I think what we all really want to know, isn’t why he’s away (as the most important), but at least for me when he’s back at the club training for 2025 and the upcoming media circus will stop being a distraction. That the club gives no rough idea on something as simple as when he’s back at the club really doesn’t give me much joy.

that is to say, if we were hoping he’d be back in a month, we’d say something to the effect but with caveats around it. We as a club don’t know when he’s going to be right to train with his team mates and play senior footy. That is clearly not good.

But at least we know he’s out indefinitely now. So there’s that.

I know it's a selfish thought and secondary to everything else thats going on with Marra, but this will hamper any trade value we might have even hoped for. He's probably going to have a down year at best meaning low value come trade time. And he's out of contract the year after which we really need to avoid.

          yes.

trade him 4 months ago and the offers would’ve been crazy. Think what Melbourne would’ve given up.

now we won’t get that, but will get better than him walking uncontracted. If trade week finished today, I’d say he goes to Sydney in a deal that also gives them points this year and us points next year for West (& Cooney maybe). Maybe a couple of firsts if we can wrangle it. If they trade Warner to WCE, then best case WCE first and one maybe of Hawks/Swans this year. Plus the points swaps across years.

Would be interesting if anyone at the top of the club thought about this at the time.

            Dogs used on Marra: Picks 29, 33, 41, 42, 52, 54 (but 61 back) and end of draft selections. So effectively (natural picks) 2 x 2nds, 3 x 3rds.
While I certainly understand the comparison, here are their goals (and games) tallies from their first four seasons.

            Hogan: 44 goals (20 games), 41 (21), 20 (10), 47 (20) - traded to Freo at the end of his fourth season

            JUH: 7 (5), 18 (17), 35 (23), 43 (21)

Obviously it doesn't tell the full story - Hogan is more accurate than Jamarra, he was the only focal point in the Demons forward line, JUH had development years affected by covid etc. But my point is Hogan had a lot more runs on the board than Jamarra at the same point in their careers.

More so the post is just a rough indicator of the devaluing down from Pick 1 that could occur. If anyone was thinking of a kings ransom like we could’ve got four months ago then the best and most recent precedent is that trade. There is some sting in this tail if it goes that way.

Your argument would be made by the club he wants to go to that he’s not worth 6 & 23.

Clearly we all know he has off field issues, who knows what they are, could be family problems, substance issues or a combination but the main thing I think we all want to know is has he decided to step away from training at the club or has it been the club/leadership group to tell him to take time away? I feel like the answer to that question is more telling then any rumours that are out and about.

I think we shall just have to be patient and trust the club. There is no point banging on about why. The issue(s) surrounding him seem to be related to him personally and are not about his relationship with the club. As such, they demand a clear demonstration of trust between him and the club. I am sure it is doing all it can to support him, arrange practical assistance, keep communication channels open.

Accordingly, the club is not in a position to provide commentary. Not to the media and not to us. The explanation as to what has happened and why will come at the appropriate time.

I think his form had already devalued him before any off-field issues, but I see your point.

Critter not sure I share your trust in the club. We have all seen this play out before and each time we have fluffed our lines.

I am conflicted with how I feel hearing and use to see JUH out and about with mates posting about it on social media like nothing is wrong. From what people are saying the company he keeps ain’t great.

Western Bulldogs face another challenge as Jamarra Ugle-Hagan deals with personal issues

There’s another delicate problem at hand for one of the Western Bulldogs’ biggest stars. It’s unfortunately a familiar tale for the club, writes JAY CLARK.

Once again, the Western Bulldogs find themselves managing a complicated situation.

About three months after the departure of Bailey Smith to Geelong after a difficult final 18 months at the kennel, the Dogs are supporting Jamarra Ugle-Hagan through some delicate personal issues.

The club’s position is clear: the brilliant forward first and foremost will be given as much support as he needs, as a person, to overcome his current challenges.

                            And they are multifaceted.

Ugle-Hagan is a proud Indigenous man who has been thrust into the AFL spotlight since he walked into the club with much to learn about the professional world of Australian rules.
And in 2023, he required time away from the club after he was subject to horrific racial abuse on the ground and online.

Who could forget his Nicky Winmar-style celebration and the talent of a man who booted five goals that night in an inspirational stand?

But his journey from a town of about 170 people in Victoria’s west to one of the competition’s most damaging key forwards has not been straightforward.

And to observers, it was clear on Brownlow Medal night that problems were at hand.

The Dogs have rallied behind Ugle-Hagan, desperately supporting him and providing help for the issues that have largely kept him off the training track now for months.

The gifted footballer is miles away from being ready for Round 1 in the kind of blow Luke Beveridge was desperate to avoid ahead of such a make-or-break season.

The Dogs have been the hardest team in the competition to read, ever since the magic carpet ride of the 2016 finals series. There was the premiership, the hangover, a list rejig on the run, and the frustrations that come with the Dogs’ wild form fluctuations.

At times in the second half of the 2024 season, they were the form side.

But then the elimination final loss to Hawthorn was over early.

Beveridge said to his troops they needed to fire early in 2025 after starting recent seasons with the handbrake on.

Ugle-Hagan’s teammates have been aware of the issues sidelining the forward, albeit for the occasional boxing session and off-site training, which isn’t going to cut the mustard when the whips are cracking at the top level.

The senior coach has set a hard line in the past in regards to player preparations.

Lachie Hunter was dropped from the 22 in 2022, and Caleb Daniel and Jackson Macrae both left the club at the end of the season after falling out of favour because the side needed more run and power.

Smith, who was out with a knee injury all of last year, had some off-field issues too before making it quite clear he no longer saw his future in the red, white and blue.

And now Ugle-Hagan is running out of time to be helping the Dogs at the time of the year when Beveridge said in a pre-season players’ address they needed to deliver. And with a contract extension still off-limits for Beveridge, the stakes are high across the board.

Sydney Swans had a massive crack at Ugle-Hagan and missed last year, and every club in the league will be looking on at this situation with intrigue.

On his day, the 22-year-old can play breathtaking footy; reeling in marks floating in from the side and picking up balls up off his bootlaces on bounding runs down the flank.

It’s a package that wins games and brings fans to the game.

But right now, the Dogs are trying to help the star goalkicker get things in line in his personal life, before he’s even a chance to return the field.

For Dogs fans, it will be another nervous wait for another of their star players, as football followers, once again, battle to get a good handle on what is happening at the kennel.

Had a friend just ask me does "flexible training arrangements" mean Marra is working from home?

Thought that was reasonably amusing amongst all the gloom.
