We don't want to be shafted but at the same time we need to know what they have and work a deal to satisfy us with what they have.
They trade a player to get another pick and bundle them up. SDK to Carlton would certainly land them a pick pretty close to what we want from Carlton. Carlton hold 12 and there has been some talk of them landing 9.

As much as the footy media circle jerk wants to downplay it - he's worth way more than a pick in the 20s.

Why is his manager saying he will get to them via the draft?

He should not be involved in that in any way.
The problem is Bailey's Manager unfortunately has to much pull with his stable of players. Clubs are aware especially the big clubs know they need to toe the line or players won't be direceted their way. This is why Connors knows Smith will get through to Geelong either way. It would be different if it was another Manager with a small stable of players.

Re: Welcome to the Bulldogs: Bailey Smith

I’m still quite optimistic about things.

          1. There’s a mixing of picks that buys Pick 9 from Essendon

          2. Our offer of Top 10 and their offer of 17 doesn’t get enough movement to get Essendon’s pick. The compromise is then two firsts to equal a top 10 pick at a push. They will want something back, and I guess that’s compromise.

So Pick 9 of two firsts (giving something back) is something worth dragging this out for.

Not so our club but clubs like Richmond/Hawthorn etc may heed his advise not to pick Bailey.

Perhaps Geelong should be trading with Essendon for pick 9

                As per my post yesterday:

                1. BS & F2 for 17 & F1

                2. F1 (WBD), F1 (GEE), Dogs 35 & Dogs 48 to Essendon for Pick 9 and a F2 (so we maintain draft rules)

                Why:

Essendon take our extra points and take Kako in the top 10. Then they hold THREE First Rounders next year. That’s a huge return for them.

Dogs hold 9, 17, 25 (CD?) and 27/47 (Jack, salary?) - But no first rounders next year

How does it compare to the GCS Trade:

Pick 6 - for - two mid firsts and a late first (gave back in points about a late first rounder - so a net of two firsts)

Pick 9 - for - two mid/late firsts, a second rounder and third rounder (giving back a mid or later second rounder) - but this could blow out to 12 with Ashcroft, Lombard & Kako. This is a net of two firsts and a third rounder.

So I think a trade like this is about right and equal/slightly better to the top dollar we paid GCS last year, despite the pick not being quite as good. So I think it’s pretty fair and plausible.

Turning BS into Pick 9 can be absolutely done. It will cost a lot. But if we trade back into the draft via CD & Jack, then we could have a top 10 pick, a later first rounder and two second rounders.

                  In regards going to the ND vs the PSD;

What’s to stop us doing a swap to get ahead of the cats, then drafting back BS?

I guess it's possible but I seem to recall there was some agreement with the PA that clubs wouldn't do that.

Bailey Smith would be allowed to nominate financial terms. Minimum contract length of two years.

That is probably correct but was something put in place where the contract couldn't be renegotiated from those nominated terms?
ie if you nominate 1M a season for 2 years then the club that selects you can't change that.

You can't renegotiate those 2 years but you can sign an extension for whatever

Not really in our best interest as far as draft capital goes

Well, you can even renegotiate the first or second year if the AFL believes there were changes to club's TPP that couldn't be reasonably forecast. Forget the actual wording. Remember it's the AFL that would be investigating.

I believe Cats would be bound to what is in the contract for year one but can easily imagine AFL letting them renegotiate second year due to changes to Cats TPP that were not reasonably predictable 12 months prior (ie we are signing Butters as a free agent which we did not forecast a year ago, we can fit him in but renegotiating a few deals).

I actually wouldn't be against us trying to get SDK as part of the deal but didn't he say he didn't want out of the Cats? Media reports anyway.
