Balta has had a night curfew for 3 months put on him as part of his sentencing. Means he can't play night footy.

AFL has been piss weak in this whole saga and should have put a ban on him when he was found guilty of assault. 4 weeks by Richmond was pathetic and not long enough.

Well the problem is that he tackled pinning both arms and had Higgin's hit his head on the turf and was concussed, Bramble would have copped weeks, so basically fined for the action which is probably the right call.

Surely if Smith does the bird again, just suspend him for 5 weeks and teach him a lesson

Smith is well suited to Geelong as he is just showing what a flog he is.

For mine he should have got five. Deliberate act and took one of the key play makers out of the game and misses the next one to two weeks, best case scenario.

Callum Mills one looks not too bad to me, but I bet he gets 3 weeks

The Pearce one looked pretty bad. What is his appeal based on? That he only had eyes for the ball? Even still it is a hard hit, don’t know he could of backed out but it was careless with high contact. Three weeks seems about right.

Wonder why Papley wasn’t fined or given a week for inciting a melee before the game started .
funny isn’t it. You can run at a guy and hit him but don’t dare do the bird.

AFL announces mid-season crackdown on umpire contact as stars on verge of potential bans

The AFL has told clubs it will crackdown on players who are repeat offenders for umpire contact with possible suspensions.

Players charged with a fourth or subsequent careless umpire contact charge within the past two seasons will likely be sent straight to the tribunal. Clubs will also be fined $5000 outside of the salary cap.

The league on Tuesday confirmed the mid-season change from Round 17 onwards following a rise in incidents in recent years.

There have been 63 charges laid for careless umpire contact so far in 2025 following 56 charges in total in 2024 and 20 in 2023.

In Round 16 three players were fined for careless contact with an umpire, while Brownlow Medal fancy Matt Rowell has been charged for the offence three times already in 2025.

Jack Macrae (four) and Adam Cerra (three) are also at risk of suspension, with players record to not be given a clean slate.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon wrote to clubs on Tuesday onto confirm the changes would be implemented immediately after previous warnings yielded no reduction in offences.

“We are seeing far too many instances of avoidable umpire contact, and since writing to clubs on this issue in February and again in April we have not seen a change in behaviour, and in fact seen an increase in umpire contact,” Dillon said in a statement.

“We have an obligation to provide the best working environment for everyone, including the umpires, and there have been too many instances of avoidable umpire contact.”

While repeat offenders for umpire contact will likely be sent straight to the tribunal, the AFL could seek an “alterative sanction for the offence, which may include an increased fine and/or where applicable, a suspension at the tribunal’s absolute discretion.
