    Re: 2019 Draft Watch

In rankings (not phantoms/mocks), Twomey, Draft Central, Doerre & Buckanara say Weightman is the second best small forward after Henry. Comparison is Jamie Elliott.

That's not a knock on Weightman, Pickett or Bergman but I don't know how we could pass on Robertson
Just saw the article and thought you’d have a few concerns with it!

We’d be very brave to pass on DR and BK.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Twomey's latest PD suggests we are likely to take 3 picks to the draft so this could well be right.

I would argue very strongly that these 2 were the best 2 players at the Nationals this year. The highest junior level. That has to count for something. What could be the justification for choosing 15 others ahead of them?

While it's all speculative we will no doubt have some reasons if we do pass on them but they're very good players and would have to be considered.

They could be the best player in juniors but if clubs don’t think you can get better they will chase players with upside, ones they see improving eg Bontempelli , nowadays it’s about room for improvement.
If these two players have already reached their peak they won’t be rated so high.
Under 18s football is hard to judge, I am not sure if it’s a rule or an agreement but I believe at the U18s Level they Don’t tag as they want players to show their skills.
So you could look extreme good with skills but not so good under a tag.
Plenty of players over the years looked like stars but were average in AFL.
Not saying these two aren’t good, but just giving you a reason some stars at under 18 level don’t make it.

                1. I hope this is correct and thank goodness if it's true.
                2. Why the #%!* wasn't he always a category B rookie? I am still baffled by that decision 12 months later.

I wish there was more transparency around this. How hard is it to confirm exactly what his list status is, rather than relying on whispers and rumours?

Yes it's ridiculous that there has been absolutely no public information from the club on Buku's contract status for next year. We have inside word that he received a 2 year deal straight off the bat, but if you were to go purely off the information released by the club you would have to wonder what he is doing at pre-season training seemingly without a contact for next season!

True, but some recruiters look for a real competitive streak too and statistically a higher ratio of CP to UCP has been a hge indicator of draft success (albeit it's a measure of number of games played, not quality of games played).

Dev played half a game at the champs with a dislocated shoulder as captain, that ticks a lot of boxes. Ward went ok on the HFF in his early career with the same competitive streak.

Half of the AFL doesn't 'tag' either.

If you are consistently the best player (players in the case of Robertson and Kemp) in your age group coming through, why wouldn't that translate.

I cannot understand the negatives on Robertson. All he did was lead WA to the champs, set the record for most possessions and win the Larke Medal. Oh - and he is the newphew of a former AFL premiership captain.

Talk of him falling out of the top 10 is ridiculous. The clubs can't get out of their own way. They have a 200-game midfielder looking them in the eyes and they can't figure out that 1+1=2. If he is there at 13 (or 14, or 15 or whenever our pick finally is) when he goes on to captain Geelong to a premiership I am so going to say 'I told you so'...I might even take out advertising space to do it.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

All the AFL recruiters would be like Basil Fawlty talking to that American bloke who wanted the Waldorf salad. "Oh you said ROBINson, ah yes I can't stand his American, well, not American more like his trans Atlantic garbage"
