Re: Round 3- Williamstown vs Coburg

I think Stringer will be most effective doing half and half, still spending a heap of time in the middle as he did as a junior. As a stay at home full forward he is going to get bigger and stronger opponents, realistically how many times will he outmark a Harry Taylor or Luke Mcpharlin? He might get these guys on the ground but one on one for a bloke his height it will be a struggle to outmark the real A grade tall backs. I'd love to see him modeled on a Jobe Watson or Josh Kennedy who spends more time in the forward half, its a tough thing to stop if he starts in the centre square before moving forward and being matched up on the oppositions third tall back.

Don't get me wrong I think we have a champion here but I don't think it will be as a 70 goal a year full forward (would love to eat my words)

It's where the developement of Jones and Cordy becomes even more crucial. If they can be dangerous and hit the scoreboard, it will mean a third tall will have to go to Stringer. A lot of sides have there third tall as a leaner more mobile build ie Tom Young. Stringer will hopefully eat this type of player alive.

That's how I see it too. He's the same height as Jack Darling, not quite as mobile but significantly bigger bodied and stronger. If Jones and Cordy/2nd ruck can be a viable threat then Stringer should eat the third tall defender alive.

I heard from a Williamstown official that in the development game Hunter had in excess of 40 possessions in the midfield. You'd expect him to be paying seniors next week but the 12 man rule might make that difficult if Wood was the only injury this weekend.

I think 40 touches deserves a promotion. Could he not replace Jong who got injured?

Round 2 Match Report – Williamstown v Coburg

Williamstown have notched up their first win of the VFL season, defeating Coburg by 100 points at Burbank Oval on Saturday. After leading by just six points midway through the third term, the Seagulls piled on 17 of the last 19 goals of the match to record a 24.13 (157) to 8.9 (57) victory.

The match got off to quite a slow start, with just two goals kicked in the opening term by Williamstown’s Jason Tutt and Justin Sherman to help the Seagulls get out to a 14-point lead at the first change. The second quarter followed suit, with neither team hitting the scoreboard until Coburg brought up their first goal of the match at the 12-minute mark of the second term. From there, the game began to break open as both sides booted consecutive goals during the last 20 minutes of the half.

Charlie Nastasi kicked two of these goals while Jake Stringer also added his name to the scoresheet with a left-foot snap to help the Seagulls on their way.Coburg opened the third quarter strongly, and by the 14-minute mark of the term had the margin back to within a goal. From there though, Williamstown put the foot down and started to win contests all over the ground. The midfield combination of Jackson Macrae, Ben Jolley and Cam Lockwood began to win everything out of the middle while up forward, Bulldogs youngster Jake Stringer had a purple patch, booting four out of his five goals consecutively in the latter stages of the third term.

Williamstown were then able to build on this momentum, booting eight goals to two in the final term. Ed Carr kicked two goals within five minutes to cap off his great game, while down back key defenders Mark Austin and Lukas Markovic kept the Tigers’ key talls quiet. The 100-point win delighted the Williamstown fans, who were able to watch their side at Burbank Oval for the first time this season.Williamstown now host Werribee at Burbank Oval this Sunday, in what is always a terrific match-up between these two rivals.

              Development Match

The Williamstown development team have continued on from their good form in round one, defeating Coburg by 168 points at the weekend. The Seagulls burst out of the blocks early booting seven goals to one in the first term and never looked back, running out 33.17 (215) to 7.5 (47) winners. The match was highlighted by an incredible final quarter by the Seagulls, kicking 14 goals to clinch their second victory in as many games.

James Flack, Lachlan Hunter and Josh Prudden shone, getting their hands on the footy at the stoppages and linking up well across the ground. The Seagulls development side also faces Werribee next week in a bid to hang onto top spot on the Development League ladder

Do I need to bring up workchoices, or will you take that back?
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

As someone mentioned in a thread last week, I'm a copper. So not the biggest CFMEU fan at the moment.

                    Just watched the second half.

I'll sum it up in one word.

                    Wow.

Stringer and Macrae, in pure ability terms, are so ready for AFL its ridiculous.

If they played all year at Willy they'd just about tie for the Liston.

Also watched the game on replay
Stringer very impressive. His poise with the ball was superb, setting up 3 shots at goal by just choosing the right option.
Macraejust seems to keep getting involved and looks the part.
Vezspremi was the best I have seen from him. Attacked the contest.
Grant I though he showed terrific intensity and 2nd and 3rd efforts that have been missing from his game. I would promote him now when his confidence is probably at its highest.
Williams I though showed some class. Obviously a bit of rust, but when you consider how little football he has actually played, he was excellent. I would also bring him straight in as he is no more likely to get hurt at senior level. Offers more than Campbell/Cordy and would provide back up for Roughy that is currently lacking.
Howard, did shank one badly when he obviously did not read the wind and gifted a goal to Coburg. Was ok but did nothing to suggest a senior berth is warranted.
Pearce Was quite impressive. Put himself in and gave something at bothe ends. He is a chance to make it.
Talia Solid and see him as the good solid backmen. Don't expect he will be ever a dominant style player, but looks like a really good long term Morris type replacement.
Austin Solid VFL player but just depth cover
Markovic Is what he is. Good defending in one on one marking contest, but it doesn't look like we will see anything more.
Tutt Really liked Tutt's game. He could have kicked multiple goals from range but he put himself in position. Would not be unhappy to see him promoted.

