Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup
It's the World Cup peeps. Let's just enjoy the tournament.
No country on Earth has a mortgage on virtuosity and piousness (except maybe Bhutan). What we find gross about some of the cultural aspects of the host nation, I'm sure they find aspects of our culture just as gross."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

The game - wow Asia. Not sure there should be so many spots for them if they keep this up. How can Italy and Norway for eg not qualify.
England looked super organised. Good defence (but...Pickford) that have played together for a while Shaw, Macguire, Stones, Trippier and some real talent up front. Saka is a star, Sterling been out of form but damaging and Bellingham dropping in looks nice too.
They're a settled side and could give it a real shake.
Haven't caught the other two games yet, know the results but will try and watch throughout the day.BT COME BACK!

A voice of reason.

Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup
To be fair, I think it’s at the point now where FIFA have overtaken Qatar as the point of hatred. I will be watching and enjoying the games, but this tournament location was a mistake when it was announced and remains so, for reasons over and above the human rights related ones.Last edited by Sedat; 22-11-2022, 11:57 AM."Look at me mate. Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup
No event/thing exists in a vacuum, and the world cup being one of the biggest international events there is is just about the least able to hide behind that thin veil of an excuse for shit morals and clearly political decisions.
Qatar is shit, on a number of fronts, and do not deserve to be rewarded with an event such as this.
Qatar will be quickly forgotten as soon as the World Cup ends, even though said cultural and behavioural issues will remain in force and full effect. It's the current cause du jour and the travelling circus will be outraged at something else soon enough, without ever having the courage of their convictions or any skin in the game to actually do something about the issues they claim to care so passionately about - such is the way in the hashtag era.
Much like the AFL any time heat is actually applied to them FIFA have been exposed as world leaders only when it suits them, and are in reality a bunch of profit driven and selfish arseholes.
Things like the Socceroos campaign are pushing for some kind of change that leaves a legacy better than just rewarding Qatar and FIFA for shit behaviour. I don't see how we can leave the politics out of sport when the two are inherently intertwined and regardless that would be a the shit thing to do.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

Nah I reckon thats bullshit.

So when do they get called out for it? If not when there is literally a worldwide event bringing these things to our attention then when? It's estimated that maybe 6,500 migrant workers have died in the construction of stadiums for this tournament. And the world should just not mention this because "Qatar have always been like this" and that the world is gonna lose interest soon anyway?

This is why IMO engaging in political discourse is so utterly futile and self-defeating - each to their own but life is too short to be consumed by this constantly negative mindset. It actually demeans real victims of human rights abuses when issues are 'highlighted' (but with no real action or consequence) and are just as quickly forgotten when the circus rolls on.
I love the world cup and I will enjoy this tournament as much as every previous one in my lifetime. Others are most welcome to switch off and not engage in this tournament.Last edited by Sedat; 22-11-2022, 01:31 PM."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup
Luckily for Asia, I think the world cup is moving to 48 nations next time around. Agree it was a dreadful performance by Iran last night - they were non-competitive and so passive with their set-up. Just invited the pressure and they received it in spades. I was an excellent all-round performance by England."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup
Do we hear people screaming about the US invading countries, torturing prisoners etc etc whilst they're watching their NBA and NFL?
The UK arming nations for profit whilst innocents cop the blunt end of that particular transaction on many occasions? Hey I love the Premier League.
Is there a culturist/racist element to this? Seems Arab nations really do cop more than others.
Too much to unpack. I'm with Sedat, I'm just going to enjoy the tournament and leave the outrage to those with more energy.BT COME BACK!

Re: 2022 FIFA World Cup
I agree but why do people tend to pick and choose when they'll be outraged? It's too exhausting to be constantly outraged (although some on social media give it a fair crack) and no one is has a perfect record on human rights.
