Bobby Darin - Beyond the Sea always cheers me up. I can't compete with Jeemak and his amazingly esoteric groupe house français, however Entrecote played the French version one night on a special occasion and it always gets me and the better half waltzing around the kitchen.

    Enjoy - La Mer!

Great song. Bobby Darin had a super smooth voice - his version of Mac the Knife although black humour is kinda upbeat. I quite liked the biopic with (ahem) Kev Spacey who can sing quite well.

      How did that happen?

Neil Armstrong is the most famous person I ever met.
Now that’s cool!! Did you chat at all?

hehehe. Yeah don't stop shit posting GG. It's all good fun.
I do tend to bristle at 2D representations of The Beatles being either a 'Pop Band' or 'Psychedelic' or 'hippies'. For me they're way to diverse to be captured by glib and simplistic framing.
I can handle people not liking them - everyone has their own tastes - but I think framing them in simplistic terms isn't fair.
I think one night on the wine I wrote a fairly long and rambling post about them, highlighting a range of songs that showed their broader credentials. Think it might've been in TwoDogs poll of Greatest English Bands..where he criminally refused to list them as an option!

The clip you posted of Paperback Writer in another thread is a great clip. Did you know it was Paul McCartney playing the lead guitar riff on that track?
They also recorded another on the same day in the same location called Rain. They had a habit back then of not including their singles on their albums.... which in hindsight is a bad thing. Revolver (probably my all time favourite Beatles album (it changes based on my mood) would've been even better had they included Paperback Writer and Rain on it. Same with Sgt Pepper, they should've included singles Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane on it.
Revolver & Rubber Soul my fave Beatles albums. Agree they were diverse (& brilliant). I remember reading lyrics of Penny Lane written if I recall correctly on fish & chip wrapping paper. It was under a glass case at one of the British Museums & me just thinking woweee, shivers up my spine stuff.

Given how amazing their catalogue is, it's surprising they didn't take things further. However, I did hear one of their issues or their main issue was Davies struggled with live gigs. Can any of the older farts around here like YHF and TD confirm this?
Now that’s a mullet & a half. Ivor is/was a songwriter who wrote hits for others after Icehouse if I recall correctly.

Every single thing about this is amazing.
Musically, would have been a great time to be in the UK.
There's a Specials doco on sbs 'A message to you'.
Also a series 'This town' which is set in Coventry about the uk ska scene which is pretty good.

Well, I’ve enjoyed the last few hours reading & listening to woofers good mood music. Trips down memory lane often fun. Up to page 32 which I’ll save for another “where did the time go?” session.

A feel good mood song from me is Kraftwrk’s Around The World (& the clip - a Michel Gondry pearler is surely up there too):

Will make my list after I’ve finished reading rest of woofer choices.

This is not a "cool" entry by any stretch, however...

I Want You by Savage Garden was on the radio in a cab today as I was hurtling towards work in Singapore. It immediately took me back to the heady days of grade 6 - getting up early on Saturday & Sunday to catch the top ten on Rage, heading off the tennis comp thereafter (this time was probably the pinnacle of my tennis career - U12's), hanging out with all my mates from the local Catholic primary school, fish and chips every Friday and powering down the hill around the corner from our house in rollerblades every weekend. Good times.

And this is just an absolute piece of 90's pop perfection. I've had it on repeat all day.
Hey DOW, I think it’s cool. So it must be.

Great memories. I too was reached my tennis summit at 12/13yo. And Friday simply wasn’t Friday without fish and chips.

Recently, the local cinema was showing the Talking Heads live concert movie Stop Making Sense. I'd seen it before, but to see it on the big screen was phenomenal. Anyway, this is my favourite performance from it, just an absolute killer performance showcasing unbelievable musicianship and a level of energy that is undeniable. Not lyrically the happiest song, but musically, try not to dance to this MFer.

Hubby saw it back in the day & loved it. Friend he saw it with hated movie & the music. I saw it at imax earlier this year and it is terrific, so much so I went back a week or two later (took my 20+ yo son who liked it heaps) & saw it again. Slippery People is just amazing. You cannot keep still listening to Talking Heads. Remain In Light one of my fave albums. Eno doing his thing again, making other bands even better than they were (which was pretty damn good!!). IMO Talking Heads made afro rhythms & naive lyrics a thing of beauty. The autobiography of Chris Frantz is a good one. Bit of a wild boy. And Byrne was flat out weird. Think Byrne has matured since then. Saw a NY live musical using some of Talking Heads songs with him, thought it was quite good, well worth a watch.

I've been lost down the Beatles rabbit hole for months since this post. They started on guitars, so I was most likely wrong however the fact they play a few instruments may certainly influence their writing.

How good is A Day in the Life.
One of my Beatle faves. I reckon genius lyrics & music with George Martin at his finest too. Not sure it’s a smiley song for me. Loved reading about how they put two tunes together - makes sense when McCartney sings middle bit between Lennon’s start & end bits. Rick Beato’s analysis is worth a watch.

Really enjoyed spending much of today surfing this thread. I’m way more old school & mainstream than most woofers. Here is my list of lifting spirits/smiley songs:

                            Santana - oye Como va:

sergio mendes & brasil 66 - mas que nada:

sergio mendes - aquelas coisas todas:

the cardigans - love fool (love this band):

Beatles - here comes the sun:

                            al jarreau - spain:

                            al jarreau - fly:

al jarreau - better than anything:

joni mitchell - you turn me on I’m a radio:

the 5th dimension - up, up and away (Jimmy Webb’s memoir worth a read, quite a wild one):

Frank Sinatra - you make me feel so young:

Frank Sinatra - I’ve got the world on a string:
                            Josie :)
