    Re: Hawthorn racism review

Genuine question, and please excuse my ignorance around this sensitive topic. Talk is that both Clarkson and Fagan will return to their respective clubs by November 1st.

My first question is, why did they initially step down? And what has changed since then to return to their clubs?

I guess the serious nature of the charges dictated the initial reaction to have both coaches stood down and who knows how the investigation is progressing but I would imagine both clubs are looking to get back to business and they might be prepared to deal with things at a later stage if it comes to that.

It's going to be fascinating to see how this plays out and from what we know there has been some appalling actions by the Hawks.

Get the broom out ladies and gentlemen, this is going to be nicely swept away.

Parties who have levelled racism allegations against Hawthorn are yet to confirm they will participate in the AFL's investigation into the matter.

However, there is still doubt over whether the parties that contributed to Hawthorn's cultural safety review will take part in the AFL's investigation.

"There are no guarantees," McLachlan told reporters on Thursday.

          ...............................

McLachlan said the pair will return to work "when the time is right" but no date has been set.

"We're anticipating they'll come back to work and they've actually respected the seriousness of these allegations by going on leave," McLachlan said.

"I actually think that they're to be commended and I think with the terms of reference being on foot, hopefully the process that follows actually gives some certainty for the accused and the complainants.

"I'm sure the clubs will be picking up the conversation about if there's an environment for them to come back to work.

"Ultimately it's a decision for the clubs."

I guess we don't know how this is progressing but the signs are certainly leaning towards the AFL allowing the clubs to make their own determination if the coaches are to return. I was listening to Todd Viney the other day who confirmed they were running decisions through Clarkson during the trade period. Should a club be doing that if the coach has been stood down?

yeah that Viney comment made me laugh too, I knew it would happen but to publicly say it was just too funny.

I was surprised he went public with it and contractually given his payout deal with Hawks he isn't supposed to be working at North until the 1/11. Clearly North don't feel the AFL is monitoring this in any serious way.

Chris Fagan turned up to Marvel Stadium during trade period. Brisbane staff also freely admitted they were talking to Fagan also.

Brisbane’s complete disregard of even the possibility that Fagan might have done something wrong has been pretty cooked.

                      Re: Hawthorn racism review

The AFL and Brisbane's most recent statements were bewildering. We now have a situation where the AFL is commending Clarkson and Fagan on how they've conducted themselves in response to the allegations.

For what? Standing down from work but not really stepping down?

You can understand why there is a level of mistrust and reluctance from the First Nation's families based on their experiences.

In the time period where aside from keeping in touch with some list management stuff they would largely have off anyway.

"Coach gets stood down when he would have been on holidays anyway and still keeps in touch with the club as much as he was planning too and will return for day one of pre-season like nothing happened" doesn't have quite the amount of gravity to it as the AFL is presenting it as.

This is a world where Luke Hodge is the leader of the Good Bloke Brigade. What do you expect?
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Just like that Fagan is back coaching. Brisbane released a statement that included this:

Speaking on Monday afternoon, Brisbane CEO Greg Swann said it was a joint decision between the coach and club that Fagan would return

A joint decision. Such a serious matter does not require a joint decision. It requires leadership. The coach needs to be stood down until the matter is fully investigated by an independent panel (an independent panel not determined by the AFL). Personally I believe all involved should not be able to return but that won’t happen.

As others have stated this will all be swept under the carpet. Shows just that the game is bigger than reality itself and matters of such serious concern are not matters that are dealt with appropriately.

I really hope not. It's a tough call to stand them down indefinitely so I get why the clubs are bringing them back. Ultimately it will be harder for the clubs later on if this escalates.
