Averaging 16 deaths per day atm. I guess that's around what we as a society are willing to accept?

It's a very tough time for decision makers. Lots of pain for many families.

It's dumb luck this strain isn't as severe as Delta was otherwise people would be dropping like flies.

Well with vaccination rates in the 90s, helps. With Delta, lots were still only on the first dose.

The majority of hospitalisations and deaths are the unvaxxed.

This seems to confirm it's the case. A bit out of date though

I know for sure it's true in the US where the vaccination rate is lower.

What I heard today on the news from The Health Minister of Qld that data taken on the 500 plus covid patients in Qld hospitals. An unvaccinated person is 9 times more likely to end up in hospital with covid than a person who is tripled vaccinated...including booster of course.

In vaccinated populations it looks as if Omicron is roughly 1/3 as severe as Delta is in vaccinated populations. What I'm saying is, that it's bloody lucky that's the case.

Re: Coronavirus Info & Helpful Direction

We keep hearing about how Omicron is the big game changer, and it is in a lot of ways, but if we were still only dealing with Delta and we took the same let 'er rip approach we'd still be *!*!*!*!ed.

A Danish study found that Omicron is roughly 2.7-3.7 times more infectious than Delta. So, with today's daily cases (~84K) divided by the mid-point of 3.2 we'd be looking at roughly ~26K cases of a variant that is twice as severe in terms of illness.

That scenario represents a complete shit storm in the hospital system that we've been lucky to avoid.
