 Re: 2021 draft watch

It's definitely possible but even so, if he gets overlooked again and we can pick him up for free, I still think he's worth putting on as a Cat B for a season to see how he develops.

In that mid size defender role, Wood has one year left, Crozier is almost 28 and Khamis is still miles from establishing himself as a long term AFL player. Can't hurt having a freebie sitting there as depth, may uncover a diamond. Low risk, potentially some reward. Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.Comment

Or maybe he’s a kid. A kid who lost his entire draft year and that development to a pandemic and then the smallest draft. A tall kid learning his craft. Who was still invited to train over summer. Who performed very well in the NAB League & Young Guns representative game. Who we still invited to Footscray and played in the VFL. Who draft watches had top 20 for the MSD (ESPN) or Full Back of the year (Cal Twomey).Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

He is obviously lacking something that is stopping clubs from pulling the trigger, but he's shown enough to get a crack as a Cat B at the very least. 192cm kids who read the ball well in the air and use it nicely don't exactly grow on trees.Or maybe he’s a kid. Re: 2021 draft watch

I agree with point. But he was overlooked last year after missing an entire year of playing and development. As we’re about 600 kids. He still made the final fight for our final list spot and lost to Scott who has played every game when fit. He didn’t make the MSD cut. A developing kid who missed am entire year, and has played the grand total of two games against men. I can see why clubs might have been hesitant to invest the cash, especially when clubs have cash issues. I wouldn’t agree to the other post above that lacks context. I finish as I start, i agree, if we got him cheap that’s a good outcome.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

The MSD was skewed heavily towards developing rucks and mature state league players. There were very few 19 year old non rucks taken.I agree with point. Re: 2021 draft watch

Exactly. All we know about Cody Raak is this:

Last measured, he was 192cm and 82kg and is likely got a bit of growing and filling out this year
He impressed as an underage KPD/KPF swingman (better defender)
He missed his entire draft year for playing and development
He missed the tiny draft last year (with 900 others)
We passed Cat B, presumably on salary
When Lloyd quit footy, we then got him back into the club to train for this list spot (we like something about him)
He lost that fight to Anthony Scott, whose played every game when fit
Despite missing, we brought him into Footscray and have played him twice (we like something here)
He has impressed in the NAB League and the rep game
He nominated (with hundreds of others) for the MSD where players like him weren’t picked
ESPN had him top 20 for the MSD, AFL.com top 27, The Roar Pick 18
Cal Twomey has still got him as Full Back in his team of the year

Now he will likely get drafted. Be it elsewhere or to us most likely for free as a very late pick or Cat B. Power can play the same game he did with Khamis where he ‘passes’ and keeps passing until he has the last pick in the draft to either match a late bid or ensure Raak goes Cat B and draft another player. Dream scenario.

But comments (not by you Comrade) about a 19yo kid with two games against men with an obvious amount of talent being ‘vanilla’, ‘average’ or ‘isn’t that good’ deserves to be challenged with the counter argument.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

We wouldn't have played him at Footscray if we didn't like something about him. We've passed on other NGA players before and haven't featured any of them at VFL level.Exactly. All we know about Cody Raak is this:

 Re: 2021 draft watch

Bank on my fellow Comrade. My guess is money was part, a big part of the decision to pass/wait. But if we recruit Raak last year and let him get flogged as he tries to make up that lost year of development and he becomes our next Stevie Tiller. Drafted before he was ready, even though he had the talent, but then burns out. This way (if it happens) he gets feedback from the club in real time over summer to develop him towards making a call later this year. Interestingly, coming out of summer training with our coaches, including the intensive coaching from Morris & Varcoe; in his first game, Round 1, he amassed 31 disposals, 9 marks and 11 rebound 50s.

Where he ends up, or how it does or doesn’t happen for him, he deserves the chance to impress us before writing him off. I, like you, are very much interested in how the next few months go for him.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
