    Re: North Melbourne

Forgotten, like Fitzroy, post 1989 it could easily have been Footscray forgotten. Sniffing 'round for their better players, like Essendon and Carlton did in 1989. Shipping them off to Tasmania, remember the Brisbane Bulldogs talk ? Another small club, small clubs used to stick together at VFL Board level. They've kept their name. They've won twice as many flags. If the crunch comes, I hope we are as supportive as C'wood was. They'll come good again.

Great points. The footy landscape has changed and after trying to get North to relocate to the Gold Coast and now to Tasmania I suspect the AFL is now comfortable that North has a spot in the competition from Arden street.
The problem for North is that they've gone from problem to problem for a number of years now and it will take a sustained period of success for them to get back into the mix of genuine relevancy.
They've got a strong and loyal membership base so it's on all the clubs and the competition to ensure they remain a viable club.

They have to start getting some wins on and off the field but the competition needs a viable North Melbourne.

Unlike Fitzroy, North have no debt and are only suffering on field. As for Saints, they still have a huge debt and maybe they should be the one talked about.

Great! They have 15 & 20 after pick 3 compo.

            We have 11 & 18-19.

I suspect the clubs, hopefully including ours, put pressure on. It seemed like 11 &/or Sanders, watered down to multiple pick 19-20’s. Good for them, and good for us this year.

The "can be reviewed" next year is important. How can a club be given assistance at the end of a future season? They might go alright next year.

Happy this shouldn't get in the way of us getting to pick 4 if we want it, but still hate the draft tampering. They're surely guaranteed pick 3 for Mackay even if he's offered a bag of chips.

Pretending that compo picks dont happen they are gifted picks 19, 19 & 20 in consecutive drafts, which is a total of about 2800 points.

What does the 2024 "Two end of first round picks in 2024 (can be reviewed next year)" mean? So they get rewarded for being continually sh!@$%t for another year?

That's how I read it and if there is improvement they lose it who knows with those AFL *'s though. They'll probably get more.

                          Re: North Melbourne

There are three parts to consider with the North Melbourne assistance:

                          1) When they were somewhat competitive by finishing around the 8 for an extended period North cut into the list and traded off good players so that they could get in more high end talent both via the draft and by signing players from other team and they failed miserably at it.

                          2) With what is an uneven fixture their perpetual poor performances creates a more uneven competition.

                          3) How much longer can the competition support an non competitive side?
The AFL can't move them to Tassie and nor do the Tassie supporters want them there.

They dug their own hole but it's not good for the competition.
Ideally they should be given 3 more players on their list and an extra development coach to help the younger players along but that's playing the long game and can the competition maintain a non competitive side for that long?

Wait until Tasmania and then the eventual 20th team enter the competition.

It'll be WRFL Div 1 standard.

I get all that. But clubs need to take responsibility for their poor decisions. If clubs know they'll always get bailed out for their poor decisions and that bail out could lead to a premiership (see Melbourne) then won't we just keep seeing this happen over and over and over? It'll never end.

You finish last you get the top pick. That's what the draft is there for. The afl should absolutely be concerned with equalising the fixture but they're too focused on the dollar to want to adjust that. The fixture is geared towards the big clubs and thats not healthy for a competitive league. If a team is perennially poor then I can see the justification for 1 end of first round pick but that's about it. The decision the afel had just made on compo to North is just going to lead to the next north in a few years.
