Best hamburger in Melbourne and beyond

Following on from Eastdog's thread about best the fish and chips in town I have decided to start one on the best hamburgers you have put down.
For mine you can't beat Andrew's in Albert Park, shop has been in the same family for ages and have stuck with a tried and true formula using real bacon, not that stuff that is sometimes passed off for bacon. 2 hands required for the one with the lot.
Out of town, undoubtedly the best burger can be found at Kermonds in Warrnambool, the old style with a bit of everything with the runny egg seeping onto everything else in the bun.
    Agree/Disagree.

I don't mind the Grilled Chain - the hamburgers are ok.

Again I can only speak for brisbane, but best hamburgers for me are right near my work. The joint is called BYOB (build your own burger), so many options, plus everything is real fresh. Also do all the american styles sides eg poppers and covered fries.

Good call, I love Grill'd. Great tasting, great variety and the chips are good too.

Many years ago there was a place in Beaufort (other side of Ballarat) that we always stopped off at on our frequent trips to Adelaide.

What was it called? I take it that it isn't open anymore?

Slightly OT but the Beaufort Bakery makes a decent pie.

I'm travelling to Brisvegas for work on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, where are these awesome Gerhard Bergers (Gerhard's, for short) you speak of? There's a chance I might be a little dusty on the Wednesday after catching up with some friends, so a decent Gerhard is probably exactly what I'll need!

I like Grilled Gerhard's, and recently I had a crack at Andy's in Albert Park which were OK, not as good as I'd hoped but it was at peak time on a Friday night. As far as Grilled is concerned though, their chips are good, but they having nothing on Schnitz chips. They are by far the best.

My most recently awesome Gerhard experience I can recount was about ten minutes out of Tumut, at the foothills of the Threadbo ranges. I can't remember the name of the shop, but it's on the way out of the town heading towards the Hume, and they sell live bait. Truly awesome to the power of sick.
                        TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I doubt it, it was years ago. No idea what it was called, just that it was on the North side of the highway at the Ararat end of town.

Re: Best hamburger in Melbourne and beyond

We are big grill'd fans.. the founder is a mate of a mate, knew him from when he used to work at fosters. Love the chips more than the burgers, which is saying something.

But since the thread title says "beyond", one has to mention that the best burgers in the world are made in New York, if only because there are so many burger joints there. The second best burger in New York is made by Shake Shack, and 45 minute lines at its original location says that quite a few people agree (although there are other branches that arent as packed.. i dont get that about new yorkers, its the same with magnolia bakery, the one made famous by sex and the city.. the soho branch is always packed but the upper west branch is never full, even though the stuff is exactly the same). Burgers in the same class as shake shack is The Spotted Pig, a not-cheap gastropub.. burgers are expensive there so you do expect it to be good, although burgers are the kind of food where the law of diminishing returns is very relevant, so it loses points just for being so freaking expensive.

Anyway, the best burger joint in the world? A dodgy bar in the West Village called the Corner Bistro. It's an institution. The burger is greasy and old school, the waiter is hispanic and has a snake tatt, the meat is burnt on the outside and rare in the middle, and their biggest burger is only $6, which in new york is incredibly cheap. It's not even that great by today's gourmet standards, but when you eat there, you are transported back in time, to when burgers were just good old fashioned food, the West village was a motley collection of brownstones and flats, real bohemians hung out and jived and called each other 'cat' and daddy-o, and dining was a simpler affair.
