As a sidenote, we got the Ward pick as a direct trade for Jordan MacMahon. What an amazing trade that ended up being, he retired in 2010, since then we've got 8 extra quality years of Ward then Macrae and heaps more to come.

We also got pick 50 for Sam Reid, from which we selected Jake Prudden.
There were only 5 players recruited under that arrangement by GWS. They were:

Phil Davis Adelaide One first-round draft pick.[27]
Callan Ward Western Bulldogs One first-round draft pick.[27]
Rhys Palmer Fremantle One end-of-first-round draft pick.[27]
Tom Scully Melbourne Two first-round draft picks.[27]
Sam Reid Western Bulldogs One third-round draft pick.[32]

Of that list, we utilised both picks, on Macrae and Prudden as per PPs post.

Adelaide used their pick to trade into the mini draft and select Brad Crouch. They also gave up pick 10 in 2011 to get Luke Brown as part of the trade. The pick ended up with Collingwood who used it to select Tim Broomhead in 2012.

Melbourne used one pick to select Toumpas, and traded the second back to GWS for the mini-draft to recruit Jesse Hogan. GWS used this pick to select Aidan Corr.

Fremantle's pick was on traded multiple times before landing with Carlton, who used it to select David Cunningham in 2015.

I'm glad we resisted the urge to on-trade these picks and landed an elite ballwinner instead.

We got Webb for Higgins. That's our only FA deal IIRC.

2012 - Haw got 70 for Young, traded to Sydney for Spangher
2013 - Coll got 11 for Thomas, swapped picks with WCE as part of complicated deal (WCE use pick on Sheed)
2013 - Haw got 19 for Franklin, traded for 2 lower picks; Hartung and Ceglar
2013 - Melb got 23 for Sylvia, traded to Adelaide for Vince (Adelaide used pick on M.Crouch
2013 - StK got 25 for Dal Santo, traded to Brisbane for Longer (Bris used pick on McStay)
2014 - Melb got 3 for Frawley, picked Brayshaw

2014 - Syd got a 2nd rounder for Malceski - forfeited due to COLA ban
2015 - Haw got end of 2nd for Suckling - used pick to upgrade to 19 (Burton), after complicated trades Bris ended up with the pick, chose Matheson

Do we consider letting Marcus Adams go (back to one of the WA clubs) in order to build up 'points'.

Its not as if he is embedded yet in our psyche yet and we do seem to have some developing young defenders.

If Freo miss out on McGovern. Adams could hold some appeal since they think they're in a window. Interesting.

He would need to finish of the year with no more injuries or his value will be severely compromised.

Not something i thought of but I'd be reluctant to let any more up stock up any more KPDs at Freo, they never seem to want to come back again. I know Adams is always injured but what a player the player he could be when he gets right terrifies me. It would be like waiting three years to open a Christmas present only to find out that your dad has given it to a kid down the street and bought you an orange instead.

Hopefully he comes out in the second half of the season and blitzes and puts all the talk to bed.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Freo have a number of tall defender so I don't think they will be interested in another although they might prefer Adams as a forward.

West Coast appear to be OK for defenders because they prefer good ball users over height but if they were to lose McGovern then things might change. We couldn't expect much in a trade perhaps clubs might part with a late 2nd round or more likely a 3rd round pick.

They're aren't chasing him are they? With Pearce, Hamling, Johnson, Logue, Dunman and Cox they seem to have it covered

Apparently up to $1,000,000 a year, the gossip is.

Seems they think they're moving towards a window and want flexibility to move big guys back and forward. I'm hoping Adams gets fit, tubs into a gun and never leaves. But as to the name Smads put up, it's probably the most valuable or valued player (possibly) in the thread if McGovern stayed or left. Not huge, but a name I hadn't considered.

Radio reported West Coast have offered McGovern $1m per season to stay, McGovern wants a longer contract. Years not dollars seems to be the issue.

If he gets it, as to Smads post, I wonder if Adams comes into Freo's thinking? Big guy, great hands, intercept marker, can pinch hit forward or better. We've traded in good spirit with Hamling and Crozier recently. Interesting name by Smads, might be a little something there later this year if things fall different ways.

