I've seen Talia do a good job on Patton and Elton this year so he can contain the bigger forwards. He definitely has the physicality for it. In saying all that, his leap is quite poor and his arm length isn't very long which does make it much more harder for him.

I would not choose him with our first pick though.
To tell you the truth they are struggling. You can see they may do a good job but against the big fowards they are constantly battling.

These kids now are all growing into monsters. I agree with Greystache, tall is now anyone over 195cm. Your 190 to 192/3 isnot overly tall any more.

        Re: The draft.

After a bit of phantom draft reading (taken with salt), I would be over the moon if Taylor Adams fell to pick 17 which is unlikely, and barring that McKenzie which is more likely.

Happy to save hunting for a key defender until next year - deeper draft with more qualtiy picks to use - than reaching for Talia this year at the expense of a potential top line mid this year.

Could be an interesting draft given the fact GWS are bound to draft a mixture of players meaning some high quality mids may slide (according to Miss Quale). I would like to see us draft a quality mid to fill a much needed gap with the exodus of Callan Ward. Agree to look at KPB next year with our comp pick.

IT IS hard to imagine there was a more interesting, likeable character at this month's NAB AFL Draft Combine than Brandon Ellis.

Ellis looks likely to be selected in November's NAB AFL Draft after a stunning 2011 season with the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup. No wonder when we meet he carries the wide grin of a boy on the cusp of achieving something he has been working towards for much of his life.

GEELONG Falcons midfielder and small forward Devon Smith played one of the games of the NAB National Under-18 Championships when he had 28 disposals and kicked six goals in Vic Country's second-round game against Northern Territory.

But it was downhill from there. "Other than that, there weren't too many highlights," he said.

Anybody interested in these two (Smith and Ellis)? I'd be be happy enough with Ellis, I think he could develop into an inside midfielder. Attacks the ball hard, courageous, hard worker and uses the ball very well.

Smith not so keen on, but we could use another goal kicking midfielder.

You don't use a first rounder on a guy 175cm and although I know others disagree, I think we're good for small defenders.

We were keen on Dion Prestia last year weren't we and from memory he is 175cm tall?
Smith actually measured in a bit shorter than 175cm as well. He was the shortest player at the combine at 173.6 cm.

Hmm... Dalrymple seems to like the shorter players. So far he's recruited DJ, Dahlhaus, Schofield, Hooper, Tutt and JJ. I think we probably have enough midgets.

Hooper was a decent player in junior ranks, probably playing against much shorter opposition in the TAC Cup....and look at how he has performed at senior level (AFL/VFL) playing against larger opponents

The last draft before Dalrymple was a tall one - Cordy, Jones & Roughead.
That would have influenced his first draft quite a bit.

Yeah but we will have at least 5 senior listed players under 180cm by the end of this year. We had none before Dalrymple took over. I think he's gone a bit overboard, most clubs only have 2-3 players under 180cm.

Perhaps that's a little "moneyball" in practice right there - players under 180cm are often overlooked so there is some talent available amongst this group that doesn't represent their draft position taken?
3 of the 6 chosen were rookie listed, and I think Dalhaus, Tutt & Schofield will make the grade (jury out on the others).

Schofield is listed at 182cm, so while a small defender he's not overly short.

Fair call. I don't think you can have too many in your side though, 3 maximum IMO.

My bad, he was listed as 179cm when first drafted.
