Ashes 5th Test: Thursday July 27-Monday 31, The Oval

Would love to win this one and therefore the series.

Green should be dropped and Nesser should be considered. Does Murphy come in if that is the case.

    In: Murphy, Nesser
    Out: Starc (rested), Green

I’d say something about Warner but will save my time.

Why would there be a question mark on Marsh for this test? The last one effectively finished a day early and it's not like he bowled a bunch of overs.
He's taking a huge risk of Green pushing him back down the order again if he doesn't play.

        Reported this morning:

Michael Neser in frame for The Oval amid injury clouds over Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc.

Mitch Marsh has had a body made of tissue paper over the journey - not surprised to hear he's carrying a niggle. If Marsh isn't right to bowl, I'd go with Green back to 6, and Murphy and Neser in for Starc and Marsh. In saying that, Marsh deserves first crack at the number 6 spot for our home summer, unless Green can make himself undroppable at the Oval. Immense series from Marsh whether he plays at the Oval or not - his runs are worth double considering when he's got them.

It's frustrating that Warner outlined his retirement 'wish-list', because I think this would otherwise be a good chance for him to finish up after the Oval and save some face from being dropped. He's done a manful, if incomplete, job as an opener through the series but it's clearly time to start fresh come our home summer.

In the whites, we're hosting a dangerous Pakistan and a rabble of a Windies side at home. The first Test isn't until mid-December, by which point more than half the Shield season will have been played. We could have a genuinely exciting bat off between Harris, Bancroft and Pucovski to partner Khawaja.

I think there's also pressure on Carey to get amongst the runs. He's been outstanding with the gloves, but he averaged 9 with the bat in India and is averaging 23 in this series. When you have a player as good as Inglis ready to go, I think Carey needs to be doing more than what he is.

Pakistan are dangerous on paper only. They have been utterly hopeless in Australia since Sarfraz brought the bottle-tops out at the MCG in 1979, even with some absolute champions in their team throughout that long period. They've never been able to lay a glove on Australian soil in tests for over 40 years.

The Windies are an embarrassment. They were my childhood sporting heroes and didn't lose a test series anywhere for 15 years from 1980 to 1995 - that record will never be broken. It is very sad to see them so completely inept (and have been for basically 25 years). There is no coming back for them.

Looks like some decisions to be made

Australian captain Pat Cummins claims he is right to play his sixth Test in eight weeks despite concerns about his most recent performance, and declared that spearhead Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh had overcome fitness concerns ahead of the final Ashes Test at the Oval.

                LIKELY TEAMS

AUSTRALIA: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (capt), Todd Murphy, Michael Neser/Josh Hazlewood

ENGLAND: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Josh Tongue/Chris Woakes (injury cloud)

Looks like Starc and Marsh will play and just a question mark on if it's Hazlewood or Neser.

England are going unchanged for the final test - I'm surprised as I thought Tongue deserved another test.

My gut is that we'll go with Neser over Hazlewood, which I think would be the right move. I feel England are right on top of our bowling attack and a new face will at least give them a different look.

If we want to win this we should try bowling to get them out rather than trying to defend their scoring.

Trying defend has absolutely nor worked. Lets try and get wickets.

Overcast here in London and rain around. Likely good bowling conditions

So it's supposed to be Murphy in for Green (Managed)

Has a team ever won the toss 5 times in a row?
