Somethings got give though. The status quo isn’t working. Or reframe it to any player out of contact irrespective of service is a RFA. Thus would allow us to match the offer of BS. There has to be a better way. I don’t think the AFEL cares though.

That's pretty decent IMO. It might be accused of having a Vic bias but allowing clubs to trade a player within a state would be a middle ground that doesn't involve a 19 year old moving interstate twice in 2 years.

Then again... what would a club realistically pay if we had that ability and tried to trade BS last year? If he was determined to go to Geelong wouldn't it just be considered a waste?

Re: Welcome to the Bulldogs: Bailey Smith

Let me make it clear that I personally believe this system is a joke integrity wise, but that doesn't matter. Change will only occur if AFL cares enough.

The clubs most hurt by the player power in trades are the smaller Melbourne clubs, Suns and GWS. They are reliant on AFL's equalisation funding and the AFL has other ways to make you pay if you make too much noise.

We don't have the fanbase to generate enough outrage and media plays to that. The media is particularly negative with us, due to Bevo but we aren't really relevant to them. An easy target to attack as the vast majority of the audience don't go for us.

The AFL know what they are doing employing two of the biggest muck rackers in Cornes and Barrett. Obviously both of us have very little love for us. They will also shift focus if scrutiny gets real with the AFL and divert it to whatever narrative they spin.

Re: Welcome to the Bulldogs: Bailey Smith

The AFL won't change the rules to allow clubs to trade contracted players against their will unless clubs like West Coast, Collingwood, Geelong or Hawthorn push for it.

Dogs are purely in the competition to make up numbers so the media money keeps rolling in.

It is total bullshit, for the past week and the next week all we hear from the media is Smith is worth pick 121 so deal with it.

Then all we will hear after the trade is completed from our supporters is we got bent over and we should have done this, that and something else.

Frankly I am sick of the Smith clown show - Let's just trade him now and be done with it.

Yeh. its a mistake to let a player under 30 get to the final year of his contract. He did his knee in preseason. He was training with the group. He should have been signed prior to the trade period or we should assume if he doesn't sign he's out the door and sell him when we have currency. If he did it before last years trade period well then that's a bit trickier. Too late now. Have to deal with it but learn. He's a weird cat. He clearly loves the attention on the socials. can see him losing his mind with another serious injury so best its not us dealing with that fallout.

He can go call celeb woman "mommy" in some other trash colours

Re: Welcome to the Bulldogs: Bailey Smith

In hindsight, we should have traded him last year under contract but we no doubt tried to extend him and when that failed, obviously banked on him having a good year and extracting good value this year if he decided to leave.

His ACL injury completely ****ed any chance of us getting a really good deal and we can?t be blamed for that.

By that metric we should trade Bont, Darcy and Richards this trade period.

It's easy to say in hindsight we should have traded him. I understand there were some rumblings with him but there were with English as well and he re-signed.

We were thereabouts this season and in an alternate universe where Smith doesn't do his knee it's possible we were even better and he plays a finals series approaching his 2021 levels.

This trade them a year out talk is daft. If that's the case we should be cashing in Bont, Richards, Darcy, Vandermeer and Treloar now. Don't see many posters calling for that.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

                      Bont no.

Richards and Darcy they should be asking the question right now. Commited or not?

It's a very immature system we have.

Thing with the ‘trade them a year out’ strategy is the player has to agree to the trade.

Geelong know what they were doing and have probably been working on the trade for 18 months or so.

But it’s a system that works best for the AFL. AFLPA would demand higher TPP to give up trading rights and making the change would only help the clubs that are reliant on the AFL anyway.

Should have also traded Marra and English last year (was Naughton before or after trade period?)

Just prior to trade period last year so he was safe.

It's not traded - it's if you aren't committing then we will shop you around as we need to protect the club. Perfect business sense to me.
Or just let the players wipe their you know whats all over the joint and whinge why we don't have any hand.

It's not as easy as that - I get it, there's a cultural element in the AFL that makes it difficult. Regardless, the players have the whip hand and with recent choices of destination by Dunkley (Lions) and $mith (Cats) screwing the team we all care about I have no issue with the club putting the acid on the players now.
