I think a quick trip down any Callan Ward thread might say otherwise.

I think it's because ultimately we all know that the club blew it and left trying to retain him too late in the year.

He served the club well by resting his head on Cordy's knee in 2016 that's what I call taking one for the team.

Said it before and I’ll say it again. My closest cousins went to school with him and were close to him. Cal told them he intended on staying. Then he told them we absolutely low balled him with an offensive offer. While we were trying to screw him into a low priced extension the club was apparently surprised GWS made him a great offer and the rest is history. We couldn’t have ****ed it up more if we tried. He loved the club and wanted to stay and would’ve stayed if we didn’t burn him.

Imagine offering Marra $400,000 a year to extend beyond this year. Then being surprised when he wanted out.

What’s worse is he’s playing better footy than Macrae.

I booed him when he played for us. Pretty sure it was our last game at Marvel/Etihad/Telstra, what ever it was called at the time. I've moved on since then.

Nice story to make you feel ok about taking the big bucks.
No one could compete with the GWS cash in those days.
I don't doubt your story i just doubt he would ever knock back a godfather deal. Surely hes not stupid.

I'll go with Phil Smyth giving Tom Brady an autographed jersey.
There's not enough Phil Smyth content in pop culture. Or any type of culture.

Everyting BT says is correct. That overlaid with his Dad being a Sheedy creep, plus Cal's insatiable lust for a second house (he might even be the OG second house advocate) meant it was a disaster waiting to happen.

I was told at the time, before GWS came for him, he would have stayed with a good offer and was telling those around him of this.

We did sack those involved in low balling him too. Make of it what you will.

It's an interesting angle. It was known for a very long time that GWS were coming, and they had a war-chest.

So if his agent wasn't all over this then I hope he sacked them

Thanks for the info BT, it sounds like if we had of come close to the offer maybe he would have stayed. For mine, if we did that it would have completely disenfranchised the other players and caused more problems than it was worth.
