    Re: 2019 Mid Season Draft

Top mid-season prospects set for medicals ahead of May 27 draft

Have you heard the one about the Irishman who’s intent on fighting his way back on to an AFL list?

No joke, former St Kilda Category B rookie Ray Connellan has emerged as a candidate for the mid-season AFL draft.

Let go by the Saints after two years in which he played 34 matches for Sandringham in the VFL, speedster Connellan signed with the Essendon VFL team this year.

He played the first two games of the season but has since missed with a hamstring injury.

    He’s expected back next week.

However the speedy Irishman is attracting some interest ahead of the mid-season draft.

Connellan is on a list of 22 players who will receive medical screening overseen by the AFL before the draft on Monday, May 27.

Four other VFL players will do the same: dynamic Coburg small forward Sam Lowson and utility Lochie Dickson, Williamstown’s former Kangaroo Mitch Hibberd, and Northern Blues recruit Frank Anderson.

Lowson’s form has been one of the VFL’s talking points early this season and Burgers officials are convinced he’ll be taken early.

Dickson (Norwood) and Anderson (South Croydon) are both senior premiership players from the Eastern Football League, and Hibberd has been a standout for the Towners as a midfielder, wingman and half forward.

Dandenong Stingrays 19-year-old player Mitch Riordan, co-captain of the club’s first premiership last season, is also on the list and it’s believed he’s fielding interest from an interstate club.

    PLAYERS WHO WILL UNDERGO MEDICALS
Ajang Ajang (East Perth), Frank Anderson (Northern Blues), Daly Andrews (Western Jets), Ray Connellan (Essendon VFL), Josh Deluca (Subiaco), Lochie Dickson (Coburg), Kyle Dunkley (Gippsland), Oliver Eastland (Claremont), Cory Gregson (Glenelg), Brady Grey (West Coast WAFL), Mitch Hibberd (Williamstown), Cody Hirst (Eastern Ranges), Lachlan Hosie (Glenelg), Sam Lowson (Coburg), Jack Mayo (Subiaco), Declan Mountford (Claremont), John Noble (West Adelaide), Matt Nunn (Norwood), Marlion Pickett (South Fremantle), Jarvis Pina (Peel Thunder), Mitch Riordan (Dandenong), Adam Tipungwuti (NT Thunder)

That would suggest to me that no other team is interested in Rueben William since nobody has requested a medical.

Frank Anderson is a great name for a footballer. And Ajang Ajang is a great name for anything.

        Lets pick them!
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

SEVEN RUCK CONTENDERS IN THE MID-SEASON ROOKIE DRAFT

          Ajang Ajang – East Perth
          22yo, 198cm, 96kg

Just eight games into his WAFL career, the Sudanese big man is already turning heads. Was called upon for last year's elimination final with instant success, collecting 28 hitouts, 13 disposals, two goals. Has now become one of the WAFL's most athletic ruckmen with hitouts to advantage numbers through the roof. One of only two ruckmen set to undergo a medical assessment ahead of the Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

          Jack Blair – North Adelaide
          24yo, 206cm, 108kg

Trained with Sydney ahead of last year's drafts before heading to North Adelaide to further his football resume. Started the season in the SANFL league side but was last week dropped to the reserves. A rugby convert, Blair only played his first season of football last year, winning a Premier Division flag for UNSW-Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs in the AFL Sydney competition. Pushed into football by premiership ruckman Mike Pyke.

          Oliver Eastland – Claremont
          21yo, 198cm, 87kg

What Eastland lacks in height, he makes up with his athleticism. Burst onto the scene late last year in the ruck for Claremont, ironically holding his own against Zac Clarke when he was at Subiaco. Received attention in November and was invited to the WA State Draft combine. One of only two ruckmen among the list of 22 players invited for a medical screening ahead of the Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

          Michael Knoll – South Adelaide
          26yo, 204cm, 103kg

Will be the SANFL's lone ruckman in Sunday's State clash against the WAFL at Optus Stadium. Playing just his third year of football after a College basketball stint, Knoll crossed from Box Hill last year where he was emergency for the VFL Grand Final behind Marc Pittonet. Landed at South Adelaide this year after the Panthers lost Hayden McLean and Keegan Brooksby via the SSP. Could he be the third in 12 months?

          Edyn Sibbald – Essendon VFL
          23yo, 200cm, 90kg

Could be one from left-field. Stuck behind Draper and Clarke in Essendon's VFL program, the St Bernard's prospect has now been presented an opening as No.1 ruck. Debuted last year and has athletic traits, however it would be a big ask for him to lead the AFL ruck division. With Clarke on a one-year deal and Draper's injury expected to keep him sidelined for parts of 2020, the Bombers could roll the dice.

          Luke Strnadica – East Fremantle
          21yo, 203cm, 100kg

Cut by Fremantle at the end of last season, the 21-year-old has returned home to his original WAFL club and been one of the shining lights in a disappointing start to the season. Averaging 32 hitouts from his opening five matches, the former WA Under 18 representative and AFL Academy member simply found himself caught in the Dockers' logjam of talls last season.

          Adam Swierzbiolek – Coburg
          24yo, 200cm, 107kg

Soccer convert who presents as the ultimate mid-season smokey. Only playing local football 12 months ago, the 24-year-old has now taken the mantle at Coburg as the No.1 ruck. Still plenty of upside in his development, Swierzbiolek's physicality has allowed him to go head-to-head with AFL-listed ruckmen. Averaging 19 hitouts and 10 disposals a game.

I'd go with "Rochelle Rochelle" personally.

If I've said anything that could be construed as culturally insensitive by mistake can a mod with that level access please delete.

I clearly am not made for these times. It was a shitty reference to 80's Aussie band Ganggajang.
Please remove. I am obviously an ignoramus because I'm not sure what offense this could be. Could someone please PM me and clue me in. I would like to understand what I'm clearly missing so I make sure to be more sensitive in future.
Apologies again to anyone for whom my dumb pun may have offended.
I'll own it and I'll do better.

I always like the way Cory Gregson played. A nippy forward. Unfortunately for him he had a lot of injuries at Geelong.

Gangajang is just a slang word for cannabis. It's also the name of the band that wrote and played our unofficial national anthem Sounds of Then (Out on the patio we'd sit, And the humidity we'd breathe We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia
.). Its an OK cultural reference (Plus I'm not going to let the Dutton's of the world stop me using my favorite words-that way he wins)

This is one of the kids I work with , extremely skinny in the legs, very tall and athletic, was turfed from northern blues early as he was very lazy I heard.
Great kid, seems to have matured a lot since then.

Good luck to Sammy as we know him.

Not interested in Gardner. I think Dunkley’s brother may give us a player that can kick goals

                          To do what though?

We already have accumulators with questionable hurt factor by foot (Macrae, Dunkley, Hunter) and the ones we have are better.
I'd prefer we look at role players who can strengthen an area we need help in e.g. Gardner for a tall swingman or a smart small/mid forward who can tackle.

I think we should be looking at young Dunks. If he is half the player his brother is then you have a solid citizen.

Dunkley ticks all the boxes of the sort of player clubs should be using this opportunity for as well. Might also speed up his brother getting pen to paper.

I thought I'd read a few clubs, Sydney being the main one, are keen on him and have picks ahead of us. I'm pretty sure I'd read the Swans were disappointed they coyld not invoke Father Son rules to get Dunkley this mid season draft.
