The merch isn't being sold in countries containing people who actually give a shit about tradition. Yes it not being bought will hurt the club however, the majority of merch is being bought in Asia. Having lived in Vietnam and played nine a side with the locals in competition and casually, the very last thing on the minds of the folks I played with was collective evenness of the competitions the big clubs participate within and the home fans......and pretty much everyone wore a Barca, MU/ MC or Chelsea kit. These folks will continue to buy merch because to them, following these teams and being able to buy actual merch is a sign of prestige and wealth. Even buying knock off merch and being affiliated with these clubs is a fashion statement for guys who play nine a side (which is actually really humbling when you think about it).

Freddie's right, this issue is existential and bigger than than anglo-saxon merch buying patterns and ideologies around tradition. This is a grab for the new world, one in which the aforementioned that used to be most prominent are secondary considerations.

There are always exceptions, but there is nothing more frustrating than watching a shite team park the bus. For 75% of the Premier League clubs the highlight of the season is when they play one of the top 6 - they are the "premium" games in the calendar.

Will it work? I have my doubts, but is it any worse than having Barca/Real/Athletic win the Spanish League each year? Inter/AC/Juve win Seria A? One of the 6 win the Prmier Leage? Rangers or Celtic win the Scottish league? Now that is boring! Its why AFL is so great - the teams are all so close that every year there are 3 or 4 teams that push their way up the ladder. Every year there are 3 or 4 teams that slip down the ladder. Key though is that the teams falling down know they can rebuild without the fear of dropping out of the competition all together
Yeah I see what you mean but in the same sense the meek challenging the opposite of meek....I suppose the strong, is actually a good thing.

Take the money out of it, and think about the "what if" opportunity that exists in the six premium games multiplied by how many each round that doesn't exist when you have a bunch of fat cat teams playing each other week in week out. Think about the danger to reputation that doesn't exist when you're playing teams that are equally matched to you week in week out.

If you want my real opinion, it's football will always be shit unless more equalisation is brought into the fold. But that won't ever happen because the game is culturally opposed to it.

Re: Break away European Super League.

I actually don't mind games where there's strategy and one team brings a defensive mindset.Rafa did it with us and it was some of the most enjoyable stuff I've seen.
An elite manager working his magic with a group of lesser lights.
Your point about the same teams winning each year is valid for sure, but of late at least in the PL there has been exceptions to the rule. Personally I would like to see a salary cap so the talent is spread more evenly but it will never happen; they'd all end up in China although that's faltering.
For me the question is would you want to lose Leicester's amazing story, Wolves being so competitive last year, West Ham this season for eg?

I'd rather watch any of those mentioned over Arsenal even though I love their kids (Saka, Smith-Rowe). Willock has been great for the Toon.
Lets face it apart from Liverpool and Man City (mainly the latter) no team has truly dominated the league consistently for a fair while.

Surely also in the ESL if there are dead rubber games, with no chance of not qualifying that would be the ultimate bore.

Nothing's as exciting as watching Newcastle scrap and scrape their way out of the relegation zone! Play a 10-0-0 I don't care just don't lose!

Surely the point of being richer than god and having a player list worth £500 million is having the ability to breakdown West Bromwich Albion and score a couple of goals over 90 minutes.

As much as I **** on the AFL and complain about all the marquee matches the big clubs get, its 1000x better than what global soccer has become.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

They should still take points off them. The cheek of boards to make poor decisions and then reconsider once they eventually worked out their fans objected. There should be a tax on their arrogance.

As a result of listening to you and the wider football community over recent days we are withdrawing from the proposed Super League.

We made a mistake, and we apologise for it.
