When I responded to Ledge I was definitely thinking of making and winning Grand Finals. History shows success normally comes with an untried coach.
When everyone on WOOF was debating the merits of Bevo signing on again I certainly didn't fear looking at untried assistant coaches especially from well performed clubs
To me it really comes down to the actual strength of the playing list and the age profile etc to determine who might be the best options.
It's no good handing the list over to an experienced coach if there is a 4 year rebuild in front of them.
Hardwick appointment made sense for the Suns because they were ready, Yze was probably the right choice for Richmond who will need a few years before they challenge again.

Assessing the playing list and then looking for the best coach to oversee that is critical.

Buckley is interested in Melbourne, which should be interesting

        That's a shame.
I think he's the best special comments person that the gameday media have.

Agree he is very knowledgeable and rarely buys into the boyz club bullshit.

It kinda doesn’t make sense that coaches aren’t better the 2nd time around. What other job are you worse at when you’re more experienced?

Lots of unsuccessful first time coaches too. Flags are just hard to win.

I reckon Buckley will be a good coach 2nd time around. I hope the Dees don’t go near him.

It's funny you know. I coach at a different level and in the u18's the talent you have is the talent you are stuck with...but in my 2nd and 3rd years we played in Grand Finals. In my 14th year we went winless.

I know for a fact I was a lot better coach in my 14th year...but being 'better' doesn't necessarily always translate into success.

Premierships are time and place moments - it's the right coach for the right group of players. Sometimes it happens by accident, sometimes it's intentional...

I guess you would relate strongly to 2016 then. Seemed no logical reason for it, but everything just gelled at the right time.

I think we reference 2016 too often to be truthful...there is no doubt to me that 'something' happens to basically EVERY premiership team - be it the 2000 Bombers that nearly went undefeated to our 2016 squad that came from the clouds...there is a connection between players and coaches that just becomes impossible to break and they all pull together right to the end.

Government/politics - you are incentivised to constantly fail and get promoted until you land the top job and can't go any higher. Then you retire on $300k super a year for life.

It is that 'something' that really interests me. What is it? And how do you bottle it?

I think there might be an innovation difference.

A new coach is trying to stamp his brand with the accumulation of what he has learned from several different sources.

The experienced coach has his own success to draw on and may lack that innovation as he tries to replicate the old methods of success.

Someone is appointing him because of his prior success, so it would be more difficult to deviate a lot from that.

The newer coaches have probably developed strategies that counter the older methods

As an aside, Daniel Pratt could do a lot worse than to sack his current manager and appoint Adam Simpson - Simmo is spruiking harder for Pratt than he is for himself.
