Re: Hawthorn racism review
I have to admit that I was somewhat surprised Hodge wasn't able to read the room here.
In many ways though his statement is representative of what can be the 'best' part of being at a footy club. Your mates at the club will have your back/support you even when you have done the wrong thing. We have seen countless examples of this over the years and I'm pretty sure Collingwood just rewarded one recalcitrant with a very large 5x year contracts and their coach joked about his misdeeds during his b+f speech...I mean, it's all fun and games when you are winning games of footy.
What everyone in the club bubble forgets though is there's a big wide world outside of the club, and not everyone in that world values winning the contested footy stats over and above 'everything else' that is happening...and quite literally everyone gets dragged into that bubble. If you think back (again with Collingwood) to the docco series a couple of years back, really only Brodie Grundy seemed able to separate life from football - certainly the coaches seemed unable too, Adam Treloar seemed unable too etc etc.
I understand 100% the criticism that Hodge is copping right now and it is 100% tone deaf - but all he has tried to do is say some positive things about his mates who are genuinely under fire for things he simply cannot relate too. What he should have said was he stands with his First Nations team-mates and whilst he will ALWAYS support (for example) Alistair Clarkson the person and will be in his debt for life, he cannot support the actions that have been reported by the ABC...that he only wishes he knew what was going on and wishes he had been the type of leader who better connected with ALL his team-mates...but he doesn't know how to do that.
Whereas the Clarko statement read as if he had paid someone to write it, Hodge's message was simply a 'I want to show support for my friend' letter that I would say he wrote independently...I for one can't crucify him for that.
