    This hasn't helped either.

The trading period has been held up in recent days, with clubs to learn on Friday what picks they will receive as compensation for free agents. The wait for the confirmation of those picks has made a number of clubs reluctant to commit to players and deals.

Which is a flaw in the system. It is strange the AFL didn't pick up on it.

I don't know maybe have a Free Agent period first, work out the compensation picks then have the trade period. Is it really that hard?

They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

The trade period must extend beyond the time that Free Agency expires for a number of reasons. One as mentioned by bornadog; clubs needing to know how they're to be compensated.

When a clubs seeks to recruit a free agent, his existing club has 3 days to match the offer, so this needs factoring in & also, if a club does in fact lose a player late on to free agency, they may need to trade from a list management perspective. As an example, let's say Will Minson was a free agent & at the last moment decided to leave, we would need to replace him, more likely externally than internally so we'd need to trade a ruckman in.

Billings is probably the safest selection around our pick.

Not excited by Billings, good player, sure, but not what we need nor should we want.

We don't want or need potentially top line footballers who can play forward and midfield?
                    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

                      Billings, Aish, Scharenberg or Kelly.

                        Cool.

I'm hoping we get either Scharenberg or Billings.

Personal preference for mine. I haven't seen enough of Billings in the midfield to think 'geez he'll be a very good mid who can go forward'. My opinion is the opposite, and a 13th mid forward on the list however good is just dumb for mine. If we keep 4, it's Scharenberg or Bontempelli for me, assuming Kelly and Aish go higher. Scharenberg is the classier model, but I have the same knock, not enough midfield time. Or maybe I just really love Kelly and Bontempelli and am looking for cogent arguments to suit my belief system....

Does it matter? If we see Billings as the best player available at 4 then thats who you draft.

Just remember we look at all these players and macca is very watchful of mindset. So I suppose if we have a choice, mindset will determine the pick.