                          Link for Report Card

                          Williamstown Seniors:

Westernbulldogs.com.au chats to Development Coach Ashley Hansen about the progress of the Bulldogs listed players in the VFL.

Patrick Veszpremi: He played well Paddy – kicked extremely well and contributed on the scoreboard with three goals. His work rate around the ground was probably the best for the year in staying involved in the contest. He played his role really well for the side.

Jason Tutt: Tutty also played half forward and we started to really see some elite running patterns from him, as he started to use his pace and his aerobic ability which are his two main weapons. His defensive pressure was also a highlight of Tutty’s game. Probably cost himself on the scoreboard a couple of times, missing goals that we thought he could have finished off, but he is in good form.

Jarrad Grant: Grant was also good playing predominantly up forward. His defensive pressure was the best it has been for a year. He hit the score board but also missed a couple he probably should have taken. He was also unselfish on a couple of occasions to help his teammates, so he had a solid day.

Daniel Pearce: He played just about everywhere on the weekend – he played down back, he was through the midfield and forward. When he went forward he was really dangerous with his strong hands and marking being a highlight. His versatility was really important for Willy’s game plan and he played well.

Lukas Markovic: Marko was very solid all day. He defended well. No frills but did the job and played accordingly, sticking to game structures and rules.

Tom Williams: The main thing for Tommy was he got through the game and he showed some of his athletic prowess with the way he moved. Did some really nice things as well in the ruck, while his ground level work was really good and he physically imposed himself on a couple of occasions. He will be better off for the run.

Michael Talia: Talia had an ok game – he didn’t do anything wrong. It was a solid defensive hitout and he did his job. He didn’t do anything outstanding because it probably wasn’t required of him.

Christian Howard: He had a quieter game by his standards, playing on the half back and wing. Did a couple of really good contested ball, aggressive efforts. He just needs to get some consistency to his game - which he will find I’m sure.

Lin Jong: Started really well – he had six touches before the end of the first quarter where he suffered a fracture to his leg. It’s not a bad break, it’s only a crack of the fibula so it’s a non-weight bearing bone. It’s unfortunate for him with two games and he’s been injured in both, after a solid pre-season.

Jack Macrae: Macrae was probably the best player on the ground for the Bulldogs. His ball use was a highlight, finished off with two goals and 28 touches. He’s really starting to buy into both aspects of the game, defensively and offensively. He is developing really well and showed his class on the weekend.

Jake Stringer: Started slowly but to his credit worked his way into the game really well, to the point where he probably did turn the match in the third quarter with a bit of show time. His contested marking in the second half, work rate and finishing ability were highlights. He’s still working into some match fitness and has got a bit of work to do but is improving rapidly and was a really important player on the day.

Mark Austin: He was good I thought. Early he repelled a few of the Coburg attacks with some strong contested marks in the back half. It was good to see him back himself in and use the ball very well. He was once again a part of that formidable backline that was really solid and strong all day and didn’t give much away.

                          Development League:

Westernbulldogs.com.au chat to Development Coach Chris Maple about the progress of Bulldogs listed players in the VFL Development League at Williamstown.

Lachie Hunter: He had 30 possessions, one goal and ten clearances, outstanding considering he was tagged for two quarters. He used the ball really well and was the best player on the ground throughout the day.

Josh Prudden: Prudden also had 29 possessions, one goal and five clearances on the day. His ball use was outstanding and just his poise under pressure was very good. His willingness to run defensively was excellent.

Fletcher Roberts: He was probably the second best player on the ground, playing as a forward and in the ruck. He took ten marks and wasn’t out marked all day. He led well and kicked three goals, six behinds – so it could have easily have been a big day. There was some very hard running and he played at a very high level.

Jack Redpath: Redpath played his first game down back, so we wanted to have a look at him as a defender. Did very well for a first game, and created a lot of run from behind. Did a lot of one on one marking - won eight or nine marks and kicked an outstanding long goal.

Good point, no mention of him.

interesting they tried Redpath in the backline. Good to see Fletcher play well and Grant gets a big wrap so may be considered this week.

I don't mind Austin. He's got some good AFL experience and is probably a bit ahead of Marko in his ball use and mobility.
