Having said that, it's another I wouldn't want us wasting time on given he's contracted and his worth to Essendon. It would cost two first rounders, and we just have too many other needs - plus we need to keep our powder dry if we're in the race for Butters.

Shame though, because he would be brilliant alongside Bont.
Can't resist whining about the fact that Essendon got Merrett for the pick we traded to them for Crameri. Oh well......

This is the right time for us to let Liam Jones move on, a little like it was the right time to finish up Grant and West when we did in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Everything going great Jones could play a role next year, but we have to keep moving forward with who we have as alternatives and leave space for others.

No thanks to Merrett. He's a fantastic player and a proven fighter, but he'll cost too much. Sanders, JF and Butters will be sufficient coverage for Treloar and Liberatore post 2026.

As for Wilkie, let's just see if the Saints have the cash to come to the table and remunerate him to the extent he feels he should be as the trade period wraps up. We'll be waiting if not, and if so, all of the Saints chips will be exhausted and they'll have overspent this trade period with no harm or foul to us.

On AFL 360, Scott said no way they will let Merret or Ridley go. They are both contarcted, but we have heard that before. Ridley just signed another 4 years and Merret has two more years.

Is Butters 1 meant to be Merrett?

Dont know how anyone can say no to Butters top 5 player in the comp and only 24 I still think he should be priority number 1. Sanders will goto Tassie and Treloar and Libba most likely 1-2 years left max.
I think the defence issue more comes down to structure and system more than personnel. if we can get a Wilkie or Butts perfect but wouldn’t prioritise that over a Butters.

We are so blessed, if we get Butters and Sanders leaves, our starting midfield in 3-4 years time would be:
                        Butters, Richards, Freijah

and Bont still probably being a top 5 player in the comp haha

He can't be captain for them next season can he?
I can see why players want to leave given has changed course and are in a rebuild phase which is not what they told the likes of Merrett and Ridley

Yes if he stays, he needs to step down as captain

Every player linked to a new club ahead of the AFL trade period

There were 31 players who swapped clubs during football’s last silly season and as the trade period closes in again, these are all the names to watch at your club.

Last year 31 players found a new home in the weeks after the season ended – 21 in trades and 10 as free agents.

All season names have been on whiteboards as targets before the silly season kicks off and more and more of those names are now out in the open.

Every club will be working on plans to get better and to get the best value for their assets as the trade period closes in.

With names like Charlie Curnow, Christian Petracca, Zach Merrett and Zac Bailey on the board, these are the names to keep track of at every club before the trade period officially begins on October 6.

                                ADELAIDE

The Crows were busy last off-season and again could be this year. Who is going to be the player that can take Matthew Nicks’ side to the next level? They have been looking to improve their ruck stocks, while more midfield depth and quality could also be high on the list.
                                • Who they have been linked to:
Callum Ah Chee (Brisbane), Sam Draper (Essendon), Zac Bailey (Brisbane)
                                • Who rivals are circling:
                                  Lachie Sholl, Jordon Butts
                                • Retired:
                                  Matt Crouch (ret)
                                BRISBANE

Oscar Allen will bolster Brisbane’s forward line next season and the Lions are in the box seat to also sign Sam Draper, who told Essendon this week he wants out. Lockdown defender Brandon Starcevich remains on the fence about a return to WA and Callum Ah
Chee has an offer on the table from Adelaide that he will weigh up. The Lions remain in the fight for Sam Draper.
                                • Who they have been linked to:
Sam Draper (Essendon), Jordan Ridley (Essendon), Jamie Elliott (Collingwood), Connor Budarick (Gold Coast)
                                • Free agent incoming:
                                  Oscar Allen (West Coast)
                                • Who rivals are circling:
Brandon Starcevich, Callum Ah Chee, Zac Bailey
                                • Retired and delisted:
                                  Nil
                                CARLTON

Get set for weeks of chatter about Charlie Curnow. While Carlton says he is not being traded, until the bell rings to end the trade period, his name will continue to come up. Once again, the Blues are searching for more speed and ball use. The Blues have won a trade request from Eagle Campbell Chesser and told Elijah Hollands to search for a new home.
                                • Who have they been linked to:
Campbell Chesser (West Coast), Buku Khamis (Western Bulldogs), Malcolm Rosas Jr (Gold Coast), Jack Petruccelle (West Coast, delisted), Liam Reidy (Fremantle), Ned Reeves (Hawthorn), Sam Flanders (Gold Coast)
                                • Who rivals are circling:
Charlie Curnow, Mitch McGovern, Elijah Hollands
                                • Free agent watch:
Tom De Koning (St Kilda), Jack Silvagni (St Kilda)
                                • Retired and delisted:
Alex Cincotta, Orazio Fantasia, Harry Lemmey (del), Sam Docherty (ret)
                                COLLINGWOOD

Keep an eye on the Pies. They were buyers last year with Dan Houston and Harry Perryman and have been linked to names like Matt Rowell and Jack Silvagni this year but missed out. Collingwood will be aggressive but have been suspiciously quiet so far.
                                • Who have they been linked to:
                                  Jack Buller (Sydney)
                                • Who rivals are circling:
Jamie Elliott, Brody Mihocek, Mason Cox, Bobby Hill
                                • Retired:
                                  Will Hoskin-Elliott
                                ESSENDON

