Maybe I was wrong when this team falls from grace. That might just be here already. Kudos to Warner for getting out on top. Smith should’ve joined him.

But he didn't.

He was allowed to hang for far too long when we really should've tapped him on the shoulder before last summer's test matches and given a younger opener the opportunity to start their career against inferior opposition.

The fact we tried Smith as an opener post Warner has led us to the position, we're in.

The whole team is a shambolic mess, but CA have their collective heads in the sand as seen with McDonald's contract extension.

More tongue in cheek about Warner leaving before the team performances collapsed. I think as soon as Warner declared the last summer was his last after the Ashes put him and CA on a collision course and CA didn’t have it them to go him (again). I don’t get McDonald either, I reckon he could go down as one of our worst coaches by the time he’s done. CA following the AFEL lead in following dollars I reckon. Which for them won’t work if we are getting belted and tests don’t last 3-3.5 days. AFEL games don’t get called off at half time in blow outs. Which makes you wonder what the actual plan is. One dayers are basically dead. Tests might soon be unwatchable and is T20 really going to be enough for the public the keep interest and revenue up?

I wonder with the lack of test cricketers coming through whether this is just cyclical or whether there’s a foundational shift in player development the points to what the future looks like?

We don't possess the ability to fight it out now. It's sort of all or nothing. Previously we used to have a couple of batsman who would put a premium value on their wicket. If we capitulate early tomorrow I wonder how the coach and captain explain it.

I don't think they can. If we capitulate it will simply have to be about finding the answers internally and ensuring that we find some heart in Adelaide. We can't come up with excuses from here Pat and Andrew will have to cop it sweet.

This is an annihilation and my fear is this is not an aberration.

Australia's elite bowling line-up has hidden a few batting sins the last 2-3 years. It's actually very reminiscent of Ambrose and Walsh in the mid/late 90's slowing down the inevitable West Indies demise when they had genuinely rubbish batting line-ups for most of that decade (with the exception of Lara). The Windies slide really started in 1992 after Richards and Greenidge retired (and then Richardson in 1995), and credit to Ambrose and Walsh (and Bishop when he wasn't injured) for keeping them super-competitive until the late 90's. Then it predictably all turned to shit when these 2 retired.

Bumrah is right up with the best of the pace bowlers I have seen including those WI stars.

Batters need to be on top of their game to handle him unfortunately we carry a few batters.

While I agree, the only knock on him at the moment, and I'm clutching at straws, is that he hasn't had a 10 for in a test match.
Mind you I don't hold that against Joel Garner.

Has any sport fallen more from the publics consicousness than cricket?

When I was growing up, summer = cricket and cricket = summer. Summer was cricket. That is all anyone talked about or watched. This Test Match has started and played in our prime time window and has not get anywhere near the coverage or people talking about it compared to many summers ago.

Maybe I am living in a different bubble. But I don't recall a sport losing its broad appeal any faster than Cricket in Australia.

When I was growing up, summer = cricket and cricket = summer. Summer was cricket. That is all anyone talked about or watched. This Test Match has started and played in our prime time window and has not get anywhere near the coverage or people talking about it compared to many summers ago.

Maybe I am living in a different bubble. But I don't recall a sport losing its broad appeal any faster than Cricket in Australia.

Because Australia is losing . People jump off the wagon pretty quick when it’s a shambles.

Totally outclassed by a more determined Indian side.

The signs have been becoming evident over the last few years and having some series going our way has made things a bit easier for the selectors to stick with the core players regardless of signs of declining form and at times poor application.
It remains to be seen if we can turn this around but eventually bills become due when selectors don't take on the challenges in front of them.
Unless the likes of Labuschagne and Smith can roll back their form challenges it's very likely we will struggle through the series.

Cummins' shock claim after heavy defeat


Pat Cummins has addressed Australia’s one-sided 295-run capitulation in the first Test.

The Aussie skipper said consistently in the build-up to the first Test the preparation had been ideal and he repeated that mantra, despite the heavy loss.

“Fairly disappointing. We thought our prep leading in was very good,” he said on Fox Cricket.

“Everyone was firing and it was one of those games where not much went right.

“A fair bit to look at ahead of next week.”

There is now a 10-day break before the second Test gets underway in Adelaide and Cummins said the team will take a brief break.

“After a loss you want to get back on the horse pretty quickly,” he said.

“But we’ll take a couple of days of rest and get into Adelaide and have a good prep for that Test.”

Cummins was asked about the top order, which performed dismally in Perth and is under real pressure to perform in the second Test.

“Look there’s a lot of experience there,” Cummins said. “This summer, it’s a sample size of one.

“I think they’re going about their work really well, but no doubt we’ve got some work to do.

“There’ll be plenty of time in the nets, conversations around if we come up against a similar attack, what we could’ve done a bit better.”

Afterwards, Adam Gilchrist summed it up when he stated: “Australia can lose at home, but not be dominated in such commanding fashion.”

Really hard to see how our batsman will handle them on an even more difficult track but it just takes two of them to get going.

Rugby Union post the Jonny Wilkinson 2003 world cup was a pretty rapid drop, but certainly never loved to the level of cricket.