With it looking almost certain now to have pick 5 as our first natural selection, any free agency compo for any of Roughy, Dahl, Libba &/or Wallis is (assuming we don't bring in free agents and reduce it):

                          At first round Pick 6
(Rhylee West going not far from here turns it into draft points moreso)
End of first round Pick 19 (948 DPs)
At second round Pick 24 (785 DPs)
End of second round Pick 37 (483 DPs)
At third round Pick 42 (395 DPs)

Subject to other clubs compo picks shuffling things around.

                          On top of our:

                          Pick 5
(Dead Zone Currently - 1 pick inside the Top 40)
                          Pick 41 (412 DPs)
                          Pick 59 (158 DPs)
                          Pick 60 (146 DPs)

Re: BT's very, very, very early 2018 post season / list management assessment

So now, here's my not as very, very early list management assessment.

                            1. The game against Richmond was a good selling point to potential recruits by trade and free agency. I.E. That's where we are headed next year, so join us and make us even better. If they watched the Carlton game it would be a harder sell, but the way we played yesterday with many good players missing gives us something to sell.

                            2. Our uncontracted players are: Jordan Roughead, Luke Dahl, Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberatore, Dale Morris, Lin Jong, Tory Dickson, Keiran Collins, Mitch Honeychurch, Tom Campbell - With Biggs, Smith & maybe Redders retiring

                            3. In order to secure West & Khamis this year in our own right, without going into draft points deficit, I'd allow Dahl to take this large contract from Geelong and Roughy to head to WCE or Saints. The compo will do that.

                            4. So gone to this point are Smith, Biggs, Redders (maybe), Dahl, Roughy - So say 4 or 5

                            5. Resigning Libba, Morris, Jong, Collins - Delisting HC & Campbell - Retiring Dickson (a hunch I have owing to injuries over 2 years) - Trading Roberts (can't crack a game and probably won't, so let's make a move)

                            6. So say 8 or 9, before the issue of Wallis gets addressed. I'm unsure what he will do, the media are making out good offers are coming in above what would be responsible. If so, then we have 9 or 10 spots opened.

                            7. Then we elevate Gowers & Lynch. So 7-8 spots opened. I'd delist NMM and Roarke off the rookie list. Time for fresh blood.

                            8. We have 7-8 spots opened up. Take pick 7, Rhylee West, Buku Khamis and a pick in the 20's from Wallis second round compo. That then leaves us with 3-4 spots still opened.

                            9. We have two later chance NGA players, a small high pressure forward and a hard ball winning midfielder in the mix. ESPN have rated them as late draft chances to rookie draft chances.

                            10. If it comes to pass we have salary cap space from Wallis, Dahl, Roughy, Clay Smith, Biggs, Redders, Dickson etc. - Then we are a hell of a threat to go poach players. We are going well re-signing Bonts without much of this, Dalrymple said last year we haven't spent the 'Hurley Money' and Tom Boyd was heavily front loaded so we aren't carrying the full extent of that.

                            11. The club says it will be aggressive/assertive in the player movement period. We have pick 7 and million/s in the salary cap. The mind boggles as to what we could do. Shiel, Kelly, Gaff (WCE threaten to match the offer) or another gun or two player by trade.

                            12. It wouldn't be ideal to lose Wally, Dahl & Roughy. But I can see the symmetry in what Hawthorn did when Mitchell & Lewis went and they went and O'Meara, Mitchell etc. It will be sour for sure, but if they leave for better contracts elsewhere that's good for them. That's also giving us a war chest and a chance to accelerate back into finals.

                            13. So roughly speaking:

                            Pick 7/gun trade - Dahl
                            West - Wallis
                            Khamis - Roughy
                            Pick 20's - Biggs
                            Pick 63 - Smith
                            Pick 64 - Campbell
Pick 82 or NGA - Dickson
Pick 100, NGA or Free Agent - HC
                            Gowers/101 - Redders
                            Lynch/Pick 102 - Roberts

                            14. Leaving aside clubs looking to trade for any of our players.

Very good post, BT. No mention of Honeychurch? He’s a solid trier, but just not up to it, imo.
