Vardy has just missed far too much footy for mine, it would be like drafting Tom Williams all over again.

I like Stewart and think he has a lot to offer but not sure where he fits in with us. We get Crameri back next year and Boyd we hope takes a big steep forward next year as well. Boyd will be that 2nd ruck so where does Stewart fit in. Not against getting him but he isn't a priority for mine.

I do like Hanley. Had a nightmare run with injury last year and his form this year has been ordinary. Think a change of scenery for him would do him wonders. Could do with a player of his pace and kicking skills.

I really don't want to see Tom Boyd ruck much at all. When he does so our structures fall over, and the more time he can spend developing into the gun KPF he can become the better. If another ruckman helps that, than I'm open to this argument for one.

Its good to mix the forward line up a bit. When Boyd goes in the ruck at times we could go smaller up forward. I think its a big mistake in this era of capped interchange to have 3 players who can play in the ruck if they are not super agile or super good. We need the run and playing so many mids is a strength of ours.

Then I'd prefer to look at second forward/second ruck option for Redpath to compete with for a spot. If a Stewart, Vardy or Vickery type could get in spot in our team on form to ruck and rest forward and leave Boyd deep forward, that's a consideration. We still really don't know if Camhead, Redders & Boyd can play in one team yet.

I don't think we can play Boyd, Roughead & Campbell in the one side.

              Yes, absolutely.
Some players thrive and develop when given senior opportunity - Shane Biggs springs to mind, I dare say one of GWS' 427 tall or tallish forwards could as well (Josh Bruce has exploded at St Kilda after getting no opportunity with the Giants).

Vickery? Might as well get Peter Street back.

'Type'. Ie. Second ruck and tall forward type. And I'm all for getting Streeta back.

We have a need for speed and good foot skills. The kid we pick is going to stick about 250 goals onto Tom Boyd's chest so he has to be able to run from the contest and kick the ball.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Have you seen Caleb Daniel deliver the ball into the forward line by any chance?

Nathan Vardy could look at trade options as rival clubs make inquiries

GEELONG’S big man squeeze could force Nathan Vardy to seek a trade at season’s end as rivals circle the out-of-favour forward.

The 199cm ruck-forward turned down Essendon in last year’s trade period and has been frustrated by a lack of senior opportunities, playing only one senior game this season.

The Bombers wanted to snare Vardy, 25, from Geelong last year as an athletic co-pilot for spearhead Joe Daniher.

The Herald Sun understands Western Bulldogs, Greater Western Sydney and Brisbane have also made inquiries about the goal kicker.

The Gippsland product made a dazzling start to his career at Geelong, earning comparisons to Saints superstar Nick Riewoldt for his marking power.

But the mobile tall has resisted the Cats’ attempts to re-sign him so far this season and has fallen behind a string of recruits in the big man pecking order, led by Zac Smith, Rhys Stanley and Mitch Clark.

Vardy’s position may become clearer this week as coach Chris Scott considers recalling Clark for Friday night’s blockbuster against Sydney at Simonds Stadium.

But the prime marking target would be likely to consider offers elsewhere if he is unable to secure a senior berth over the remainder of the season, with the Cats pushing for an historic fourth premiership in 10 years.

ssendon and Brisbane may also enter the frame with preseason draft selections.

While Geelong has made it clear to the injury-prone ruck/forward he is a required player, the big man’s form has wavered this year.

He gathered six possessions in his only AFL appearance against Gold Coast in Round 6 and has booted four goals from nine VFL games. He has been named among the VFL Cats’ best players once in 2016.

Taken with pick No. 42 in the 2009 national draft, Vardy has played only 25 games in his seven seasons amid a shocking run of injuries, including a career-threatening hip problem and a knee reconstruction.

But he has made a full recovery this season and is confident of rediscovering the form that made him one of Geelong’s prized young players before hip and knee surgery threatened to cut his career down.

Scott said of Vardy in 2011: “The marking, I can see the similarities (to Riewoldt).”

“For a second-year player to be doing those things at AFL level is very exciting … Nathan’s really agile and a good runner.

“We’re trying not to get carried away, but it’s hard.”

Vardy was also set back by a foot flare-up in March this year which curtailed his pre-season.

Fringe Geelong midfielders George Horlin-Smith, 23, and Billie Smedts, 24, also face uncertain futures at the club.

Horlin-Smith is contracted for two more years, while Smedts’ deal expires at the end of next season.

Interesting to see what his market value is. As for the three clubs, he'd still be a fringe player at GWS and Brisbane is a basket case who won't win a lot of games for a long time. We'd be the most attractive club, but his injuries must surely drop his value down considerably.

Great ability, but just can't get a run at it .

I'm confused as to why we would be linked to a forward/ruck ?

We currently have difficulties fitting our biggest ever investment into the side in that exact role - why would we be after a similar player in Vardy?

Agreed. Unless we see him as more of a ruck man and we don't rate Campbell
