    Re: 2019 Mid Season Draft

    Richmond have taken Pickett.

He has just re-broken his finger and is out for 10-weeks (according to the papers over here).

I don't get it...unless they are picking him now so they have dibs on him for next year? If so, I'm not really sure that's really what this draft was intended to be used for. Then again, we are down a ruckman/key forward and a mid-sized forward and have drafted a key back...

I am very confused as to why we are doing this again? Just seems like another way to get on the back page of the paper/generate talk radio traffic.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Richmond said they picked him for the long term.

Lowson not picked, weird, he was talked up heaps
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

This is a great question. I don't know either. I imagine the contract is until the end of the year.
          And then.........????

I'm no expert so I will bow to those in the know.
But I think I read that they are delisted free agents after 6 months if they don't get an extension.
            I could be wrong.

Gardner has placed both ends. Kicked 6 goals as a key forward for Geelong's VFL team. Sam Power also said he is a player that can play forward or back.

Yep - and he'll be 28 at the start of next year. It was a head-scratcher.

David King questioned the Richmond recruiter (forgot his name) and said, is he really out for 10 weeks with a broken finger? Maybe they think he will play this year.

And that's fine - Marlion is a genuinely good player and will have an impact, but why get Grigg to retire to draft someone who can't play...

All I am trying to say is that this draft has just been used so the Tiges can get a jump on the 2020 season - and that isn't really what it is for. For us - same. It was created to enable sides to cover for injury/retirements...we haven't exactly done that...

I guess list management is list management, but if the state leagues were annoyed before I reckon they will be REALLY annoyed now.

I don't like the mid season draft at all and yes you are right it was designed to top up a list to cover long term injuries/retirements, however, that it what the normal rookie list was designed for.

Bookmark it, next will be mid season trading.

Gardner does cover injuries for mine.
We're desperate for talls and he has the ability to play a role this year, given we're one injury away from disaster and he would be familiar with our system from his time at Footscray.

I believe we've drafted him with the view that we will look at him for the balance of this year and next.
I think we rate his mobility as a defender but he could be moved forward as well.

I heard they get $50,000 if picked and $20,000 severance pay if they aren’t kept on the list.
I guess thats added to the salary cap, not sure about the severance pay though.
So you would have to have at least 50,000 free for each pick.
