Games have been cancelled due to cost estimates blowing out.

Original budget of $2billion odd, will still be spent in permanent infrastructure, housing and tourism for Country Victoria.

I guess Ballarat ground will still get expansion.

I’d argue stupidity to take it on when literally no other commonwealth province in the entire commonwealth wanted it. But we’ve got to the right decision.

Given the prolonged inability to land projects at anywhere near the estimates you can understand why they just can't proceed.
The interest payments alone are substantial.

I’d argue stupidity to take it on when literally no other commonwealth province in the entire commonwealth wanted it. But we’ve got to the right decision.

People always look at costs and forget about benefits, but it gets to a stage where costs exceed benefits.

I looked at both. It made no sense then on a macro level. You can improve the regions without hosting a third rate comp that literally nobody else wanted to host. But again, thank god the pin was pulled. We all move on.

I don't think that's true. Everyone wants the benefits and most don't think about who pays for it but it's become clear that governments can't cost things correctly and there are looming debt payments heading back to everyone.

Countries lose out hosting the Olympics and World Cup (unless you're trying to whitewash a bad reputation or something intangible like that). Of course it's not worth hosting the Commonwealth Games.

Surely it would have been much cheaper to host if it was just held in Melbourne in existing venues? Could have housed the athletes in that unused quarantine centre!
