But hey those who hate cricket will be thrilled, and many who follow cricket will turn away and find something else. Just like they're doing with AFL.
I don't really give a toss about all the the indignation by some sections of the media. I simply see a captain and VC (and a 3rd player) pre-plan and organise to knowingly cheat, and carry out their plan on the ground. Busted. Gone. Dickheads.

Everything else is white noise, and there's been an over supply of that.

I'm surprised that since you feel so strongly about ball tampering (or cheating if you like) that of the 7 posts you put up about the 2nd test here between Australia and South Africa in 2016, not one mentioned the fact their captain had just been caught red handed ball tampering and had been reported and found guilty by the ICC in a match their bowlers dominated. I would've thought the outrage would've burst forth.

The punishment takes into account the systematic and pre-planned nature of what took place. Daresay that added quite a few months to the penalty.

Faf had a spare Zipper sewn into his pants. That's showing Mens Rea or guilty intent and planning before a test match has even started. While there is sandpaper readily available in cricket dressing rooms, batsmen are always dabbing away at their bats with it, either that or they are replacing perfectly good grips on their handles. Easy enough to pick some up on the day, you don't have to show much foresight. It's not as if they transported the sandpaper to the ground with the intent of scuffing the ball. But it's hard to imagine why Faf needed more than one zipper sewn into his pants. Although he's a big enough wanker for me to easily believe he needs more access than is afforded by the tradional lone zipper

We have to gauge if the charges are valid and if we believe they are serious. In this case Smith confirmed the plot and CA have handed out the punishment. Does it really matter what SA did with Faf?
It's important because it sets a precedent. If the Saffers want to keep carrying on about extra punishment then they can start with their twice caught captain. There's a certain tone of hubris, bluster and hypocrisy too and I can't stand a hypocrite.

This notion that we should hold ourselves to a higher standard is absurd jingoistic hubris. How far should we take this virtue we apparently carry? Not bowl short to anyone batting below 7 so as not to appear too threatening to others? Perhaps only use bats from the 80's because the modern ones are unfair? Maybe limit the number of support staff we have in case it gives us an advantage over poorer countries?
        Precisely.

Shocked that Smith will miss 12 months, very harsh considering this is not as bad as drug cheating, where Shane Warne got 12 months.

              Interesting article in the Washington Post (must be syndicated) about the recent history of ball tampering;

But after all is said and done the question that really sticks with me is how the *!*!*!*! the players thought they were going to get away with it? On a cricket field in South Africa during a test match? The sheer arrogance of thinking nobody will notice or even that nobody is watching you like a hawk just looking for anything a bit untoward that doesn't seem right. The match referee for a start. And tge media. It was just so ham fisted.

Because he was looking a bit pudgy on TV?

When that guy shot the lawyer in the city and the cops found out he was involved with some bikie gang they reached out to the gang and asked them to hand him over "you can have him after he's recovered" "recovered from what?" "From having his gang tattoos removed"

Re: 2018 Tour of South Africa

I can't help but feel that even though the punishment seems heavy handed, it was done because of our continued insistence we play the game fairly, have been caught out not doing so, and are now trying to set a standard to which all other cheating nations need to now adhere to if they get caught doing the same.

It's the only way we can recover the position as the standard bearer we have attempted to project ourselves as. It will be interesting to see how we respond to other nations being caught ball tampering, which they inevitably will.

Was Warne banned for drug cheating or taking a product that was banned?

I just checked and this is a part of an article

All the medical evidence points to the fact that a diuretic would not be performance-enhancing for a cricketer. If anything, it may have a contrary effect. The reason and the only reason why it is a banned substance for a cricketer is that it is a masking agent.

Case closed.....his mum only gave it to him so he could be a bit better looking and root more chicks on the sly.*

12 months ban form all forms of cricket is OTT.

They should be allowed to continue to play Shield cricket at a minimum and Big Bash. The irony is that Smith may now seek a County contract which will see him spend a Summer in England honing his game ahead of the Ashes next year.......

I hope they seek an independent review

I think it's short odds that they will challenge this, I don't for one minute believe a ban for a test or two is sufficient but I agree that 12 months in all forms of the game is too far. I don't think Shield cricket should be in the mix.
