Re: Williamstown vs Port Melbourne (Round 20)

I'll mention a couple of points:

Johnson - I really don't rate him that highly. He seems to butcher the ball quite a bit.

Boumann - The kid will make it. He is very quick for a big man.

Tiller - Beat bigger opponents and goes hard.

Lynch - Not a fan; totally agree with The Doctor's assessment - Pat Rose to the rookie list next year, Lynch gone.

Roughead - A lot to like, however he wont be ready to be our back-up ruckman next year. Skipper gets one more year on the list IMO.

O'Keefe - Had a brilliant kick under pressure the 3rd, but wouldn't have had him in my bests over the 4 quarters.

Wood - I love his attack on the footy, courage, & the way he runs the ball out of defence. Anyone calling for Griffen to go to the HBF might want to see how another pre-season treats Easton first, because that is the way I see him developing as a running defender.

Sadly, I thought Willy's forwardline looked like it functioned pretty well. I say sadly because Cordy & Grant weren't there.

By the way, how old is Dean Galea? There is a bit to like there. Would we consider rookie-ing 2 Williamstowners?

Good win at Port as they had won 21 straight there.

Great result for Willy today with the Bullants thumping Frankston and sneaking into 3rd spot, which sets up a home final on Sunday.

If Port had finished 3rd, Willy would've been forced to play them at TEAC Oval, which is an absolute injustice.

        Great weekend for Bulldog/Willy fans.

I noticed that as well, Im not sure how well he reads the ball through the air and is a much better mark when coming towards it and attacking the footy.

With Everitt and Minson doing a good job yesterday sway your opinion or do you still think we need him?

Re: Williamstown vs Port Melbourne (Round 20)

Quick write up on the reserves....

Grant looked lively early and his leads were honoured more than they usually are. He really should've kicked 4 or 5 but for shoddy goal kicking. Once again, he played high up the ground despite Jones being a better fit for that role. I'm not sure if it's Grant just getting sucked up into the middle or he's playing to coaching instructions, but he spent more time in the middle of the ground than some of the Willy onballers. He'll struggle to get back into the seniors team this year. Interesting to note that he was given a stint at centre half back and got his hands on the ball a few times, before being moved forward.

                      Jones
lead hard all day and is a natural at centre half forward. His goal kicking was off again but he was also creative in hitting up targets deeper in the forward 50. I'm looking forward to seeing him let off the leash after a big pre-season, as he has the build to have an impact at AFL level in a relatively short amount of time.

Cordy was too classy for his direct opponent and looked like torching Port early. One of his goals was outrageous: picking up a loose ball in greasy conditions, shrugging off a tackle and snapping across his body. For a guy that 204cm it was pretty impressive. He came off late in the game with a knock, but reading Maple's report he seems to be ok.

                      White
had an absolute ripper, finishing up with 36 touches. Easily the best game I've seen him play, he took the game on, shrugged tackles and was clean with his disposal. I was thinking about which rookies won't be there next year and I was certain that White would get the chop prior to the game on the weekend, but he played so well that I'm re-considering.

Mulligan outplayed his direct opponent but looked a bit sluggish when the ball hit the ground, running past it a few times which really left him vulnerable - luckily he wasn't made to pay. I like his aerial ability, as he rarely gets beaten in a marking contest and he does take the game on when given a chance to run and carry. But he's still developing his footy smarts and is 12-18 months away from being close to AFL quality IMO. He does have size and athletic ability on his side, added to the fact that we do lack key defensive depth. With a shallow draft, I think he might stay at the Kennel.

Shaw again battled hard and was quite good at ground level. Wasn't a stand out but you can never question his work rate. Watching Roughead's game, it just shows up Shaw's weaknesses - I don't think he would've been able to clunk that screamer in the goal square or have the mobility to put the ball on his boot to snap a classy goal. I think he might be up against it to keep his spot next year.

                      Daniels
was an absolute brute in close - just a feisty competitor and prepared to get his hands dirty time and again. I'd like to see him play the role of ball carrier as he's shown he has the ability to break the lines and kick long goals, but the coaches obviously rate his ball winning ability in close. He'll be important to the reserves finals chances, and I'm looking forward to seeing how he performs with a full pre-season.

O'Shea started slowly but worked into the game. Was played out of the goal square and showed good acceleration, taking a number of marks easily on the lead. He's decision making is still very, very raw and his goal kicking needs work but he shows rare desperation on the field (if Grant had his attitude he'd be a much better player). His next few weeks will be very important.

Ogle was ok - made a few glaring errors but also provided some good run and carry. He's been played purely off the half back line all year and I would've liked to see him played up forward on a few occasions purely for his development.

Wight was solid without really standing out. I think Boumann has finally leapfrogged him in the coach's mind so it's going to be very hard for Cam to get back into the seniors, which would suggest he'll play at his Bulldogs career at VFL reserves level - an inglorious end for a guy who looked like he was about to take the next step after the 2006 final against Collingwood.

NOTE: I just watched the seniors replay and can't believe O'Keefe was awarded the best player - I must have been watching a different game. His disposal wasn't clean for most of the day, he gave up on a few chases that I thought was disappointing and his decision making was slightly off compared to the heights I know he can reach. Joyce was much better, as was Davies.

For a kid still in high school, coming off a limited pre-season and barely any regular training throughout the year, he shows plenty of promise.

He knows where and when to lead, which as a centre half forward is crucial.
