If we trade for an established gun player, also having two 'starting 18' All Australian kids is a great talent injection to the list. That's a lot of talent added into the list.

I reckon we can get Khamis late - just a hunch.

Be very surprised to see Gowers agreeing to that.
If it does go through expect the AFL to tweak the rules in the next year

I can't think of how this would work TBH. I stand to be corrected but I'm fairly certain you can only rookie a player front year to year and every rookie is free to nominate for the draft if they are not elevated.

We'd essentially have to convince Gowers in two off seasons in a row to remain a rookie.

As he is a first year rookie we can keep him on the rookie list for two more years and a portion of his contract is therefore not counted under the cap (I don't know the exact portion). The suggestion is Gowers is comfortable with this as long as he gets a multiple year contract and he is the only player eligible for this to apply to.

In this circumstance I'd happily offer him three years and weight it towards the first two years where the rookie-cap discount applies. Sounds like a smart strategy if Gowers is comfortable with it. Under the rookie list changes, at least one rookie can play from round 1 with no LTI listed player required.
            According to the rules:

10.9 Retention of Rookie List Players
            (a) A Club may retain a Player on its Rookie List for a second season provided it
nominates such Player or Players using Form 32, prior to advising the AFL of its
Primary List under Rule 6.1(a) and such Player consents to being nominated on
the Rookie List for a second season.

            (b) A Club may retain a Player on its Rookie List for a third season provided it
nominates such Player or Players using Form 32 prior to advising the AFL of its
Primary List under Rule 6.1(a) and such Player consents to being nominated on
the Rookie List for a third season. If a Player is retained under this Rule 10.9,
any amount he is paid in excess of the 1st year third round draft selection Player
payment will be included in the Club’s Total Player Payments.
So in the third year any amount above the 1st year third round draft selection Player payment will be included in the cap, but next year is a free kick to front load his contract and get it all under the cap? Not that we should be talking big dollars, but every bit helps.

Re: BT's very, very, very early 2018 post season / list management assessment

So I've had some thoughts with the publicly available info, and how we could jump right in.

Adelaide are rumoured to be into our player Young. Adelaide are trying to get as far up the order as possible to get the elite SA talent. McGovern requested a trade last night. So...

We make a play for McGovern, a 1.5 goal a game medium forward is ideal for us. Offering Adelaide a swap of pick 6 for pick 14 (before compo moves), pick 42 and Young to them, their pick 37 to us.

              Dogs: McGovern, picks 14 & 37
Crows: Picks 6 & 42, and Young - Then Adealide take picks 6 & 7 to Carlton or GCS and see what they can do about getting pick 1 or 2. Adelaide get a player they may want and jump from late first round, and into back to back picks in the top 10 ready for them to make a deal to package them to go further up the top 10. It seems to me to be a plausible argument.

Then the dogs take pick 14 & 37 to WCE for Gaff, assuming WCE threaten to match the offer if the FA compo would be pick 18 or 19 or worse. That puts the offer just short of the trade Geelong & Adelaide did on Dangerfield (9, 28 & Gore for Danger & 50) in lieu of a free agency arrangement, which is about right in value to both clubs, Gaff is good but he's not Dangerfield. Their talk on English is an ambit claim. We also encourage Roughy to take up a free agency offer from WCE as good will for both him and WCE. So WCE get a fair bit more than the FA compo, so this is pretty tempting to get them back into the first round and another in the 30's. So I see it as at least possible too.

So we turn picks 6 & 42 into McGovern & Gaff. We use the likely Dahlhaus compo pick circa 20-25 to buy a first rounder still, in Rhylee West, we use likely Roughy compo around 43 (before shuffling) and 59 & 60 as cover for Buku Khamis whose a second or third rounder All Australian kid.

Unless we think we are getting a dead set gun, at pick 7 or possibly lower with Thomas & Blakey once matched, perhaps we can get creative about using it be it for above, or with other clubs in a similar manner.

                Few issues with that BT.

Is McGovern any better a player than Gowers? Takes a decent mark per match, but very little else and can't for the life of me see how we use our 1st round pick (even as a swap) to acquire him... A big no thanks. And I'm keen to further develop Young, still very raw, but has some very good traits.

Your point about getting pick 20-25 to acquire a first rounder (in West) isn't factual if he's selected in the 2nd round... which looks likely.

The Young thing keeps getting repeated on here but as far as I can tell it came from 1 poster who provided no source. I've never seen it mentioned anywhere else so until there is some sort of corroboration of this rumour can we please stop presenting it as fact?

Some fair points. To jump straight to the conclusion, my last few words above were probably the most important about using the same strategy in a similar manner with other clubs (and players). In reading the different views on the board and listening as much as possible, the consensus seems to be only two options, use pick 6 or trade it outright. But perhaps in say a Gaff scenario, WCE would threaten to match an offer, but say they take a later first rounder and a later pick (like Dangerfield but less), then there's an opportunity to look to trade down in the first round as a third option to get Gaff adding an extra pick. Maybe North or Sydney would like 6 to get in before Blakey & Thomas bids, and maybe they've got something we want. I guess the main thought is whether we are dropping down the order enough that we think we can use pick 6-7 to try to move a few pieces around to get some good players.

Axe Man, I'm not saying anything that Young is leaving. I used the word 'rumoured', so there's no fact presentation from me at least.

Young isn't even 20 years old yet and is eligible for a rising star and has shown he can play.

Unless he really really wants to leave, No way known we should even contemplate getting rid of him.

He's contracted. So he's not going anywhere unless the club gets too good an offer to refuse.

Sorry I probably worded it incorrectly. I mean it shouldn't even be presented as a rumour until there is something more to back it up than a single unsubstantiated post.

Otherwise I can just start a rumour that Gold Coast are interested in trading Steven May, Jack Martin, Peter Wright and an annual pass to Movie World for Honeychurch, Roarke Smith, Jong and meal for 2 at the Plough Hotel.
