    Lewis Young

    31 disposals, 17 marks, seven rebound 50s

“’Lewy’ had a good intercept game – he showed some leadership among the defence being the only AFL player at that end of the ground. On the whole, we thought he used the footy better than he has, but the strength of his game was his intercept marking and spoiling.”

He is a flake with the ball but today wasn't as bad as usual. We are only using good instead of great intercept mark as we don't rate him much at the moment

    Mitch Wallis

29 disposals, nine marks, five tackles, one goal

“In a really contested game, Mitch led with contested possessions and clearances so his inside and midfield game was great. It was a really strong performance – he’s playing more as a midfielder with us than he might otherwise, but his contribution was impressive.”

Bevo told us to play him in the midfield

    Josh Schache

13 disposals, six marks, three goals

“’Schach’ finished up with three goals, but had a tough day against the Carlton defenders. He kept on going and ended up kicking the goal that got us back in front, after competing in an important ruck contest. His persistence was really important.”

He won't get a call up for awhile, if ever again, but good on him for not quitting yet

    Louis Butler

19 disposals, six marks, five inside 50s

“Louis’ athletic traits are impressive – his run was incredible from goal-line to goal-line. He’s continuing to work on his aerial game, but his involvements as a winger at both ends of the ground was outstanding.”

Talking aerial focus has reminded me of the next guy

    Cody Weightman

Nine disposals, six tackles, two goals

“This was probably Cody’s best game for the year. Surprisingly his stats were low, but he was massive in terms of influence. His defending in the front half was great, and he was really impressive in his capacity to impact the game without the ball in hand.”

    Jamarra Ugle-Hagan

    Two disposals, one goal

“Jamarra got off to a good start before receiving that head knock. We knew coming up against Carlton that manic forward pressure would be important, and he actually led the way for that in the early stages of the game. He had a real appetite to help us keep the ball in our forward half.”

    Ben Cavarra

21 disposals, five marks, six inside 50s, two goals

“Ben played both forward and wing time. His contribution was impressive – he generated scoring shots through intercepts, turnovers and tackles. It was nice that he had the flexibility to help us on the wings.”

    Dom Bedendo

12 disposals, three tackles, seven inside 50s, one goal

“Dom is getting better each week. He kicked three goals last week, but this was probably a better performance in many ways. His ability to connect to other forwards and be involved in scoring chains was a step forward towards a more complete game.

He is raw AF but we like what we see

    Roarke Smith

    15 disposals, four tackles

“As a winger, Roarke helped out our defenders enormously – as a defender himself that’s a natural disposition he has. The next step for Roarke is to also be an offensive threat.”

He is pretty bloody limited but he works hard

    Riley Garcia

22 disposals, six tackles, four inside 50s

“Riley played a lot more forward time than he has in the past, so he’s learning that role having mostly done his best work as a midfielder. When he went into the midfield, he was a valuable contributor. Adding the forward stuff to his game is the next step.”

    On VFL-listed players…

“We had 11 guys out there who had played four games or less – so to come up against a more experienced Carlton team, it was a really good win. Charlie Cormack (22 disposals, nine marks, nine rebounds 50s) as an intercept defender was terrific. The skipper Lachie Sullivan (25 disposals, seven marks, three inside 50s) was really influential through the midfield too, after taking a heavy hit early. You could see how important the win was for these guys who have got a little more experience - he led beautifully.”

Victorian VFL games cancelled again this week.

State league games elsewhere will continue, decent leg up for those clubs, continuing to get game time into their depth players while Vic clubs get zilch.

Bad for Marra. Missed two with concussion and now two due to cancellations.

Best of luck to Boyd, another guy from our system who can hopefully play at AFL level.

I've spoken about it before but sad to see Boyd go. I think he can really play and would've liked us to consider him at year's end.

AFL mid-season draft: Spotswood coach on Jordan Boyd’s rapid rise

Jordan Boyd was one of several great stories to emerge from Wednesday’s AFL mid-season rookie draft.

The Spotswood product and Footscray VFL player was snapped up by Carlton at pick No.20 despite not progressing through the traditional NAB League pathway as a teenager.

The Blues’ press release described the 22-year-old as a “medium forward” capable of playing as a defender.

But Spotswood coach and JJ Liston Trophy winner Anthony Eames said Boyd’s best position could be elsewhere.

“There’s a bit of a narrative around that he’s a forward,” Eames said.

“I don’t believe he’s a small forward, I believe he’s a wingman and half-back flanker, and he can kick goals from outside 50.”

Boyd has displayed his ability to hurt opposition sides in attack, booting 32 goals from 27 games for the Woodsmen across the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

He contributed three majors for the Dogs in his state league debut two years ago and had played all five matches for the undefeated side this season, averaging 16 possessions and four marks in a defensive role.

But while his ideal position may have created some conjecture, there are no question marks over Boyd’s elite kicking skills.

“He sees targets down the ground and has an ability to be able to pick them out and kick the ball 60m,” Eames said.

“He’s a magnificent kick on the run and he plays the wing position particularly well. He positions himself well, is always there for a switch (kick) out of defence and he carries the ball.

“Potentially at different times, he’s an 80-100m player, where he can carry the ball and kick it 60m.

“He’s certainly got better kicking skills than a lot of blokes I’ve seen. He’s created an opportunity for himself, which is fantastic, and had terrific support from Footscray VFL as well.”

Boyd has joined the likes of Callan Ward, Bachar Houli, Lachlan Fogarty and Connor Menadue in graduating from Spotswood to the AFL ranks.

Carlton list manager Nick Austin, who previously worked at the Western Bulldogs, said Boyd was “someone who has fought for everything that’s come his way” and was “the kind of player who can thrive in an AFL environment”.

He also represented the Western Region Football League at interleague level and Vic Metro in 2019.

“It’s awesome for him personally,” Eames said.

“It’s again a great one for our club and Tony Walshe, our under-18s coach.

“He’s a ripping kid … works hard on his craft, particularly the last three years. Before that, he wasn’t overly committed to footy, as far as he played a lot of cricket.

“He only did his first pre-season three years ago realistically.

“To make it at the elite level, you’ve got to have that point of difference, and a lot of the time it comes back to what you’re committed to, how hard you are prepared to work, your mental capacity.

“He’s now on a path for himself and he needs to make the most of it because you only get one crack.”

Asked if he was surprised by how quickly Boyd’s stocks had risen given he had only a handful of VFL appearances to his name, Eames said: “Anybody that goes and watches him distribute the footy in general play the way that he does … I would have thought at worst he’s going to be a very, very good VFL footballer.

“If someone’s prepared to, which they have, believe in him, he’s the type of kid that can make the gap up.

“He’s got a lot of improvement in him and I think full-time footy will make him, I really do.”

Eames said there were plenty of hidden gems in local football.

“It comes back to just having someone that believes in them and gives them a go. That’s certainly the case with Jordy, he’s worked hard for it,” he said.

Anyone know if we were involved in this? I assume not since I've not heard anything about it.

Five clubs pooled their Melbourne-based talent for a scratch match between two teams at Ikon Park on Sunday, a move which may bemuse locked-down Melbourne but one which the clubs say is vital as the season sits on tenterhooks. One club official said it was ticked off by the AFL and thankfully so, as players at non-Victorian teams continue to play in their second-tier competitions and thus getting match practice. You have to wonder if the State Government’s health experts believe it was a good idea.

It did for the other clubs I believe, but we weren't involved. From Bevo's presser comments, it sounded like we weren't comfortable with the arrangements for our players and their game time etc.

I really hope for our fringe players sake that they can get some form of game time this weekend.
