    Our VFL side

Who should be the coach of our VFL side next season? Do we stick with Peter German ro do we look for someone else?

    Thoughts and reasons please.

I don't think Gia should be head coach stright out of AFL.

The side will need structure and experience to grow and teach them on match day. He needs an apprenticeship. All for keeping him on as an assistant but he's got to crawl before he walks at coaching level.

Your reasoning is sound but I'm also interested in who people believe we should consider more than just ruling out names.

If Peter German wants to stay on I'd be more then happy to keep him.

If not I wonder if we'd give someone like Chris Maple the nod. Has experience as a development coach, already works closely with the young pups and seems to have a good rapport amongst the group.
The other name the jumps to mind is Scott West, have watched from a far his coaching at Werribee but seems to be doing a reasonable job. He may jump at the chance of having his own team to work with at the doggies and is clearly a club legend who I'd love back at the club.

Would Scott West look at it?

            Interesting question GVGjr.

German's record stacks up pretty well and I think if he wants the gig it's likely he'd get the nod.

I quite like the idea of Slim that Westy be considered for the role too. He's now got a very solid grounding in coaching and it may be something that appeals to him.

I guess Nathan Bassett is likely to chase an assistant role at AFL level next year, but he's done a great job at Norwood over the past 2.5 years and I see him as being someone who could successfully fill the role. His record of developing mature aged Norwood players to the extent they get picked up by AFL clubs has been great too and if he can help our developing players transition quickly to AFL standard that's a big plus.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Would be happy to stick with German. I think he's done a good job.

Otherwise, I wouldn't mind Ash Hansen. Seems to say the right things. Maybe a bit inexperienced.

I wonder if we'd be interested in someone like Gary Ayres.? He could coach the VFL team and help lend experience in the AFL team's coaches' box.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

The VFL coach will actually be a an assistant to the senior coach.

We really want someone who is primarily development as the win/loss ratio will not be a real consideration.

Match day set ups will be determined more by what that Bulldogs senior coach requires. I would have no problem with Gia taking on the position. Hansen would also seem a good candidate.

I would think someone like Ayres would not be as suited as he would be more interested in his own agenda.

Not the worst idea. I still quite like Ayres.

                      Re: Our VFL side

I assumed that the coach would come from the current coaching staff and that to a point them as a dept of the Club would experience a greater workload. But I haven't thought too much on the org structure so can't say if one way or the other would be best.

GM > Head Coach > Assistants > Fitness/Medical> Specialist coaches.

Thought we'd just pluck someone from the Assistants as a nice fit in the program Mac has developed and I'm assuming the GM will build on.

I sometimes wonder why we cannot consider our own former champions in the same way that Buckley Hird Voss and Worsfold have been rewarded. With that in mind I would prefer that an approach be made to Scott West. I recall Brad Johnson commenting on the positive influence that West had when they were team mates together.

The interesting part is that we are now challenged with finding a coach that can develop players rather than necessarily winning games of football. I think that is a big challenge.

There are plenty of good coaches but I suspect past win loss ratios aren't that important for what we are looking for

Matthew Knights might a good for for that role.

Knights is the polar opposite to McCartney.
I like German or Ayres, but got a feeling it will be an internal selection.
