Today, I find there to be a complete lack of talent or basic competence on all sides of the aisle (those in charge and especially those in opposition). And ultimately that benefits nobody.

I gotta say, I'm not a comm games fan at all. Didn't go to any of the GC games even though it was relatively close to home. Went to 3 WWC matches though. Much more interesting.
Footscray Harrier's Noel Freeman won the Gold in the 1970 C'wealth Games 20 km walk. The value of the Commonwealth is international, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland (the occupied north east), Canada, Aus, NZ, India, Pakistan, South Africa from cricket but Jamaica, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Togo, the Falklands and the other of 33 UN designated small nations marching. 'scuse me, reaching for the tissue box.

We are in heated agreement, Sedat.

Apparently $380m a few days ago is now $600m - no doubt there will be an announcement late on a Friday arvo before the next long weekend saying "oops, it's actually $2bn". Victoria is a clown show.

Is it really 600m? We are very generous with our money.

                    Re: Commonwealth Games

I thought Victoria dropped the ball with the Commonwealth Games. Brisbane, hold my beer.

Paris 2024 and then LA 2028. They are going to wow the world. Put on events for the ages just like Sydney too. It made the entire country grow. What an unbelivable two weeks it was for Australia.

Then we go to Brisbane 2032. We are going to embarass ourselves. Opening Ceromony at Suncorp? This is a disgrace. Such a lack of long term vision and leadership.

We used to be a country of ambition. A country that wanted to do great things. A country that wanted to be a serious player on the world stage. A country that could and would deliver world class events.

We have lost the plot. The agenda has been hijacked by cowards. Just cancel the games. Seriously.

Ambition has to be backed by ability and I would imagine a lot of Governments are gun shy about signing up for major developments given there has been so many substantial misses in recent years.

                          Yes. It is a challenge.

If you do these things the right way, you can make them work. You can create legacy and create long term value. You need foresight, vision and courage. You need leadership which is missing at all levels of politics in this country. On both sides of the political spectrum.

Yes. Agree. We need courage and leadership. Sydney delieved in spades for Australia. We felt so grown up on the world stage. It was an event for the ages that impacted how many people? It is now 24 years ago and I remember the feeling and the key moments like yesterday.

Weak leadership, chases short term results over creating long term greatness.

I have full respect and admiration for the successive leaders who have ensured that the Whitten Oval was redeveloped. They had ambition and vision and courage in spades. What an amazing facility we now have. In the current environment I believe it would be a lot more difficult.

Once again I admire the ambition and appreciate all the effort that goes into it but it was poorly done and we paid a price on the field last year for it. I guess we learn a lot along the way.
