Change ditch diggers to street sweepers and it reminds me of a story in a Churchill biography I read recently.

Winston and his wife Clementine were out walking through London one evening. Clementine stopped and talked with a street sweeper for 10-15 minutes while Winston waited for her. When she'd finished chatting she caught up with Churchill who asked her who he was. "Well dear he was the man I was seeing just before I met and married you" "ahhh" said Churchill "so if you hadn't met me you may have married a street sweeper instead of the Prime Minister?" "No dear" said Clementine "if I'd married
him then he would have been Prime Minister and you would have been a street sweeper"

Both my grandfathers ran up the beach on 25/4/1915 and you didn't mention Churchill's name in either of their houses. My paternal grandfather was a socialist though. Mentioning Uncle Joe was permitted in his house.

Personally I'm a big fan of Georgy Zhukov.

Different times. Those blokes lost a lot including brothers and good mates at Gallipoli.

However I do admire Churchill for owning up to his error and going to fight at the Front himself after. I just couldn't see a modern day politician doing that.

All I intended to point out is that you're using the war as a defense of Churchill's character, his racism and white supremacy (he even admired Fascism as many in Britain and America did before WW2) where you wouldn't do the same for someone you're more used to seeing as a 'monster'.

Both were leaders that played important roles in defeating the Axis, both oversaw atrocities, both had substance abuse issues. I don't like Stalin either I'm just saying maybe Churchill aint that guy.

Get your point, I can't agree though.

May 1940, England are last man standing. Hitler who admired them wanted to broker a deal.

Any other prime minister may just have done that.

Without Churchill we might just be having sauerkraut with our cornflakes!

I mean at this point Stalin was on Hitler's side and was more than happy to divide up Poland and destroy a sovereign nation, then wipe out all of their best people (22000 of them) by rounding them up and murdering them in a forest. He signed the order.

(He only changed sides because he had to, and they only survived due to the Nazis being delayed)

Battle of Britain ensues, they hold off the Luftwaffe and that year it took for Barbarossa to happen was critical and kept a two front war as a concept the Germans had to be planning for.

Churchill is no saint, Stalin is just pure evil.

If you haven't read about collectivisation, holodomor and the great terror it's worth doing so.

Caught a bit of of North v Collingwood and North are making some progress in their long awaited rebuild. McKercher looks the goods and Sheezal was brilliant. Wardlaw is an excellent midfielder as well. I don't know that they will climb the ladder but they should be more competitive.

McKercher will be amazing Jasper. Norf are going to have an elite midfield.
