VFL REPORT | Cavarra, Jong star in scratch match win

Footscray VFL record a 48-point win in their scratch match hit-out against North Melbourne.

Another bag of four goals from Ben Cavarra has helped Footscray VFL record a 48-point win in their scratch match hit-out against North Melbourne.

With temperatures reaching close to 30°C at VU Whitten Oval on Good Friday, the hosts kept their cool while storming home eight goals to one in the second half of the 16.8 (104) to 8.8 (56) triumph.

A somewhat scrappy start saw majors exchanged early, before three consecutive Bulldog goals to end the opening term.
The Kangaroos clawed their way back in the second quarter, closing the gap to just eight points at the main break. But it was all red, white and blue after that.

Cavarra’s quartet of goals brings him to a total of eight in two weeks, while Lin Jong contributed with three of his own and was the dominant midfielder on the ground.

Josh Schache and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan also added two goals each. Rhylee West found plenty of the footy, while Buku Khamis was strong in defence.

Footscray VFL will open their 2021 campaign against the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday 17 April at VU Whitten Oval.

    FOOTSCRAY 5.3 8.6 12.8 16.8 (104)
    NORTH MELBOURNE 3.2 7.4 8.6 8.8 (56)

GOALS: Cavarra 4, Jong 3, Ugle-Hagan 2, Schache 2, Butler, Garcia, Wallis, Weightman, Boyd.

I had missed this thread until tonight - thanks for the comprehensive reports. It's nice to read that Cav and Buku have continued their good form - I'm hopeful that they will both get chances at senior level soon.

Given this has become the defacto VFL 2021 thread (can we get a name change), I've found this link to book tickets for the Round 1 match against Gold Coast:

Based on this, the game has been moved to 11.20am on Saturday, with gates opening at 10am. You need to book a ticket to attend. It's $5.37 for a Bulldogs member (assume you'll need to show your membership card at the door along with digital ticket) or $10 gen admin.

Bold is players who would definitely be in North's current best 22. I reckon this side would definitely give them a run for their money.

Agreed. I believe Mods and bornadog can do this by editing the 1st post.

Surely Footscray would have to be hot favourites to be there at the pointy end.

I know a lot can happen with injuries in the 1's filtering down, but if we remain relatively healthy this list should be pretty dominant.

I have looked at the ladder and fully realised how bonkers the set up for the VFL/Eastern states football league is.

22 teams, still only 8 finals spots and the season is only 15 games long.

Imagine being the team that misses by % or one win, but when you look back through your 15 games you have played x amount more top 8 teams than someone who has made finals. I think, as a minimum, they should have looked at a 7v10 and 8v9 playoff weekend.

So like what happened to us in the AFLW? Still dirty on that.

That play-in tournament would be fun as but that's for the most part not what the AFL is about. Also they have totally messed up the website, it's impossible to actually find out how the games went now.

There was a practice match at Punt Rd today featuring players from Richmond, Essendon and North (North players were in sprinkled across the Richmond and Essendon teams). No Bulldogs featured which is interesting given we didn't get involved in it last week either.

We play Friday night so having players play on a Sunday probably would've ruled them out of playing Friday night. Additionally, I think we're using this time as their bye break, rather than the first few days after the last match due to Melbourne still being in lockdown at that time.

It was those club's fringe players in the scrimmage, replacing a VFL game effectively. Bevo was quoted in the post match as saying we'd have our break post the Geelong game.
