    Re: Ashes - Second Test

    All over!

1st time in 24 years the Poms have beaten Australia by an innings.

Clearly deserved their win, totally outplayed us.

What's with all the love for Hughes?

Hardly belting down the door with runs.

If the selectors are fair dinkum about winning this thing Cam White (the only Australian still other than Hussey and Haddin to have a century against the poms this summer) and Hodgey (brave call)/D. Huss (will make more runs than North in his sleep)/Khawaja (with an eye to the future) come in. Anyone else and it's just a joke. Even Ferguson -- he's too far back compared to Khawaja.

I would rather Khawaja come in and open, but can't see it happening. Hughes will be the next cab off the rank for openers(didn't he makes some runs against England in the second innings down in Hobart?).
          The curse is dead.

Watson's selection as an opener is proving that it's not really seen (at least by our selectors) as a specialist position anymore -- nor should it be. Any first-class/state no.3 should be good enough to adapt to opening the batting these days (Bradman notwithstanding). M.Hussey is in form and opened for 99% of his first-class career -- just move him up the order. I mean, we have a career all-rounder opening, and a career opening batsman playing at no.5. What the heck is going on?

I won't go into the differences between ODIs and the longer-form of the game (I'm sure Sockeye will do that!). Until he has exposed form at Shield level, he has no exposed form.

In any case, the selectors use this to dodge and weave in making up justifications anyway -- this morning Greg Shipperd (who is Victoria's coach these days) was on SEN and he said that the selectors' reasons for not selecting White, McDonald, D.Hussey etc. were that they were seen predominantly as ODI and 20/20 players. They can't then turn around and say that exposed form in the shorter forms of the game are adequate yardsticks for Test selection.

Unless it's one rule for Victorian players, and another rule for other players.

If they really wanted to rebuild they should have been dinkum about it four years ago instead of sticking fat with guys like North and Hussey. Since they haven't, it's too late to start blooding youngsters in the cauldron of a losing Ashes series. At least Hodgey and White and the like have excelled in plenty of pressure situations and are more likely to stand up under the spotlight than a raw kid. All we need for the next three Tests are guys who will perform better than Marcus North in the short term.
I was referring to our next series .
These changes should have been made 12 months ago, possibly longer after the 09 Ashes loss!Hodge has retired from first class cricket and White hasn't excelled when given his chance.I'd have Ferguson or Kwahja in ahead of White.

Marsh will come in for Katich
Khawaja will come in for North

They will go back to Hauritz if they want a spinner but I don't think they will.

The bowling combination is anyone's guess which makes me think they will give the 3 incumbents another chance and perhaps Cameron from NSW as the 4th bowler

Someone should have asked Shipperd why he didn't play young Keith in the recent shield game.

Doherty was catapulted to the test team on the back of one decent performance in a meaningless ODI. He averages 47 in domestic first-class cricket FFS. Ponting has far too much influence in the make-up of the national team - he is the sole reason Hodge has not enjoyed a successful 5 year/60 test career and the Australian team is all the poorer because of it. Doherty was Punter's call as well.

I don't think Sockeye is advocating those changes -- just what he thinks the selectors will do.

Right, SS? What do YOU think the selectors should do?

I think my preferred team would be at fairly long odds to be the actual team.

For starters White would be my captain and Clarke would be dropped under the new 'no-wankers' rule.
