Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts
It's just nuts. If it works for him/Collingwood, then this will be the new normal. It's an argument to make minimum contracts 3 years for first rounders to give the drafting club a longer period to keep them to retain them, or have an option to trade them after 2 years under contract and get a slightly better return. I hope if Freo want him, they take him at 5.
The other question is, who told him to say this? His manager or Collingwood?Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

That's his 'Phantom Form Guide' right? (Ie just best players)
I watched his AFL.com.au video today and he said his 'Phantom Draft' (ie factoring in individual clubs wants/needs and factoring in where whispers he's heard from clubs) will be dropped on Wednesday.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts
I've again been looking at the players who could be around the mix and then the players that interest me as well.Pretty good so far G, you draft whisperer, you.

The article today with Naughton wanting Collingwood over Freo helps a midfielder drop down. So we have probably a short list of Fogarty, Clark & Coffield for Pick 9 as likely available.
Twomey today said we have interest in Murphy, Naish (FS, which Richmond will match), Higgins, Richards and Lachie Fogarty for pick 16 (if available).
At pick 9 I can still see us having Coffield, Richards plus a couple of others who could potentially slide being in the mix. Murphy could be the flyer at pick 9 but more likely at 16.
I'm surprised to see Twoomey has us linked with Naughton who's kicking concerns me but he could be right.
I can't see Richards sliding to 16 so if we want him then this might be the pick we need to use if we want a dashing defender. Coffield could slide but I wouldn't be confident he would get to 16. Could it be Cerra, Stephenson or Darcy Fogarty sliding or even us reaching just a bit for Higgins? Less that a week to go before we will know.
Pick 16 is a great spot for this draft. We could easily catch a big time slider or put in a bid on Naish. I suspect we want a small forward type so that makes the likes of Higgins and Lachlan Fogarty a chance but it could be Bonar as that hybrid mid forward or big midfielder as well.
I really like Jordan Houlahan and Nathan Murphy who would both provide us with some badly needed athleticism. I see them both as more natural defenders but they can play in a variety of positions. Houlahan is a bit of a reach at 16 but he can take a spectacular mark and is a nice accurate kick for goal. Murphy is coming from a long way back in terms of his footy but might be regarded as very good value at 16.
Could we even throw Charlie Ballard into the mix or could Jarrod Brander still be available as be the best big man at this pick?
Ballard is player that should appeal to our recruiting team. Pick 16 might be a bit high for him but he could be a top 20 player.
We've had a tendency (not written in stone) to draft in clusters of similar players in recent years so could it be Higgins at 9 and L.Fogarty at 16 as small forwards who can take a turn in the middle or do we need more athletic types like Coffield and Murphy or do we get hybrid types like D.Fogarty and Bonar?
Could it even be two Oakleigh boys in Richards and Higgins or Western Bulldog supporters in Coffield and Fogarty? Endless questions and options to consider and it should be a very exciting night for us.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts
Collingwood and Freo still shape the draft IMO.
It's such an open field but we'll have plenty of players available at both selections who fit well with our needs and are also quality prospects. I hope we steer clear of taking a tall and see appeal in speed and athleticism, along with players who can use the ball.
Houlahan/Murphy at 16 would be a great outcome and then it's a matter of who do we like more out of perhaps Coffield, Fogarty x 2, Higgins, Clark at 9 - I can't see Stephenson or Cerra falling through and Brayshaw appears well gone from our range, but if one of them slipped we'd surely pounce. I honestly haven't seen enough of Ed Richards compared to some of the other players so don't have him in my group, but happy to back your judgement that he is another in the mix for 9 or 16.Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?Comment

Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts
I agree that Freo at pick 5 and Collingwood at pick 6 will shape the first round and I'll throw in Stephenson and Cerra as potentially interchangeable selections. ie if a team misses one they would probably grab the other. West Coast might be one club that shapes the 2nd half of the first round.Collingwood and Freo still shape the draft IMO.

