Watched the Vic M v Vic C match. West and Khamis both impressed. West's hands in close are exceptional and liked Khamis composed footskills. Of potential pick 5 prospects, really liked Bailey Smith who was good through the middle and kicked 3 goals - has a lot of good attributes we need.

        Re: 2018 Draft Watch

This is Cal Towmey's full first round draft

        Callum Twomey’s Mock Draft

        1) Jack Lukosius (Carlton)

“He’s starred so far for the South Australian side at the Under 18 Championships, he’s a key forward who just marks it beautifully in the air,” Twomey said.

“He’s one of the great kicks I’ve seen come through the draft and has a presence about him.”

        2) Sam Walsh (Brisbane)

“Sam Walsh at the Lions would be a great fit. He’s a Lions supporter and a midfielder who just finds the footy,” Twomey said.

“He’s probably more of an outside midfielder at the moment.”

        3) Max King (St Kilda)

“Then there’s Max King at pick three, he grabs it well for a key position player,” he said.

He is currently recovering from a torn ACL.

        4) Ben King (Gold Coast)

“The twin brother of Max, a key defender,” he said.

        5) Tarryn Thomas (North Melbourne) (academy)

“This is taking into account where the bids might come. Tarryn’s a star and come through the academy at North and looks like being a really top prospect,” he said.

        6) Izak Rankine (Western Bulldogs)

“He’s got the star factor about him, been really good at the championships so far,” he said.

        7) Bailey Smith (Essendon)

“He’s a gun midfielder, that’s what the Bombers need, he can come in and play straight away,” he said.

“Smith’s been basically the in-form player of the championships so far.”

        8) Nick Blakey (Sydney) (academy)

“Matching a bid from the Dockers for the father-son academy prospect,” he said.

        9) Bailey Williams (Fremantle)

“The Dockers need a tall forward, Williams can play in the ruck too,” he said.

        10) Connor Rozee (Adelaide)

“A local boy for the Crows with a tonne of talent,” he said.

The rest of the first round:

        11) Jackson Hately (GWS)
        12) Ian Hill (Hawthorn)
        13) Isaac Quaynor (Collingwood)
        14) Jye Caldwell (Port Adelaide)
        15) Riley Collier-Dawkins (Geelong)
        16) Curtis Taylor (Adelaide)
        17) Chayce Jones (Gold Coast)
        18) Tom McKenzie (Richmond)

Just looked at Rankines highlight package, seems to turn the ball over and take the tackler on a fair bit.
Will fit in nicely with us.

Which is a little strange as Twomey has West in his starting 18 in the under 18's Team of the Year??

So he's top 18 for the above team, but not top 18 for his phantom draft.

Haven't scrutinised but who is in the top 20 and not the team ?
If it's a couple of talls and forwards he might have had to overlook them in his side for team balance, pushing West just out and into the second round.

I can't recall off the top of my head. But Khamis is another starting 18 who didn't make the first round either. I don't mind either sliding at all though.

Yes not a big fan (but have only watched him twice), would much prefer Tarryn Thomas or Bailey Smith at our first pick.

Just a guess but wouldn't the team of the Year in this case be more current form orientated and draft rankings more about what they could grow into?

Ie. Hooper was mvp i think in his year but with little scope for improvement, while someone like Dangerfield wasn't as credentialled but could be anything
I should leave it alone but you're not right

I don't know what Twomey is thinking. Only Twomey can answer that, I guess. Is he a Twitter goer?

                            Shhh.

Debate Worm doesn't do routine tweets. Whomever the Debate Worm is broke the Tom Boyd trade, including details, days before it was even a thing... The DW even called it out a year earlier to trade radio. Now the DW is sitting there ready to break the next big trade before the club knows about it, if I'm guessing who the DW is and what he or she is up to. Folks just have to work the trade out before the DW upends trade week again! Viva la Debate Worm! (It's not me though, I'm a mild mannered forum goer)

                                Re: 2018 Draft Watch

I saw the metro vs Vic Country game and I'll admit I was a little disappointed that RCD played forward the whole time I was watching but he moves well. 193cm, same height as Chris Grant, would be interesting if he 'does a Bont' and goes back to the Knights with renewed confidence and dominates in multiple positions in his last few games.

Very impressed with Curtis Taylor, love the way he moves. Would project as a medium forward at AFL level (perhaps playing taller than his height, Gray/Wingard style) but he showed real glimpses. Thinking more ceiling than full performance, but he clearly has that class and goal-sense that we lack on our list.

West for mine played a lot like Mitch Wallis if Mitch Wallis had the best handball ability in the competition. There were at least three occasions where you'd expect Rhylee would have been holding the ball but he somehow managed a handball release to a teammate. Not sure he really projects as anything other than a contested mid at AFL level (didn't look as adept forward as some u18 watchers have stated previously) but one thing that really stood out is that he doesn't "cheat" like top u18 prospects often do by standing attacking side of the contest. He stood defensive side more often than not and showed a desire to do the unflashy, team-focused things.
Watching him closely he's less 'star' and more 'useful, good to play with teammate' which in a way is better.

Bukes needs a lot of development but doesn't seem to panic when he has the ball which sets him apart from the fringe players on our list. He's further behind than I expected but has more ceiling than I expected.

Answorth was one kid I was impressed with that I haven't heard much discussion of. Sam Walsh touted as a lock for the no 2 pick to Brisbane (JK goes to Carlton) looked like he'd be a certain no 1 pick any other draft year, footballer more than an athlete but looks like he can do it all.

McHenry was another from Country that really impressed me. Haven't heard McHenry or Answorth's names touted anywhere near the first round so it looks like there could be some decent players who slip if by some miracle we have picks after pick 5 that aren't used for FS/Academy points.
