Re: Williamstown Teams: Round 3
Hard to predict. Cordy hasn't done anything wrong but it would require either Minson or Roughead to be dropped which is probably a hard call. Sherman could close the gap quickly and Tutt and Veszpremi offer a bit. I'd be trying to get Wallis back into the side but not just for a week.
It's been a problem for a while but when we are up against it and the momentum isn't going our way, we simply have no one to kick it to. We end up choosing Minson, Roughead or Jones as there isn't any other option but i think it's more in the hope that the best outcome would be if they cause a spoil and a throw in closer to the goals.
This really impacts the teams confidence in going more direct or taking risks, so perhaps we are screaming out for a Cordy, Hill, Austin or Panos to get a game if their marking skills are any better than what we have already.Comment

Re: Williamstown Teams: Round 3
Most badckman played forward in their junior days, as that's where talented players were often needed the most - CHF, the hardest position on the ground. It's not confined to the Bulldogs.
Presti was a "high leaping" forward when drafted, Fossie started as a forward, Markovic played CHF in the VFL pre-knee injury, Shoenmakers played CHF at TAC Cup level. Heck, even Ling started as a FF.
We could draft pure defenders if it makes people feel better - our last first round CHB was Everitt...
But then again the bulldogs obviously didn't rate him and he was impeding the progress of our other stars like Jesse Wells.
I couldn't resist!Comment

Yes Ledge we have been doing it for years even as far back as tits Kennedy but you need quality backs too. I do agree Cordy deserves a shot at FF we need someone to take a catch and kick some goals.Comment

Poor First Half Costs Seagulls
A poor first half has cost Williamstown dearly in their Easter Sunday clash with Geelong at Torquay. Once again a big crowd turned out for the Easter Blockbuster, but it was the local fans going home happier after seeing their side hold on for a 7 point victory. A horrid start by the Seagulls saw a 45 point deficit at half time, however a storming third quarter reduced that margin to just 5 points at the final change. A see-sawing final quarter resulted in Williamstown throwing everything at the young Cats but the task proved too much against the wind.
Winning the toss, Williamstown elected to go with what was a considered a strong wind at Torquay’s Spring Creek Reserve, it was Geelong however that came out of the blocks better running the ball in numbers into the breeze and creating early scoreboard pressure. The likes of Captain Troy Selwood and George Horlin-Smith were pivotal early in winning the football and creating inside 50
opportunities. A goalless quarter from the Gulls resulted, while the local side managed 3 valuable goals against the breeze.
The second quarter saw Geelong use the wind to their advantage with their dangerous small forwards taking advantage of lots of inside 50’s. Williamstown managed to register their first two goals of the afternoon but an avalanche of Geelong scoring opportunities saw the Cats register a 45 point lead at half time. Only inaccurate kicking from the Cats prevented the margin from being greater.
After some half time words from Coach Peter German it was a different Williamstown outfit that took the field in the second half. Right from the get go it appeared a different team was playing. An early goal to Tom Hill as a result of some great running from Matthew Panos set the tone with defenders Cameron Lockwood, Jason Johannisen and Patrick Veszpremi providing run from the back half. Mark Austin was given the task of shutting down the dangerous Josh Walker and performed the task admirably as the Seagulls took the game to the Cats. Tom Hill kicked 4 goals for the quarter as quick ball movement provided the Williamstown forwards with much more opportunity. In the blink of an eye the margin was back to only 5 points at the final change with the Seagulls with all the momentum, but facing the breeze in
the last quarter.
*!Buoyed by the third quarter effort the Seagulls played with the same intensity in the last quarter throwing everything at the Geelong team despite kicking into the strong breeze. Jordan Mead was instrumental taking a courageous contested mark and then kicking an opportunistic goal to keep the Seagulls knocking at the door, unfortunately time was against the Gulls as the siren sounded with the Cats ahead by 7 point, and Williamstown left to dissect their first half performance which ultimately cost them the game.
