stories the F/S system provides up against the wall if we let them. They are clueless about the benefits the F/S system provides to the competition.

If they tighten F/S or find some other way to ruin then they can take their competition and they can stick it up there arse sideways. I bet I'm not the only one who thinks that either.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

We should be trading for the points.

So we in effect get two first rounders this year, so it's good news if we can work out a good strategy for how we cover the draft points needed (we have about 700 points currently), and points for Khamis.
ESPN have him at 16 now. We need to be ruthless but not reckless with how we position ourselves.

That's still not a bad range for mine. If we are prepared to let a couple of free agents go then the points issue will become a non issue. If Dahl left for pick 24 (2nd compo) then that make life a lot easier, if Wallis is going as Stevo has suggested then as I say, points is a non issue. A couple of big if's though.

Having said that if we are interested in Khamis, Chatfield & Dawson, then the points may come back into it. 4 kids with first dibs on is a little different. On the question of Chatfield & Dawson, have you seen either kid live?

What about the 2019 draft? Kellet, Libba #2 - all are apparently in the top 25.

They should dismantle the father son process if there needs to be a significant discount to the market value of the player on top of what we already get just to get a player to the club of his choice. 20% is a good deal. To be honest it's just a bit of romantic nonsense to start with let alone if we should be giving clubs a further discount.

We overpaid for Ayce Cordy but landed most other players within reason if not at a discount to their true value so I think it works pretty well as is. The same process also allowed us to get Dunkley from the the grasp of the Swans so it does work both ways.

There is no need to change it just because this year or next might be a bit difficult.

As it stands, the father son club have to pay 20% less than the market (other bidding clubs) decides a player is worth. To me that seems fair enough.

And 2020, young MacPherson, whose the current u/16 Vic Mtero captain, if he continues to impress might be another high draft points prospect again (plus more Wests, a Darcy, a Dimmatina etc). Which is why we shouldn't be going into future draft point deficits in my book. Let free agents go, and/or trade players this year would be my advice to the club so we can approach each draft without complication.

BULLDOGS SON OF A GUN “KEEN” ON JOINING THE KENNEL

Western Bulldogs champion Scott West has indicated that his son Rhylee would like to be drafted by the Bulldogs, but the ball is firmly in the club’s court.

West impressed in his first outing for Vic Metro in the U18 Championships against Western Australia, collecting 25 disposals, extracting nine clearances and booting a goal in an eye-catching performance.

The father-son prospect would prefer to join the Dogs due to his emotional attachment to the club and having already built up a rapport with the senior group having partaking in the club’s preseason camp

“I think it becomes a Bulldogs commitment to him – I think he’s pretty keen,” West told SEN Breakfast.
“At the end of the day, I will say he wants to get drafted, he wants to be an AFL footballer.

“He has a huge romance with the Bulldogs, not just for the fact that I played for them, but he grew up running in and out of the rooms onto the ground, he knows a lot of the ex-players who played there.

“And obviously he’s has that experience over the preseason when he was there for five weeks with the players.
“I think we would like to go to the Dogs. I think he’s ties there, he really loves the club and he loves that environment.

“But as I said, that’s not taking away from the fact that he just wants to get drafted. It’s up to the Bulldogs to nominate him.

“If the Bulldogs don’t commit to him, I dare say he has to go into the draft.”
