    Re: Ricky Ponting

A few personal thoughts of mine:
Why is Hayden getting a game?
Ponting is a great cricketer but cant captain, i have always thought this after the ashes loss, the only reason that was lost was because he for some reason refuses to have a third man.

He was carried by stars of the game, now they have gone his bad captaincy is now showing.
Why yesterday did he not have the field in and put pressure on the batsman, they were taking singles at ease.

He still refuses to have a third man, Tendulker took advantage of it in India.
Also in India he mouthed off before the series about taking fast bowlers and scareing them out, seriously wouldnt you think India knows their own conditions, its pretty basic stuff that you look at who your playing when playing away and follow their lead a little in picking a team as far as bowlers are concerned?

The same can be said in England, its seamers that take wickets, not necessarily super quick.
In his defence i would like to blame the Australian cricket academy too, why havent they been grooming a spinner over the last 5 years and why isnt the best spin bowler ever thrown a bag of money to teach at the Academy?

I think Symonds getting a game is a joke and must be causing some sort of friction.
Ponting is suffering from The Australian cricket boards laziness as far as bringing on some players and also the retirement of great players but i also think he is looking after a couple of mates that no longer are good enough.
As far as another captain? Hussey for mine.

If I may play Devil's Advocate here, in my experience being the best in your field does not necessarily make you the best teacher in that field. Look at Terry Jenner. Hardly up there with the greatest bowlers of all time yet he made Shane Warne into the bowler that he is.

Being the greatest leg-spinner in the world will not automatically make him a great coach/teacher.

The amazing thing is that he had captained pretty well up to yesterday for that test. I couldn't understand Symonds not getting a go in the 2nd innings.

If you are looking for a candidate to take over the captaincy then look no further than Simon Katich. He has the right cricketing brain and temperament for the job.

He would be an excellent choice.
The thing is does Ponting really needs to be changed? I reckon he would retire before handing over the spot.

I hope not. I think I would give watching Test cricket away of we get a bunch on Clarke types in the side.

Again, playing Devil's advocate, there was a past test captain considered ahead of his time in many ways, open neck shirt, extravagant wicket celebration, flogging products on TV and setting up a TV career very early on. You might remember him, Richie something?

I can handle one or two but if EJ Smith is right and we are going to have a team full of them, then I won't be watching. Trendy I can cope with with but a bunch of self preening peacocks I won't be bothered with.

I think he does. In fact I reckon it's vital for the future of Australian cricket that someone else captains the side.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I get your point, but I would still think Warnie would have something to offer.
In actual fact the point i was making is why havent the Brd been grooming one?

I dont think you can just develop a cricketer like Warnie. If Shane Warne isnt the greatest cricketer ever, then he's bloody close to it.

True but you would have thought we could have developed a spinner of test standard by now, not using blokes over 30.
I am not suggesting another Warne, just an up and coming spinner.

The issue with the spinners is unfortunate. They had MacGill penciled in and McGain as the back-up but a retirement and an injury really impacted the balance and exposed the other guys. They probably thought they wouldn't have needed a replacement until after the SA series was completed.

GVGjr even those 2 spinners are in the 30s, I would have thought the series against NZ would have been perfect to bring in a younger spinner, thus giving him some sort of experience so they werent pulling one out of the blue for the ashes tour.
Actually they should have taken a young one to India, great place to learn.
Problem is we arent bringing in younger players as the older ones get close to retirement, its like we are filling in gaps with old players just to get through the year, and after that whats the plan?