If it goes something like LDU, Dow, Rayer, Brayshaw then you would expect Fremantle or Collingwood would take Naughton with the next pick so lets assume it's Fremantle with Cerra and Collingwood and Naughton. The Saints are then licking their lips with Stephenson (or Cerra) at 7 and if they are smart Fogarty at 8.
If Collingwood ignores Naughton then it's Cerra, Stephenson and Fogarty in the mix which could potentially throw Naughton into the Saints calculations or even us or Carlton.
Unless someone slides like Cerra or Stephenson, and they shouldn't, then we have a bit of free air with our selection at 9. The players who are all being touted as early picks and supposedly the most talented are probably gone and we can either reach for a player that we've really had our eye on or go with a safe selection and just a few picks later we back it up again.
Pick 9 is a good spot for us, we could easily say we've grabbed a bargain which could be backed up by so many of the media phantom drafts or look like a visionary because we have selected someone a bit earlier than what the media believes. At pick 16 we will have a large number of more than suitable players both and could easily grab a bargain if a talented player slides.
I've looked at a number of scenarios and we do well regardless.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts
It's a good question and I think it depends on if clubs are saying he has to play a lot in the midfield. His endurance should improve but he should still be seen as primarily a mid sized forward who should push into the midfield. I think clubs would back themselves to improve his endurance but I don't think he becomes a full time midfielder easily.
6 clubs would have to pass on him to get to our pick and if we overlooked him Carlton would be more than happy to take him at 10.
So many questions on the more highly regarded players and there is reasons to have doubts on so many of them. That probably scares the shit out of some recruiters. There are some dings and dents with many of the more fancied players and for clubs it's working out what you are prepared to take a chance on and live with.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts
A quick look at some options for us, hopefully to spark some conversation.
Pick #9
The Safe Bets
Jack Higgins - A player who lives for to play football. A small forward who takes a turn in the midfield who is clever around the goals, great skills and a strong mark for his size.
Nick Coffield - A tall mobile defender who uses the ball effectively and is a good reader of the play.
The Potential Sliders
Aaron Naughton - The standout tall defender who is a great mark and reader of the play.
Darcy Fogarty - Touted as a potential #1 pick who struggled with injuries. He is a strong marking forward and midfielder with an aggressive style.
The Eye Catchers
Ed Richards - A very mobile mid sized defender who takes the game on and is a very good user of the footy. If teams are looking to go with smaller forward lines like Richmond then Richards becomes a good counter to that for teams.
Pick #16
The Safe Bets
Patrick Naish - Versatile small who is good around the goals and the midfield. Any bid is likely to be matched by Richmond
Nathan Murphy - Versatile and athletic he has come from a long way but is a genuine and safe option at pick 16.
The Potential Sliders
Jack Higgins and Ed Richards.
Oscar Allen - A 191cm 3rd tall forward with a strong athletic side but plenty of footy smarts.
Aiden Bonar - Powerful forward or midfielder.
The Eye Catchers
Jordan Houlahan - Athletic defender or forward who's marking is eye catching. Reliable kick for goal.
Lachlan Fogarty - Clever small forward and midfielder who kicks goals and has an outstanding defensive work ethic particularly with his tackling.
Charlie Ballard - Versatile rangy player capable of playing in multiple positions.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: WOOF Phantom Drafts
Thanks G. Hopefully Naughton is long gone by pick 9, as it looks like. As you say in Richards, if teams are looking to go small in their forward lines then we have more than enough tall defenders (Cordy, Adams, Roberts, Collins, Trengove, Morris plus Wood and with maybe Young if he stays down back).
At 9, I think the safe bet in perhaps Coffield. But if Bonar &/or Fogarty slipped down to 9, that opens up a really interesting debate. Dal seems to like his players showing a big upward curve, but both Bonar & Fogarty are not that type with their injuries. Or maybe that just means Dal gets a bargain.
At 16, I like Clark, who may be gone, but I like the big upwards curve or bolters available at 16 for Dal to pick. L. Fogarty & Murphy seem to climbing up phantom draft orders, month on month.
More than anything some pace and great foot skills are top of my wish list. A small forward, who is quick, who can kick goals and pile on pressure is something I've wanted for a while now.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
