It also takes the pressure of our other picks so we aren't forced to reach for a tall if the one we wanted is gone
Agree boydogs. The way I see it, if we get a rated tall at 20/21, then we might take the risk to see if we can get Brown at 51 (or even rookie). If the cards don't fall our way early, we may feel it necessary to take him at 30 for insurance. I hope it doesn't work out this way, as it will reduce our intake of quality kids. We have a lot of good kids, but top clubs need to keep filling up the coffers.

      Re: 2015 Draft Watch

I wouldn't be overly keen on Brown at 30.

Although he had a good season in the VFL, he's been a solid performer at VFL level his entire career. In his years at Geelong, he really struggled at AFL level and whilst I think he's worth Pick 50ish/rookie given he's matured and did OK for Essendon in the NAB Cup, I wouldn't be prepared to spend a top 30 pick on him.

I agree TBB, but in a scenario where our favoured talls don't land early and Brown could likely be snapped up in the 40s (good chance), I could understand a tough list management call being made to take him earlier than desired.

Also, Brown did have a troublesome plate removed from his foot after the 2013 season, so last year's form is probably a fairer reflection of his abilities than his Geelong form. Definitely prefer 51 though.

It's a bit of a different proposition to that.

A Ben McKay, Hibberd, Skinner, Allen draft is great. Realistic chance to be available, not really reaching for anyone, fills our needs. The problem is Talia is gone, Roughead is moving to the ruck, and we couldn't land a ruck or KPD in the trade period. None of those 4 draft picks would be ready to go next year, we would have Joel Hamling & Dale Morris taking the 2nd & 3rd talls and a 19yo Zaine Cordy as our first backup.

The question isn't so much if Ben McKay is on the board at 20 and Skinner at 30 we go with those guys instead of Mitch Brown, it's do we decide to get someone to fill the gap for next year or load up on kids for down the track

You could look at Mitch Brown and say Skinner has a higher ceiling, but he may never make it at all. If you didn't take Brown you would want two KPD's in case one doesn't make it, if you take Brown you can be player type agnostic with the other 3 picks and have 3 best available kids coming in, instead of 2 needs picks and 2 others
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

If we were to get a couple of promising key positions types and knowing that they will take time it still means someone like Brown could offer us a fair bit. I would still think he should be the last player selected but he would fit in with us. Even if we missed him and snared another KPP then it's not the end of the world. They will take time though.

Skinner as our 3rd pick is a bit of a reach from my perspective but if we were interested then why not.

He catches the eye with his run. His kicking might need some work

I get your point but, in my opinion, if Brown's value is to tide us over for a year or 2, I don't think that justifies burning an early pick. I would rather rookie a Watson or Grimley and get more quality kids. Perfectly happy with him at 51 though (30 at a pinch).

In a shallow draft he'd be an excellent rookie option or, if a club were willing to bite, a late pick.

He clearly has some footy nous and is very agile and quick - three traits that translate well to the top level. He does look quite raw (perhaps guilty of doing too much at times, kicking needs work) but with some good coaching I'd be able to get behind a selection like this.
