If GWS or Gold Coast nominate Viney or Joe Daniher for that matter, they ensure that the father/son club take the player and leave another in the mix for everybody including their next round.

The only downside could be that they are left with the father/son prospect. This would only be an issue if the player chosen (i.e. Viney or Daniher) is not worth the pick they use.

If they bid pick 1 on Viney and Melbourne take him with pick 3, GWS then use pick 1 on the next choice, who is likely to be top notch anyway and the player they would choose anyway if they decided that Viney is off limits.

The pressure of No 1 then sits more with Viney than the actual No 1 taken on draft day.
    Scenario 1
Lets say GWS and GC have the 1st and 2nd picks of the draft and Melbourne has the 3rd.

During the father son bidding process if GWS nominates Viney with their 1st pick (#1 in the draft) then Melbourne has a choice of using pick 3 to acquire Viney and they will do that if they have to. Vinet is now theiors for #3.
When it comes time for the National draft, the player GWS selects isn't really the number one pick of the draft any more in fact he becomes the default number one pick.
I just don't think clubs would be too happy to do that. They want to sell the fact to their members they have the player they rated as the best in the land.

Scenario 2 is around that if GWS and GC decide they just want the best 2 best players and don't want to make a bid for Viney then Melbourne can get him in the 2nd round.

Now I don't think this is an issue for some later picks (5 to 7) if Melbourne finish 6th or 7th but I think there is some pressure on the clubs with the very early picks to decide if they want to make Melbourne pay a high price more than if they want to sell the merits of the players they draft.

I saw quite a bit of Viney last year and I thought he would be a top 5 pick this year. Not sure about top 3 and yesterdays game he wasn't super impressive. However I think Gold Coast need someone like him and would nominate him.

They certainly might be bold enough to do so.

Remember he was coming back from a broken jaw and his confidence could have been down a bit.

It was a terrible game, I couldn't take much out of it anyway.

I don't see it as an issue at all. They can easily say that the player they got they really wanted and boast about forcing Melbourne's hand. The trade off for them is a better option for their 2nd pick.

GWS and Sheedy will bid for Viney( player Sheedy loves)
Another aspect would be the piss off Melb aspect( Sheedy rejected for the coaching gig)
Senior AFL types struggle in those conditions, let alone kids.

The word yesterday is that it was weighing on GWS and maybe not so much on GC Suns.

Personally I hope Ollie Wines continues to impress and rise up the ranking, because I would have thought he is the type of player we would pass on - another contested ball magnet.

So if he rises into contention for Port and Melbourne, then someone else falls to us.

Wines is a top 5 pick IMO.
