    Re: 2019 Draft Watch

I thought the Suns did well having last years draftees there to welcome the new draftees this year.

It was a nice touch and I think it sends a positive message for their new players

They would have used a senior player but found they didn’t have any.

          Was a nice PR move.

But what was the alternative? Ablett, Lynch-Prestia-Caddy (premiers), May, Kolo, Matera, Ah Chee & Jack Martin we’re busy elsewhere.

            So we have picks 52 & 71.

Assuming macguiness & Mead go not too far down. Looking at their draft hands, that leaves us with picks 52 & 68.

            As I see it:

            A) Use 52 & 68 - good mid range picks. Safe bet to happen.

            B) Pick trade - if we are really desperate for a player we don’t think will make it all the way to Pick 52 - Say Picks 52 & 68 - for - 47 & 77 (West Coast). Then look at a late pick we feel comfortable will be there after the downgrade.

              Re: 2019 Draft Watch

MJP I've been enjoying your observations, and was hoping to get your review of the first round. Do you really think we'll regret taking Weightman over Worrell and Robertson? And what would explain both of them sliding as far as they have? AND is it possible they KEEP sliding to our next pick??????

The draft hasn't happened yet but the Twomey mock is usually on the money so I am already getting agitated. My issue is that they just want to be 'smarter' than the person next to them. To me, this years draft looks pretty straight forward and yet none of the 'mocks' are making it seem that way. There is ONE wildcard - Kemp. He is coming off an ACL and there are two recent precedents for this:

              - Stringer (broken leg, top 10).
              - Burton (broken leg, end of first round).

Both seem to have had pretty much 'solid' careers anyway and whilst I agree the whole 'increased chance of acl re-occurance numbers would give me pause, given Stringer and Burton I would take him anyway.

Things that are amazing to me right now:

1/. Why would Melbourne not bid on Greene and make GWS at least SWEAT.
2/. Why would Sydney or Adelaide NOT bid on Henry and make Freo pay the price.

There are zero guarantees in the draft and both of these guys are as likely to be 'top 10' picks in the long term as whoever the alternatives are.

              What else?

Apparently Melbourne believe Jackson is a generational player and therefore they will pick him and play him as a forward. This is STUPID. He is a ruckman. The last ruckman picked this high was Nic Nat who has zero premierships, zero B+F wins and whilst he is really entertaining (and even dominant at times), he is the Joel Embid of the AFL and simply doesn't play well enough, often enough to be worth it. They SHOULD (given GC's plan) take either Robertson (the best player) or the best fit for their club - an outside runner (ASH).

Speaking of Gold Coast, whilst I wouldn't do what they are doing - I would take Jackson and Robertson - at least they have a plan that everyone in the club is on board with.

              Other mock draft fails:
              - Freo. Taking two Victorian kids at 7+8 with a full-house of local kids? Adam Cera and Brayshaw over Naughton? How's that working out for you???

              - Adelaide. Taking McAsey over Stephens? Why - when everyone leaves your club - would you do that? Have you learned nothing? Take Stephens. He is going to be good. McAsey *MIGHT* be amazing...but then again, so was Lever...he plays for Melbourne now.

              - Pickett at pick 11? This SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. I know we have all talked ourselves into the highlight reel by now, but pick 11?

              - Bergman, Weightman and De Koning over Worrell? Again, this SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

That's not a knock on Weightman, Pickett or Bergman but I don't know how we could pass on Robertson

                      Re: 2019 Draft Watch

Weightman is an interesting selection by us.

I certainly wouldn’t rate him as an elite finisher as some of the commentators have. He is however able to put himself in positions to score or create scores an awful lot. His kicking in general is pretty good especially short and out of congestion. People expecting a dead eye goal kicker won’t be getting that at this stage but he isn’t a poor finisher either.

Most of his scores come from well timed crumbs (exceptional below his knees) or clever positioning in the air or on the ground.

Where I suspect his greatest value to us might be is creating space in crowded forward 50 areas. His greatest assets are picking the ball up at pace and getting the ball to the outside quickly, whether for a shot at goal or to release a handball for a teammate running into space. He does this very well. We tend to run out of space to get a clean shot away sometimes, with our repeat entries he could aid in this area. His ability to swoop on a ball and pump out a handball is underrated. Bit of Gary Ablett Jnr (style only) in the way he can swoop on a crumb and get to space quickly, doesn’t need to change pace much. If he had genuine leg speed this asset would be even more valuable.

Marking is above average for height mainly due to courage and ability to hang early. Will take time to adapt to playing against men with his marking.

Pressure is above average through effort and enthusiasm. I question how quick he actually is but definitely applies pressure and impacts in that sense.

I'd have to say I'll be unenthused if we take an inside mid with one of our last selections after passing over Dev Robinson, especially since history shows small pressure forwards can often be found late in the draft or in the rookie draft.

I do wonder if we'll target a Chargers boy with a late pick who knows Jamarra so Marra has a smoother transition to our side next year.

I'm hoping for a pacy runner and a defensive type with our remaining picks.

Can someone explain to me why we don’t have to upgrade a rookie with our third pick? We have Lachie Young, Sweet, Roarke, Khamis and Gardner as rookies, that’s 5 + full senior list. Is Khamis Cat B now?