The Bombers have so far been steadfast they will not trade Zach Merrett or Jordan Ridley, but a serious push from Merrett would drop a bomb on the trade period. Essendon remains committed to its steady build so wont go crazy on splashing cash, but have a lot of holes to fill.
                                • Who they have been linked to:
Brandon Starcevich (Brisbane Lions), Zane Duursma (North Melbourne), Zac Bailey (Brisbane Lions)
                                • Who rivals are circling:
Zach Merrett, Jordan Ridley, Jayden Laverde, Elijah Tsatas
                                • Free agent outgoing:
                                  Sam Draper (Adelaide/Brisbane Lions)
                                • Delisted:
Alwyn Davey Jnr, Jye Menzie, Dylan Shiel
                                FREMANTLE

He categorically denied earlier this year that he was considering a move back to Melbourne but you’d expect the Demons will still ask the question of Luke Jackson. Re-signing in-demand midfielder Neil Erasmus is a big tick for the Dockers but they’re still desperately craving some class at halfback, a role Judd McVee could fill.
                                • Who they have been linked to:
Judd McVee (Melbourne), Jai Serong (Hawthorn)
                                • Who rivals are circling:
Liam Reidy, Luke Jackson, Sean Darcy, Will Brodie
                                • Retired and delisted:
Nat Fyfe, Quinton Narkle, Michael Walters (ret), Odin Jones, Jack Delean
                                GEELONG

Every off-season the Cats quietly circle like sharks looking for a star upgrade. Once again they have the room to hunt a star and always have the appetite. Will there be another Bailey Smith during this trade period? Hawk James Worpel appears certain to head down the highway.
                                • Who they have been linked to:
James Worpel (Hawthorn), Rowan Marshall (St Kilda), Charlie Curnow (Carlton), Zak Butters (Port Adelaide)
                                • Who rivals are circling:
                                  Nil
                                • Retired:

                                GOLD COAST

Sam Flanders has struggled to find his best position this season and clubs like St Kilda believe he is gettable. Richmond and Sydney have shown interest in Malcolm Rosas who has fallen out of favour. Charlie Curnow likes the idea of life on the Gold Coast but the Suns won’t give up the house to get him.

                                GWS GIANTS

With more squad players going out the door in the shape of Leek Aleer, Jacob Wehr and Wade Derksen, the Giants will look to be aggressive with their defensive recruit. It was the part of their game that let them down the most, across the ground, so a focus will be on bringing in players that help defend the ball, and not just in the back line.

The Hawks have missed on Harley Reid and Oscar Allen, but are still expected to be busy this October.

Bolstering the midfield is the primary focus, with Hawthorn heavily linked to Essendon captain Zach Merrett, Port Adelaide’s Zak Butters and Melbourne’s Christian Petracca. They have cash to burn and a need for an A-grade onballer.

Who the Demons pick as their new senior coach will have a huge influence on the path they take in the trade period. If it is Nathan Buckley who assumes the role, they may be determined to keep Christian Petracca and at least one of their senior key defenders Steven May and Jake Lever. A key forward to support Jacob van Rooyen has to be a priority.

The Kangaroos clearly want to add some more experience to their list, particularly in defence and through the midfield. Melbourne free agent Charlie Spargo will join the club after 102 games at the Demons.

The Kangaroos have offered St Kilda’s Marcus Windhager a five-year deal, while also expressing interest in Melbourne defender Jake Lever, Carlton swingman Mitch McGovern, Richmond back Tylar Young and Gold Coast rebounder Connor Budarick.

The Power are linked to a number of players to help start the era of Josh Carr as senior coach but the big question is will Zak Butters seek a move to Victoria with a year on his contract? He has said he will honour his existing deal and be at Alberton next year but the speculation is constant.

                                RICHMOND

The Tigers look focused on the draft again this year as they aim to add some more young talent to their list, currently holding picks 2 and 3.

That said, Richmond and Sydney lead the race for Gold Coast forward Malcolm Rosas.

North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and West Coast have expressed interest in luring key defender Tylar Young out of Tigerland.

The Saints are on track for far and away the most aggressive off-season spend in AFL history. Liam Ryan and Leek Aleer have already requested trades, while Gold Coast gun Sam Flanders and Hawthorn’s Cam Mackenzie have also been linked strongly to Moorabbin. It means there might not be cap room to keep some established senior players.

The Swans have already been active with six delistings and potentially more to come. Charlie Curnow is the priority, but he is unlikely to be the only player they target as they open up list spots to prepare for both a bumper Academy draft and give themselves room to move with some proven reinforcements.

Anything from now on is a bonus for the Eagles after they secured star midfielder Harley Reid for a further two years. Brandon Starcevich appears the most likely target to land at the Eagles but the club is also chasing young midfielders. West Coast will play hardball with Liam Ryan but the Saints beckon.

An audacious play for St Kilda vice-captain Callum Wilkie shows exactly where the Bulldogs’ priorities lie in this trade period. Securing an experienced key defender is a must, and keep an eye out for a move for a young midfielder after they pursued Fremantle’s Neil Erasmus unsuccessfully. Tall utility Buku Khamis is likely to leave.
