Re: The 2011 draft and trading thread

I think we'll take him in the pre-season draft if GWS doesn't snap him up first.

We did look briefly at a trade, probably until we realised that he may be delisted -- we probably didn't want to get burnt the same way we did with DJ last year and trade a pick away for someone we could have picked up for free.

    Setanta > Barlow.

Re: The 2011 draft and trading thread

I can see many logical arguments for picking up Setanta.

He really fits what we need, a big, bullocking, aggressive body in the forward line,
and ditto in the ruck. Perfect support for our developing list.

BUT, he really would be wallpapering over cracks and he is pretty clumsy.

I'd be happy to have him for free, but we might be better off just playing the kids and copping a couple of lean years with good draft picks.

Setanta will be bowing out around the same time as a lot of our senior list, so he's not going to span across the chasm between our senior and junior players.

Having said that, I would prefer him to Barlow.

I don't mind Barlow but I agree that Setanta is the better option.

I dont have much time for Setanta, he seems to be good in the first few games every year for the Blues then wouldnt be sighted after that.
He looks clumsy and doesnt get enough of it.
But in saying that new club, new plan, different coach and different job who knows.
At pick 70 you have an experienced player and we have been good with picking those in Hall, Hudson, Aker(playing wise)

I am not that optimistic about Cordy, but would like to give him a go, same as Panos. I guess what I am saying is we need to develop some of these guys by giving them a chance to gain some experience.

That's not true. Dunno where people get this idea from that he kicked 4 in a final this year.

He kicked a goal against Essendon & didn't kick a goal against West Coast in Carlton's 2 finals games.

I would consider O'hAilpin for reasons stated, provides some insurance at both ends whilst helps to protect Jones and Grant for another season.

One of Mulligan or Barlow will need to move on. We know what we get with Barlow, he performed as would've been expected of him.

With Mulligan, we're still hoping there's more. Doesnt display the necessary min. skill level. That he couldn't break in this season with all that went down in our backline is concerning. Unfortunately I believe it's time we bit the bullet.

On a different topic, anyone interested in Travis Tuck ? Something tells me he will get picked up. Had a very good season at VFL level. His body has matured although doesn't show burst speed. As with the Setanta O'hAilpin case he could provide some midfield insurance. I'm not sold on him but is a player that interests me as to where his career goes from here. Was highly regarded by some at Hawthorn before his drug issues.

                              A medium paced inside mid?
DFA would be on par with him and doesn't have the off-field issues. Pass from me.

I would definately go for Adam Maric. He's a lot better than a lot of the smaller forwards we have and I suspect could have a breakout year in the right environment.

As for Setanta, I wouldn't be opposed going for him with a late pick.
