Sydney, Carlton & Gold Coast have 'shown interest' in Kyle. All picks are ahead of ours.

If we were super keen, and Kyle wanted to join us, would he have been better off going into the end of year National draft?
Yep, either with the last pick in the ND (Will Hayes). Or, then the last pick we had in the rookie draft (circa pick 40) and left Khamis as a Cat B (then elevating Khamis into the inevitable spot from Picko here). Or ask Picko to retire one week or so earlier (by March 19th I think was the cut off) and replace his spot with Kyle directly who had trained with Footscray.
That's a lot of chances we had to grab him but didn't.

Not necessarily. It depends where everyone rates him. And we have no right to him at the ND, Sydney do.

I think it's fair to say we're not super keen then.
Given where Sydney are, expending a pick mid season on Dunkley as opposed to a mature guy who could impact right away is more likely.

That's my assumption too. But I guess we all wait and see in a couple of weeks time.

Leading player agent Liam Pickering says state-league prospects Kyle Dunkley and Michael Knoll could land at AFL clubs through the mid-season draft.
Dunkley, 19, the younger brother of Western Bulldogs premiership player Josh, went undrafted last year.
Dunkley booted three goals for Footscray last weekend.
South Adelaide ruckman Knoll, 26, has attracted interest from several clubs, including Essendon, according to the Adelaide Advertiser.
But Pickering expects AFL clubs to poach younger prospects, as opposed to mature-aged players ready to impact this season, with a view of developing them for next year and beyond.
"It was designed originally for exactly that reason… lost a ruckman (go get a ruckman)," Pickering said.
"I don't think you'll see a lot of that in the mid season draft.
"(Clubs thinking) we'll take the best young one available, give him a six-month window into our club… to get the jump on next year."
It is the chance for clubs to strike gold and top up their list for a premiership assault. Or, for a struggling group to take a chance on the next Tim Kelly or Kane Lambert.
The question is — how will your club attack the AFL’s mid-season draft?

WESTERN BULLDOGS
The retirement of Liam Picken opens up a list spot for the Dogs. He is the only player out injured for longer than six weeks, with Dale Morris trying to get back after the bye.
WHAT THEY’VE LOST: You can’t replace Liam Picken, and the Dogs have unearthed plenty of young talent of late in Ed Richards, Bailey Smith, Tim English and more. But every club needs more elite talent and the Dogs could do with more key position cover given Josh Schache is battling away in the VFL.
WHAT THEY NEED: The Dogs likely need more intercepting key defenders given Easton Wood is 29 and Dale Morris 36. Aaron Naughton was recruited as a key defender but pushed forward so the Dogs might consider a key defender.
WHO THEY TARGET: The Dogs have mined the VFL plenty of times before, but most of the players undergoing medicals from the VFL are midfielders or small forwards. Aaron Black and Sam McLarty have been on AFL lists and are playing VFL but aren’t at the head of the queue in the mid-season draft. Ryan Gardner has kicked eight goals from four games in the VFL for the Dogs’ side this year, so maybe they grab another one from their own affiliate?

Let's get some more half back flankers

It is at this point that I think the stupidity of making Bhuku Khamis a cat a rookie is apparent.
He is still raw as hell, a long way off a debut, and not a player in a position of need should we want to use him. Perfect for cat b.
Meanwhile we could have used that cat a spot last year to pick up someone in the mix for us, say a Kye Dunkley, give them an opportunity and secure a talent for our list. Or alternatively we could have left it vacant, waited until this midseason draft and picked someone in form at VFL level and who helps us out in an area of need.

The whole thing irritated me at the time because the other clubs surprisingly gave us a free hit and then we threw it away.
We have done so well in the past taking a punt on rookie picks that it baffles me why we wouldn’t leave Khamis as a CatB and pop an extra on the list. At worst it is an extra recruit for Footscray, which can’t be a bad thing.
Sydney have apparently made inquiries as to their ability to have priority father-son access to Dunkley (they can't), so I wouldn't expect him to last past their pick.
