I’d always wondered why Ding Dong shut up shop, I’ve had quite a few good nights there. One of the more ridiculous ones being an over 18s Peter Combe gig, completely with Juicy Juicy Green Grass shots
Wake me up when we get to heaven, let me sleep if we're going to hell

Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath

I think it had noise complaints and was struggling anyway but there was a fair bit of press about complaints from staff.
Had a few nights there myself, a hazy memory of a Dirtbombs gig being the highlight

            Re: Pubs and Bars

Cherry Bar owner James Young tapped for Melbourne ‘night mayor’ gig

Melbourne is set to appoint a “night mayor”, but it’s not any sort of challenge to Lord Mayor Sally Capp.

No, the role is part of a Melbourne City Council plan to reinvigorate the inner city’s night-time economy, which has taken a battering due to pandemic shutdowns.

Prominent entertainment industry figure and Cherry Bar owner James Young has been nominated for the gig, with his official title being Chairman of the Night.

But similar posts in the US and Europe are often called night mayor or night tsar.

Mr Young, who will lead a new night-time economic advisory committee, said he was excited and honoured by the prospect.

“Obviously, the Lord Mayor is flat chat, and to be a bit cheeky, looking after potholes and permits and parking, and all these meetings — that’s a full-time job,” he said.

“It makes perfect sense for any forward thinking city in the world to recognise that they need a Lord Mayor and a night mayor.”

“Melbourne’s nightlife is on its knees at the moment, and it’s the perfect time for a night mayor to step into this role with the support of the City of Melbourne.”

If approved at a council meeting on Tuesday, the advisory committee will go ahead with short-listed members including Circus Oz executive director Penny Miles, former White Night Melbourne CEO Andrew Walsh and Epocha and Elyros restaurant owner Angie Giannakodakis.

Ms Capp said Melbourne’s vibrant and diverse night-life was part of the city’s DNA.

“With night-time pedestrian activity still at 50 to 60 per cent lower than pre-COVID-19 levels, we need to pull out all stops to protect and revitalise our night-time economy,” she said.

“Issues to be considered by the committee include city safety and creating diverse night-time offers and activities to reflect Melbourne being a 24-hour city.”

Council’s city activation portfolio lead Roshena Campbell said the municipality’s night-time economy grew by $310.3 million in 2018, contributing $3.5 billion in annual turnover and supporting 31,000 jobs, but the sector had been hit hard.

“The best ideas and solutions will come from strong collaboration between all levels of government, and the industry leaders who run our restaurants, bars, major events, cinemas, performances,” she said.

“They have first-hand knowledge of what is needed to sustain and grow our renowned night-time attractions.”

The committee will also include academic advisers Nicole Kalms, founding director of Monash University’s XYX Lab, and Melbourne University director of Connected Cities Lab Professor Michele Acuto.

Mr Young ran on the Team Capp ticket at last year’s council election, but was not elected.

              MELBOURNE LOSES ANOTHER HOSPITALITY STALWART

Another beloved hospitality venue has fallen victim to Victoria’s hard lockdowns and severe restrictions.

The Victoria Hotel has been an iconic pub in the heart of Yarraville since the 1800s.

“With a heavy heart we will permanently close The Victoria Hotel,” Owner Annette Murdaca-Soto said on a Facebook post on Friday.

“Today entering our fifth lockdown it feels surreal and we feel numb.

“Unfortunately businesses are not like a light switch, turning off and then on again.

“Government support has meant we’ve been able to retain some of our staff members whom have stood by our side, however with no relief on electricity, gas, water, insurances, licensing and rent … we are still so behind.

“Now faced with a large rent increase we will never be able to catch up.”

Ms Murdaca-Soto said that the owners and staff ultimately “feel let down” by the lack of Government support.

“With little to no notice from the government it means losses of thousands of dollars on days that would be our highest trading days.

“We have come back after each lockdown with the ever hopeful optimism that as Melburnians we stand together and we will get through this, however this time we have nothing left to give, mentally and financially,” she said.

The Victoria Hotel will have its final day of trading post lockdown on Sunday August 8.

                Re: Pubs and Bars

Not technically a pub or bar, however I couldn't find another place.
Myself and the better half visited Castlemaine today and fortuitously ended up at Saffs Cafe.
                It's a Bulldog shrine!
All the tables out the back are red white and blue, there's posters around and a signed jumper.
I asked one of the staff about it and she said the owner, her uncle , is a mad bulldog (as was she) and so are most of the family.

Apparently Dustin Martin's mum used to work there.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before or someone from here is involved but either way the food is good and it feels kind of like home.

Castlemaine is a place close to my heart. Have to say there wasn't a lot of Bulldogs supporters to talk to when I lived there.

Did you drive past the Five Flags Hotel in Campbells Creek? I lived there for a couple of years as a youngster.
Being the publicans son I could even work behind the bar when I was 15 or so. Beer only service but I used to get good tips
On a Friday and Saturday night I also used to take take the counter means out to the tables.

By the way, I don't drink alcohol and I mainly attribute that to the lessons learned by observing some of the customers

We also lived near the Faraday school and I went to school with the girls who got kidnapped.
If you get a chance google that. It was huge news at the time.

Mum and dad had a weekender there in Hunter Street and I spent a lot of time there in the '70s. Like it says in the Cosmic Psychos song Down On The Farm "had my gun and a motorbike. Shoot anything I like"
